Installing Panniers?

ok, so I'm trying to set my bike up for commuting and I've got a rack installed:

And these panniers:

The back of the panniers have hooks on top, with velcro hooks next to them. Simple, They go on the top bar of the rack. There is also a Y shaped elastic strap with a plastic hook on it that runs from top to bottom of the back of the bag to anchor it nicely. The only problem is, I can't figure out what it's supposed to hook on to? Thanks in advance for any help.

Your rack doesn't have the "usual" flat/hook spot for ease of installing the panniers. But..I think you can hook it where the middle and rear verticle supports are welded together...at least it looks that way from your picture, if in fact that is your exact rack. I'd line the hook up with the middle support, so a tang is on either side of it. The rear tang will want to slide up that angled support, but the verticle one will prevent it from moving, so it will be effectively wedged there at the weld.

Orangeleader is correct looking at the picture you attached. If it doesn't work to hook the bottom hook of the pannier to the junction of the 3 tubes in the rack I would suggest buying a small hose clamp that would fit around the rear tube of the rack (the one that slopes up to hold up the rear of the rack). Tighten the hoseclamp around the tube near where it joins the other tubes, with the screw on the bottom side of the tube. That will provide a stop to keep the pannier hook from sliding up the tube and coming loose.

You can also buy little hooks that attach to the bolt at the bottom of the rack. I think they're called "touring hooks". Your LBS may have them.

yea, that is the exact rack. It doesn't seem possible to put the hook on the junction, but the hose clamp solution sounds like a winner. I'll give it a shot...now if the weather would cooperate, I could actually ride.

I have the identical issue with my racks, although my current pannier doesn't use an elastic hook system, so it's not an issue for me. I've been thinking about getting a new pannier that does use a bungee hook system, and I just thought of something. Couldn't we just use a picture or mirror hanger and use it like a washer to the bottom pannier bolt? There are so many types of hangers that you could get whatever hook works for your pannier system. Zip tie loop at the bottom. Hook the pannier's elastic bottom hook to the zip tie.
Just go around all 3 bars down there with the zip tie. The V shape will keep the zip tie from riding up. hook to that. Problem solved for 5 cents. See you on the commute!

BTW that elastic stuff will not live long... It may make it a couple years but it will eventually fail. When that happens go to the local hardware or Home Depot and get a couple of long springs and attach them to the D rings at the bottom of your top hooks, then get an S hook and put the bottom of the springs together and put the S hook through these springs... making a V. The S hook can then be used to clip to the same attachment point as others have mentioned... the junction of the rack bars at the bottom. I have been using the same panniers for 20 years with this arrangement (I keep patching holes in the cloth parts of the panniers, but the frame and internal stiffener are in great shape).

To easily remove the panniers, I just lift up enough to clear the top hooks, then lower the panniers enough to take the tension off the springs which allows the S hook to drop free... quick one handed operation.

I ended up going for the zip tie solution. Works perfectly. Thanks for the idea.

The bottom end of the spring on the back of my pannier (Cannondale) ends in a ring which is supposed to be attached to a small hook bolted onto the bottom of the lowrider (front) rack (also Cannondale). Here's a picture of the pannier, for reference:

What I am looking for is a set of the hooks - the originals (from Cannondale) look like this (toothpick for size reference):

Any ideas where I can find these, or similarly dimensioned, hooks? Thanks.

No. These are too wide to fit the ring hook on my pannier springs (I have tried it).

Besides, I believe this Jannd hook is designed to be mounted to the top edge of the pannier and then hooked onto the top rail of the rack (but that's neither here nor there).

#11, those are Top hooks..

you just need a hook on the bike near the wheel to hook your bungee /shock cord over.

then you pull against the elastic tension to bring the bags top hooks over the racks top rail.

alternatively , loosen one end of the Bungee from the Bag, pass a steel ring over it ,
and re attach the cord.

then you hook the ring over the frame mount,
It can be a collection of a bolt and a nut and a flatwasher to hook that ring over.

A guitar strap button would make a tidy way
to make a bottom anchor, on the frame.

At the racks bottom there are height adjustment bolts , a natural place to add a hook for a pannier lower tie down.

Exactly: That part - the hook pictured in #10 - is what I am looking for and wondering where to source from.

(As this setup is for a lowrider front rack the hook will go onto the rack and not onto the bike frame, but that's neither here nor there, either,)

The Jannd hooks are intended as top hooks, but they've worked well for me for bottom hooks on the one bike whose rack didn't have a built-in hook.

If you need something smaller than the Jannd hooks, that's something small enough you can make it yourself with pliers and have it work just fine. I'd probably bend one up out of an old broken spoke.

These are lower hooks, from Banjo Brothers. These are to be mounted on racks, close to the dropouts. Got 'em.
