How many bikes do you have?

I'm talking about operational bikes that you actually ride. I just received my midlife crisis bike and my wife wants me to thin my collection. I have 5 bikes now, all of which are very different:

1) Touring (my primary commuter)
2) Hybrid (my beater bike)
3) Racer (for climbing and when I want to feel sporty)
4) Tadpole trike/velomobile (for around town errands, and fun rides)
5) Highracer (midlife crisis bike for faster distance riding)

They're all special but the touring and hybrid are on the ones that will have to be let go despite many years of great service and over 40,000 miles on them. When I start a new job later this month, I'm going to make the racer and highracer my good weather commuters while the velo will be the bad weather commuter.

Since BF consists of cycling nuts, I'm just wondering where I fit in.

rando 04-05-07 02:18 PM

Only one that I ride. then my wife has a three-speed that she doesn't ride... and I have two others that I found that I'm going to paint and sell as "Art Bikes".

Flimflam 04-05-07 02:19 PM

Technically two, I think my old mountain bike is around somewhere in one of my relatives lofts or garages, but over this side of the pond I have just the one. Looking for a tourer, my budget should be intact in about 6 months so I'm slowly mounting up my research :D (I'm not confident enough to buy off CL/eBay yet)

knucklesandwich 04-05-07 02:26 PM

Kona Jake for commuting
Singlespeed MTB for bashing around the local trails
And the little lady has a Trek hybrid

cooker 04-05-07 02:28 PM

I said three. I have two I usually ride, one more that is ridealble, and one more that isn't.

JeffS 04-05-07 02:35 PM

Two currently, down from about six.

- Salsa Las Cruces - disc brakes R good
- Cannondale Capo - my entry into fixed-gear

- Seven Sola 29er currently disassembled
- Ridey Oval currently disassembled

pinkrobe 04-05-07 02:36 PM

I have two "daily drivers", which I will be replacing with a single all-purpose machine. I also have a dedicated mtn bike and a dedicated road bike. My wife has 4 bikes at present, although one of those is going away.

walterk46 04-05-07 02:41 PM

Three. The commuter-beater-errand all weather bike, my "nice" weekend bike (a Jamis Nova), and I just put together a fixed gear bike from some old parts.

voileauciel 04-05-07 02:47 PM

1. Commuter
2. Tourer
3. MTB
4. Vintage restoration project
5. Cheap BD Mercier that is solely responsible for my cycling addiction...

Benton 04-05-07 02:50 PM

Six Three for me one for my wife and two kids.

DataJunkie 04-05-07 02:51 PM

Two. About to give birth to number 3..... with my wallet.

1) Touring bike. All around commuter and recreational bike.
2) POS Huffy MTB. About to make it to the scrap heap
3) Roadie of undetermined model and make. To be determined in the next month.

Edit:
If I can count my entire house:
1 more for my wife.
1 Tricycle for the kid
1 Regular bike for the kid.

Mariner Fan 04-05-07 02:55 PM

Three and one frame soon to be built up.

Road bike - Lemond Malliot Jaune
Commuter - Trek 520
Extra Cool bike - Schwinn Voyageur 2
Frame that will have the paint removed to be all chrome - Pinarello Montello

wahoonc 04-05-07 02:58 PM

I have 9:eek: ...or more:p I actually inventoried bikes this past weekend (don't go there) but the final astounding count was 26. That does include my wife's 4 and about a dozen or so donor bikes. The short list for my riding pleasure:
1968 Raleigh Compact RSW folder
1972 Raleigh Superbe
197? Raleigh Sports aka Old Faithful
1974 Raleigh Sports Ladies
1989 Giant Excursion (tour bike)
1992 Giant Iguana (it just came back home last week from a 10 year hiatus)
199? Mongoose AX04? beater mtb for riding around the farm
2002 Staiger Florida (xtra cycle in the making)
2006 Redline 9.2.5 Fixie
I also have a 1975 Dawes that is getting built up as a club racer

Bride's Bikes
1940's? Hercules Skyliner
1971 Raleigh Colt
1996 Schwinn MTB
2000 GT Sidewinder

The rest are a varied selection most being of dubious parentage and quality, mainly dumpster rejects.

Aaron:)

The LT 04-05-07 03:02 PM

currently 7
3 MTBS although one will be sold soon
2 fixed gear conversions one to be sold soon
1 BMX
1 cruiser type

squeakywheel 04-05-07 03:04 PM

4 right now.

1. geared road bike
2. geared hard tail MTB
3. single speed road bike commuter (fenders and rack)
4. single speed rigid MTB commuter (fenders and rack)

I'm going to add a fixed gear road bike this summer. Looks like at 5 bikes, I'll have more than most people voting so far. I've always wanted to be above average.

Golf XRay Tango 04-05-07 03:09 PM

Currently 5
2 road bikes. (They're really similar, so I would like to upgrade to just one really good one)
1 cross
1 mountain bike (hardtail)
1 beater 1978 Nishiki ten-speed.

I'm trying to get through the year without buying any more :-)

I'd like to have a proper touring bike, and eventually to build a velomobile.

bmclaughlin807 04-05-07 03:14 PM

I have an '88 Raleigh Technium which is my main bike and commuter.
A mountain bike of unknown heritage rescued from a dumpster for REALLY bad weather
My wife has a Huffy Free Spirit road bike.

rykoala 04-05-07 03:14 PM

Two. My fixed gear commuter tank and my beat around the neighborhood fixed gear road bike.

My son has three bikes: a "funny" bike I made him, a bmx, and a 24" mtb.
My daughter has two bikes.
My wife has just one.

Then there are the donors. About 7 of them.

ax0n 04-05-07 03:19 PM

Two right now. I have the ghetto hybrid Diamondback Outlook (rescued from the rafters of someone's garage on Craigslist, never been ridden before I got it) and a used Diamondback Sorrento SE Front-squish MTB from the bike shop.

I ride them both frequently but with the weather being nice(r) lately I haven't been on the Sorrento as often.

Topher_Aus 04-05-07 03:31 PM

I have a 2004 Giant OCR2 that I bought second hand when my commute got longer, a 2006 GT Avalanche that was my main commuter but is now back to being used as a mountain bike, and a 2004 Giant Boulder. The Giant was my original commuter, but I got hit by a car and I got money to replace it. I replaced it with the GT, but I still fixed up the Giant Boulder.

ModoVincere 04-05-07 03:43 PM

3 about to be 2.
1) 2001 Univega Modo Vincere....this is for the days I feel like hauling a$$.
2) 10spd Puch Path Finder I found at a goodwill for $16. Need to true up the rear wheel, in fact I'm taking the rear wheel to the LBS tomorrow to get it rebuilt.
3) Wally World Schwinn hard tail MTB. Selling this one as soon as I can. It was a fun bike, and nice to be able to go off road with it especially when all the cars were hugging the right side of the road to try to stop me from passing. But, its just not really my style bike. I much prefer a road bike.

Chuck G 04-05-07 04:17 PM

3 bikes for me, 5 1/2 total:

2007 Novara Randonee touring bike, bought in March for commuting and maybe towing the kid's trailer.

1991 Raleigh Olympian road bike, this is the bike I started commuting on. I don't plan on riding this bike anymore since I got the Randonee, the only reason I'm thinking about keeping it is to be a backup commuter bike.

1988 Nishiki Ariel rigid fork hardtail MTB, only used now for towing the kid's trailer and trail a bike. I have a secret desire to turn it into an Xtracycle so I can ride the kids around on it (I think the kids would love it, my wife thinks I need professional help).

My wife's Ross single speed that she never rides, my son's Trek Jet 20 that he's learning to ride on, an Adams trail-a-bike, plus a Burley cub trailer.

HardyWeinberg 04-05-07 04:36 PM

I voted 2 for me but there are more in the household (wife's bike, Thing 1's bike, 2 tricycles for Thing 2).

caloso 04-05-07 04:43 PM

4:

1) '00 Trek 5200, the race bike.
2) '89 Trek 660, the fixed gear commuter/rain trainer
3) '83 Caldaro, the neo-retro Italian road bike for long rides on nice days.
4) early 90s Specialized Hard Rock, craptastic mtb for pulling the kids' trailer, running errands, occasional off-road adventures.

And I have an Al/CF frame I'm building up as a triathlon bike. I better get around to it since I have duathlon next week.

Brandish 04-05-07 04:54 PM

Probably to many for the small space that we have to keep them in. I have 5.
1) Langster racked and fixed. Use it for grocery trips and errands around the city.
2) Scott Speedster. Was my training bike, still use a couple times a week.
3) Pedal Force RS. New training bike couldnt pass up the deal on the Group buy my fiance is still mad about that one.
4) Giant STP1. Free ride bike use it for trails and just beating the hell out of.
5) Specialized P2. Stripped it down and I use it for a skate park bike.

Im about to pull the trigger on a new build for my fiance just not sure what Im going to build yet so will be 6 soon.
