panniers fell off

I'm a newbie, just got panniers put on at the shop, and they fell of when I jumped a curb. The bungie hook isn't tight enough and the top hooks aren't very secure on my rack--I think. Any advice? Any panniers your recommend that don't fall off?

What brand and model?
There are a few different types of attachment systems.
I had to adjust my lower hook by loosening a screw. The upper ones were adjustable as well.

I made my own using the Arkel hook kit and an old bag. The hooks secure pretty good and haven't bounced off yet. The hook got torn off by my spokes, but amazingly my wheel is still true.

all the saddle bags I have seen would be too small for my needs when I have books to carry.....

as for pannies, I think I will never ever buy any again. I will make them... but that Arkel hook set mentioned above is too expensvie, I can get road ready panniers for the price of the kit....

I was worried about the forum when I didn't see you posting for a bit.
I used to commute on a fixie with rack and panniers. I don't see why it would be a big deal.

It is only a big deal for those who would make decisions on selecting their bicycling equipment based on what it looks or sounds like to cycling hipsters and Internet strangers; someone who would post the question in the OP.

Thanks for your concern of my whereabouts, but you should worry more about the time warp you must be stuck in; the post you referenced is over two weeks old and I've posted lots of pearls of wisdom before and after.

Yeah there was an access problem where I continued to get busy message whenever loggin in, no matter what computer or browser or network, but not when a guest. Brian could not find the problem and for awhile I used a different moniker, with Brian's knowledge until one day the problem mysteriously went away. A few jokers claimed I was banned, but that was just wishful thinking of a few dullards.

I'm sure. I didn't see the post date. I just noticed your absence, figuring you got fed up with it.

No, BF still has entertainment value for me and occasionally I find something about bicycling worth knowing, or at least thinking about, amongst all the psychobabble, freshman sociology, and dreck about which is the ultimate this or that product..

I learned last week that on a racing bike you sit on your crotch. Apparently I have been doing it wrong sitting on my sit bones. lol

More dreck about the ultimate products: I've got Ortlieb Backrollers on my Bianchi San Jose (set up SS) that I did some loaded (flat) touring with and have used for groceries. In response to a previous poster having issues with panniers bouncing off, these ones won't. They're a bit heavy though. You can set them right to the back of the rack - I think I've hit them a couple of times with my heel but nothing major, push 'em back and they are fine for me. I really start missing gears though when loaded down with groceries and having to face hills...

I am not worried about what brand of panniers to get, that I will take care of myself, pickings are slim here in Hungary and I will likely make my own.

I was just worried that a fixie will not stop properly with the weight of panniers... yeah, it sounds silly, but I got this from the fixie riders I teach and from some lbs tech guy when I happened to ask about fixie hubs and then about panniers on a fixie... so I turned here, thinking this place will probably give me better answers.

I love the paniers MEC sells here... they are pretty much bombproof and have a lifetime guarantee.

I am also fan of fenders on my commuters.

sixty-fiver.

that second bike is called a Camping Bike here in Hungary because you could take it in your car when the family went to some camground for summer vacation.. I did not know they existed out side of the Eastern Bloc.

I will check out MEC on line, curious about those bomber panniers.

robi - Folding bikes are becoming more and more popular here after being absent from the cycling market for some time... mine is a 1972 Phillips Twenty that was made by Raleigh (England).

I regularly commute on a fixed gear using an Arkel Bug pannier. The fixed gear I ride is a track style bike with short chainstays, so I went with a long and strong rack, the Old Man Mountain Red Rock, to get adequate heel clearance.
