Our company bought a vacant big box store. I keep my bike in a restroom converted for storage in the warehouse section. 25+ people on 3rd and only a few have a clue. Never lock it at work. Did get permission and clean the floor if too much weather slop tracked in. Being a big box store, people don't go in the back unless they have to do something - its too far to walk

Under the stairway at the side entrance to the building. There are hundreds of people there but even unlocked I don't ever worry about it. The smokers that are almost constantly outside that entrance, and most of the people you'd have to push the bike through 200 feet inside, all know the bike is mine so I don't think anyone could make off with it. The building is badge-controlled entry.
Besides, even when I park at stores around here, I never lock, and hardly anyone else does either, and I've not heard of any problems with bike theft.

My last two jobs have had secure parking in the underground parking garage. Currently, I ride up to a key-card access door, swipe, walk my bike to one of the 80 spots in the room, put it in the rack and walk away. A couple of people lock their bikes up, but I've never bothered. One guy rides his Cervelo R3 to work in the summer, and doesn't lock it. It's warm, secure and a couple of people even store basic tools there for everyone to use.

I park my bike under a stairway right off the parking lot. convienently, there's a heater in the stairwell to melt the snow off and dry things off so my bike doesn't get rusty.

In my office. Fortunately I've got a fairly large office room and nobody minds me wheeling my bike down the hall. I don't ride on rainy days either, so I'm not leaving tracks on the carpeting.

Guys let me give you a good bit of advice

If you are taking your bike to work for the first time and there is enough space to store your bike in the office and out of the way, DO NOT ASK PERMISSION BEFORE YOU STORE IT. Your boss is much more likely to refuse if you ask rather than if he comes in and sees the bike there. It also gives the boss more chance to see it's not causing an obsruction before he refuses.

Has anybody noticed how people in the same company get inspired when they see you cycling to work. I sit there and listen to them saying how much they need to get to the gym and lose weight while I sit there scoffing tea and biscuits still looking as skinny as the day I lost my cherry :-)

Even though there is a bike rack where I work at I don't use it because its right next to shopping carts and barely 2 feet from the truck loading zone. I lock my bike up against the pole in front of an abandoned movie theater across the street. Nothing ever happens to my bike there.

I couldn't agree more about not asking for permission. That's what I did, and no one complained; kind of like 'squatters rights.'

Since I started bike commuting, I've had two others try, but not with any consistancy.

The room my boss let me put it in has a heater or something of the sort so I lock my bike chain up to the piping. It is computer automated because its through the city so if anyone wants to disengage it, it would make a mess and be laud as hell.

I would use this idea when taking a bike to a location where you don't know the people - like say into a fast food joint. I just bring inside rather than asking if I can. But at your workplace, if its going to be your boss who would be bothered, I would definitely ask first. (security guards on the other hand I would not ask first) I usually put my bike on a rack in the underground car park. One day I forgot my lock and brought it up to an out of the way spot in our office. The office manager was quite bothered by this - I guess primarily because our office lease agreement says no bicycles in the building. Anyway, I can see that it might be okay in that someone can visualize it first, but in most cases if they were of the mind to say NO to begin with, they will still be bothered by seeing the bicycle, and are most likely going to be peeved at you.

In the warehouse, next to the other 100+ bikes, and 250+ bikes in boxes. Or if it's slow, I'll keep it in the shop area, in a spare stand.

Oh, it helps to work at bike shop

About 3 ft away at the end of my cube. It's been bumped once, but other than that, no one says anything.

At work, I can park my bike in my office or in the break room. There are only two people in the office so security is not much of a problem.

In my office, right across from my desk.....where I can sit there and look at it and daydream about riding it when I'm not riding it
