Think you've had dog trouble?
Doesn't get much worse than this pack of pig dogs attacking a cyclist.
Nasty.
"the boy was cycling through Waitoa when the pitbull-greyhound cross dogs escaped from their owner's garden.
"He was attacked for a couple of minutes and received in excess of 100 bite wounds, mainly to his arms and legs, many of the wounds are down to the bone," "

I didn't even look at the pictures. Too much fear for me.
Those same dogs would have nailed a walker, too. People just need to have control of their dogs. It's a pet-peeve of mine, having grown up in a household where dogs were expected to behave. One lick of the balls would get them thrown out of the house. One growl or attempt at runaway would get them tossed down, face-up, in a choke-hold. One paw on the leg would mean a big fight with my mother, who does not play, which would end in the dog doing several "tricks" for minor rewards.
I've been reading about the ammonia solution for those who have to ride by irresponsible pet owners. It sounds like a good one.

I like riding FG in the winter cuz I want to work up some body heat, and I'll switch it to SS in the summer cuz I'm doing the opposite.
As far as SSFG vs geared vs hybrid vs blah, I've never met a bike I didn't like. They each have their advantages.
Except for unicycles; those are for weirdos.

...Oh, I just figured it out! The response to me and the original poster were separate.

...Yeah, I grew up in a serious household. My mama ain't taking no sh!^ off no-one! She's confronted meth addicts before, and I've seen her reach down a dog's throat for a piece of hot dog he wasn't supposed to take. Her grandmother used to go out and fight a bull with a pitchfork on her farm, just for kicks. My little bicycle-riding journeys don't amount to much in comparison to that.

err, uh, somehow i managed to reply to the wrong thread last night. but ociffer, i'd only had 3 beers...
so, anyways, yeah rabid dogs suck and stuff.
i like the idea someone had from a previous dog thread of using lemon juice instead of ammonia to avoid mishaps. Not sure it would hold back these pig dog things though.

A lady up the block from me has a small (10 lb.'ish) dog that chases by me every day I go run.
Recently she yelled at me because I stopped, put my hands up and turned to her with the dog on my sock still trying to destroy my leg and simply said:
I'll sue your ass if he breaks skin
Her reply was:
He's not going to bite you! Stop being over-dramatic!
Soon as she called the dog off, I sat down, took off my $12 sock that was torn and mangled and explained that she might want to rethink what she defines as 'bite' and called the police. The dog is okay, but she's pretty pissed now that she got a ticket for an unrestrained animal in city limits, attacking a city official and as the officer explained "should consider replacing my socks."
Next time the dog chases me on my bike, I'm going to see if I can still bunny-hop, otherwise that ladies going to be picking spokes from her teeth.
The dog on the other hand, just needs to find a new master or learn to leash itself.

my smartwools are around $12. worth every penny for me cuz they are more comfortable, breath well, and outlast my cotton socks 3 or 4 times as long it seems. and they don't stink as much as synthetic stuff.

Agree. I have been lucky enough to catch all of my Columbia socks on sale, but I certainly prefer to wear them when I am doing anything non-sedentary.

In a lot of cities and even states, there is a "one free bite" law, which allows a dog to live if it bites someone... BUT the owner has to post signs stating the dog is dangerous and keep the dog restrained on the property. If the dog is loose again, it could be possible to have the town's SPCA come by to encourage the owner to comply with the law.
If the dog does bite you again, I'm sure there are plenty of personal injury attorneys who will be happy to teach the offending women in front of a judge that having loose, dangerous dogs is against civil and criminal laws.

Yesterday while cycling, I came upon a large Rott with a smallish female companion human on its leash. Seeing me, the woman clamped onto the dogs collar with both hands, and got herself into as sturdy of a stance as she could manage. The dog then started growling and lurching, causing the woman to fall to the ground while being dragged (not far) by a dog that clearly out weighed her. Thankfully she didn't let go, or my streak of never being bitten or injured by a dog while riding may have been put in jeopardy!

Last week I had a medium size black lab come hauling arse out of the front yard where it was playing with his\her family. Whereupon a chase was had until I turned around and yelled at the lab to go home. The dog turned tail and ran home. I have no idea why that worked since go home is not a normal command. My mind was going to say no or sit but that came out instead. Better than pepper spraying the dog.
