On the way home yesterday a helpful motorist alerted me to the fact that, "You can bike at the gym!" Perhaps he was excited that his gym now has a stationary bike. If I had been quick to reply, I think it would have been best to tell him, "The McRib is back!"

mgw4jc the sky here in the TRIAD looked just as awesome. Almost took a picture but didn't.

Mostly cloudy (medium overcast) this morning with patches of very bright light. Just two days of this and I've forgotten what sunlight looks like! Light showers late last evening left the air a bit cooler for this morning. The cooler than usual temperature inspired me to push and ride a bit faster than usual, which left me sweating when I got to work. As usual..

yesterday was a pleasant ride home minus my new bike shifting or clunking or something weird in the drivetrain. Coming in and going home it randomly clunks when I push hard. I am taking it back to the shop tomorrow for them to sort it out. I am not sure if it is because he rebuilt my wheel and something is settling in. Honestly, I am pretty concerned that I bought a lemon or this Salsa has some issues that are not inspiring much confidence. Riding home it was about 75F and less humid and actually pleasant. I came across this guy on the way home. I am not sure copperhead or corn I could not tell so I stayed away to be safe.

Too chilly this morning to be sweating as much as I was when I got to work. I guess it's that time of year again.
|
A most unlikely thing happened. I had a tailwind in the morning, a tailwind in the evening, and a tailwind again this morning. I'm betting I'll have a headwind this evening. I notice I'm faster than most people when I have a tailwind. I think people take their usual speeds without taking advantage of the winds.
There is a chance of rain this afternoon and evening, so I have lots of spare clothes with me. I have a dress rehearsal for the Mile Long Opera this evening outside. Hmm, this could be interesting. |
This morning's commute was a nice uneventful ride. I have not been able to ride as much as I would like to in recent weeks due to family circumstances beyond my control and some rainy days.
|
Decent ride this morning. Cool mornings so far this week have been nice. It seems more dog walkers and runners are out on the MUP too. I mostly just approach slowly and let my clicking free wheel alert them to my presence. I'll say something if I have to, but they usually hear the clicks.

I usually leave the house at 4:45 AM, leave my bike in a bike locker at the train station, and catch a 5:13 AM peak hour train. The roads are dark, there is very little traffic, and the train is usually pretty empty.
But today I need to bring a bike with me on the train, so I have to wait until peak travel hours are over. Left the house plenty early (I thought!) and got caught in logjam traffic. Two close calls with impatient drivers, more traffic, and I got to the station just in time to see the tail lights off my train disappearing in the distance. Doh! Well, there will be another train. Judging from the number of people waiting on the platform, the non-peak train will be a lot more crowded than my usual one. |
Really foggy this morning. The temp was a reasonable 59F.
Got up an hour and a half early and rode to the monthly bike commuter breakfast that one of our local cycling groups arranges. It's always fun getting together, and it is nice afterwards to be able to put a name to a face when I wave to fellow commuters out on the road. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3221ff4965.jpg |

Wet from yesterday and last night's rains and wet leaf season is in full bloom. The Fall wet-weather smells are amazing! |
Of course my luck with a tailwind both ways couldn't hold up. But that's OK.
Last night we had a "dress rehearsal" of the opera I'm in, called the Mile Long Opera. It was actually a performance. It's on the High Line which is a public park converted out of an elevated freight railroad. We stand on the High Line repeating the same few lines while the audience hears the story by moving through us. The course is actually a mile and a half long. I had to stand and repeat my lines for three hours. A thunderstorm started right after we were done, and we got wet walking back to the indoor green room. I rode my bike home in the thunderstorm and got very wet. My brakes don't work very well in the rain. I had to leave my bike shoes at home to dry out. I wore running shoes on my ride to work. Tonight is an official performance, though I don't know what the difference is, as the public came last night, and it was full length. One of these days I really must figure out how to video my commute. Today would have been a good day, because there were so many bike commuters. There are always weird characters. Both yesterday and today, there was a guy on bike who appeared to have a propeller above his head. As he got closer, I saw it was the handle of a floor pump in his backpack. He carried a floor pump two days? Does he need it every day both at home and at work? |
A cool, clear morning. Humidity was high, but I got in before the temperature started creeping up (too much).
Noteworthy commute: I saw two other people on bikes this morning. That's about two over my average (it's not like NYC down here, Tom!) |
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...36c1acc77.jpeg Installed mudguards today. I wouldn’t say fenders. $12 Amazon for fork, seat, and down tube. |
Been riding behind a kettle; guess his dynamo. And yesterday, a rat almost caught my front wheel. Having fun everyday.

how do you like the one on the fork? is it worth it alone for Mountain biking?
If you are thinking about your Krampus remember you have more head space to your fork crown than I do to the bridge of my lowers. I’m not sure it would protect much more than the lower headset Also, your fork has eyelets, mine doesn’t |
Wait, I was thinking of RubeRad, wasn't I? Oops... sorry about that
Having tried these today, I'm getting some more substantial fenders - one for the front and a similar one to put in the rear like a hugger. I thought about just adding another package of these in other places around the bike but I think these gave me a better idea what I really need |
Nice morning for a ride. A bit warmer and more humid. Possible high of 90F this afternoon. I think they call it "Augtober."
I'm off work tomorrow, so this is my Friday. |

Dropped 5 degrees by the time I got to work. I love fall but I hate the winds it brings. Going through the river bottoms just intensifies the wind and it really sucks!.. /rant over! .
|
Wet and headwind. Lucky me, a cold front moves in early this afternoon and I'll have a headwind going home too
