Can anyone recommend reflective patches that can be sewn on to a backpack, but where the reflective part is removable (i.e velcro)?

Generally I ride with a rack and trunk, but the new bike I'm looking at buying will require me to commute with a backpack. I'd like the backpack to have a bunch or reflective tape on it for visibility, but...

1. All the reflective tape I've owned always falls off, and

2. I also use this backpack for other purposes, and don't want godawfully bright refletive tape on it all the time.

Good safety equipment stores sell 3M cloth reflective tape that can be sew on clothing. I have used it in underground mines on my clothes and looked like a glowing skeleton. With a good needle you can sew it onto velcro tape.

Get some loop-side velcro to sew onto your backpack
Get some hook-side velcro to sew onto 1 1/2" wide sew-on reflective tape

Stupid me! I have some jog-lite reflective bands that attach with velcro on my backpack. I just loop them around a couple of straps on the pack.

Heres a pic. the two bright yellow ones in the center of dull yellow ones are jog lites band. They are not as bright as the saftey vest above but they do work.

where do you guys get this tape? 3m reflective tape, not the Velcro.. l went out last night looking for it, I went to home depot, walmart, and look online at harbor freight and didnt find it. where do u pick it up.

NAPA Autoparts carries rolls of reflective tape. A good marine supply store will have some of the Solas in packs.

Anyone considering relflective tape should also look at Reflexite. Its main advantage is that is reflects light at angles much better than others. In other words, a car's headlights don't have to be aimed directly at you to illuminate you. That can be a good thing.

Buy a <$5 reflective vest at Harbor Freight, and wrap it around the backpack when you wear it. Excellent visibility and comes right off when you want to use the backpack off the bike.

Yep that's excatly what I did. I bought reflective vest and I wrap it around my camelback pack I use few zip ties to hold it all together. I still have easy access to my pack compartements without removing it.

Rivendell sells a spoke reflector that has velcro back. It can be attached through loops and easily removed.

Another suggestion: I glued reflective strips to an old winter shell jacket. You have to buy this special fabric glue at a fabric shop. So far, the strips have not fallen off. I've ridden with this jacket in rain and light snow, too.

I think this is a lot better than sewing since you won't have to poke holes in your backpack. I didn't want to poke holes in my jacket since I thought rain could go through.
