You are correct Jupe, most of the people that own them don't need them, but some of us do. It's not the vehicle that is a bad thing, it's the people that purchase them without the need. That is the same with most things, most of us don't need to live in a 10 room house, but some do. and most of us don't need or can justify a $5000 bicycle, but some can. If you worry about your lungs, what about the cig. smoke I smell from cars, some of them with the windows closed. Second hand smoke is worst for your lungs than Co from autos wil ever be, yet we quietly live in a society that allows smoking in public.

WOW! Mrfix, your lucky! I just checked several sites, and the best MPG for the Excursion that I found was 15 MPG highway, the worst 7 MPG town, and 11 MPG average of many owners. These numbers were posted by Excursion owners, hopfully "real world" enough for you. And yours gets by far the best - somthing to be proud of. And, whoever you got your 4Runner info from must be really unlucky, because the MPG I found for the 4runner was 18-24 MPG. I'd hang on to your Excursion if I were you, because it is one of a kind.

Also bear in mind that I specifically attacked those who use it as a single occupancy "status vehicle." By the way I could give a flying rat's hind quarters about how "special" your gas hog is, because if a couple of college kids can get a van to run on used cooking oil the auto industry with all there research dollars can sure as heck make a vehicle that can accomplish what you "need" to do that can do better than 15 MPG. Well Rayin, I think we beat this to death, If I remember correctly, you took the first shot. I bought it because I need the room for bikes and riders, and to tow heavy loads on a regular basis both for pleasure and for work, It never rolls lightly loaded, I have a justy for that (43 mpg), it's scary car, I feel safer on the bike. I agree with the misuse of the vehicle and others like it. I feel everyone should cycle whenever possible, that's how I rack up so many miles on the bike. Soccer mom's should drive mini-vans. Have fun and keep turnin the cranks.

In fact, I believe manufacturers are pretty much allowed to lie about the mpg, because laws which regulate them allow them to submit an 'average' MPG, which they often calculate by averaging in some of their more fuel-efficiant models. (I heard about this practice many years ago, though, and they might have tightened up that rule by now.)

sadley, the hummer and some other large expensive suv's have recently seen another jump in sales as pres bush has pushed a tax relief for heavier "trucks".
it came from an old bill that gave a tax relief to farmers and other industrial workers for the purchase of their necessary industrial and farming machines. i don't have the stats handy, but it was an issue of weight. in those days, no car weighed close to as much as a hummer these days. only huge industrial tractors or equipment weighed that much. so, if your rig weighed over a certain amount, you got some help from the government.
now business owners are buying the biggest suv's and getting a generous portion of it paid for by our tax dollars.
this is yet another irresponsible action that the bush administration is supporting.

another intersting note: i don't know if it's just a state-wide thing, but in oregon there is a penalty for registering a fuel efficient car. registration prices are twice as high for an electric hybrid car as any other car or truck or suv.

Put me in the camp of "land yacht" owners. I drive a '92 Buick Roadmaster. In eleven years and 125,000 miles I have replaced the alternator and the passenger side electric seat switch. Want something bigger and you have to get an Excursion. But, my bike fits in the trunk (with front tire removed) and my second bike behind the front seats. And it is very comfortable. All the while I get 20 mpg average tank after tank of gas. 24+ mpg on the highway at 75 mph (but who would drive that fast - is illegal). When this sucker dies in another five or six years, I hope GM is again offering something similar. At least if offers some protection should someone in an Excursion run into me.

Maybe we need bigger SUV's to protect us from other SUV's?

Soooo, I suppose they'll all go out and buy Hummers now. They have two models to choose from and most dealers can't keep them in stock they are moving so fast.

I'd drive an Original Hummer (non H2) but only with a Veggie Van conversion.

Ford has also recently killed the Thunderbird. Maybe they'll go back to the Falcon.
