I've had good success with SKS fenders and I'll be trying out some Planet Bike Cascadia fenders when my LBS gets them in - they've rec'd good reviews.

I've got the cascadia fenders, and i cannot find a complaint about them. The extra long mudflaps keep the water from praying onto my shoes. I found them online for the same price as the freddy hardcore fenders, so it was a deal i guess. The silver color is a bit more retro than the black, and i like that. Some of those beautiful handmade wood fenders would be awesome, but i have not been able to convince myself to spend that kind of cash.

I put some of these on my Tricross last night. The look nice and are easy to put on, but they fit odd on this particular bike. The OP might have the same issue with his Trek. They mount, but look a little "off".

I've had SKS on my CrossCheck fixed gear commuter for three years now and still working great. Only complaint with them is that the rear brake bridge support broke and I had to rig an alternative support.

I got some Planet Bike Freddy Fenders for $25 from Performance. They come in various widths, mine are for 35's on my Trek FX 3.

I have the Planet bike fenders on two of my bikes and the SKS chromplastics on one of them. Both are very good. The SKS cost about $10, more but I don't think they are worth $10 more.
The PB fenders have mud flaps. However, the SKS front fender is longer. The Planet bike fenders are easier to mount and remove. The SKS fenders have a more classic look. With the SKS fenders, the support attaches to the fender a bit lower so that it can catch the front of your foot in a slow turn. But with the PB fenders, your foot can still hit the mudflap. The mudflap on the PB fender is kind of too short.

I give my vote to SKS. They look more traditional and I like their mounting system better. I had a set of Planet Bike Freddy Fenders on my Surly Pacer. They fit fine when I was running 700x25 tires, but when I switched to 28s I had a rub on the rear that I couldn't get rid of . The problem is the way the rear fender mounts. SKS fenders have a thin metal L-shaped bracked that is attached to the rear fender and attaches to the brake bridge. PB fenders use a separate plastic bracket that bolts to the rear brake bridge, and the fender fits to that. The plastic bracket is too thick for my situation. I could have zip tied it, I suppose, but SKS fenders worked better for me. I don't think anybody running discs or cantis would have this problem. I just had limited clearance on my bike with my brakes. But SKS worked.
