I'm used to using flat pedals with pins for grip, but my girlfriend is a bit wary of catching herself in the shin. Does anyone know good grippy flat pedals that don't rely on pins for foot retention?

Check out MKS pedals. They are standard on many folding bikes.

Lots of pedals that bike shops like for test rides have molded plastic ridges. They cost eight or twelve bucks on Amazon. And of course there are the pedals for comfort bikes that often have rubber covers.

Moving up to brand names, Race Face Ride is nearly the same as Chester but with molded plastic pegs.

I use those plastic or "resin" pedals on all of my bikes. The ones that are upscale -- 12 bucks on Amazon. They're grippy enough.

I like the vp538. It has plastic pegs that are reasonably grippy, built-in reflectors, and sealed bearings.

It has been white labeled under names like: Redline Monster PC, Black Ops Nylo-Form, Procraft Freeride Comp Nylon, and as one of Rivendell's recommended pedals.

Look geo city pedals provide good grip without the pins. The entire surface is vibram rubber.

I don't really understand your comment. Those pedals are very good, and do not cut your shins when you hit them like the platform pedals with the pins. They are a good compromise between the pedals with pins and a platform pedal with much less grippy plastic pins, which by the way can also inflict cuts to your shins when new, but not after they wear bit, when they also get less grippy.

As for the pedals, I have used them, and had no issues.

MKS has the 3000R, which is high quality but somewhat heavy and excessively large. Still, I like them more than metal-treaded pedals. I wear minimalist footwear so don't want any kind of pedal with an aggressive/abrasive tread, lest it wear through my sole.

I like these classic bear traps, have a bunch of them mostly for the cool colors. They are kinda terrible for bikes you actually intend to ride though. They are sharp as hell out of the box, and will damage you and anything you lean the bike against. I think most of the scratches on my bikes are from other bikes with these things.

They are also somehow slippery as hell when wet. It's possible they are better in the wet with a modern flat pedal specific shoe, but in my experience they are not great with normal street shoes. I would not use them on anything but a nice day cruiser bike.

This is not an endorsement, obviously, since I didn't buy them. But there's a pedal I found a couple years ago that I intended to buy for a build that never happened... it was very slim with grip tape and came in a variety of colors. No ball bearings, the housing basically makes a long bushing that captures the spindle with a dust seal by the screw. Don't they look cool? Like putting your foot on an Apple Watch and mashing it down over and over.
