Pitlocks for cross check?
I want to buy a pair of pitlock skewers to protect my wheels, but I'm not sure if the rear skewer will work for a Surly Cross-check. The skewer is made for vertical dropouts and doesn't have the clamping power to support horizontal dropouts. The C-C has semi horizontal dropouts so I have no idea if the two are compatible. Has anyone tried this?

If it doesn't hold you can add a Surly Tugnut.

If they won't hold, then for security reasons they're kind of pointless though... In which case I suggest a cable in addition to your U-Lock.
Depending on where I lock up, I have a 6' cable that I string through my wheels and loop over the shackle of my mini-U.

I use Pinhead locking skewers (I assume Pitlocks are very similar) on my Cross Check and have had no problems. They have never ever slipped, so I wouldn't worry about that. Make sure you install the drop-out spacers screws as well as this will make installing the rear wheel much easier with these.
I usually just use the skewers and a Kryptonite mini U Lock through the frame, but if I lock my bike somewhere for a long period of time or anywhere sketchy I use a cable through my front and rear wheel as well.

what kind of hub do you have? you could convert to bolt on axle on the rear and get the pitlock rear bolt on lock. although i always lock through the seattube/rear wheel with a u lock or chain. most people only need the pitlock for the front wheel....

Unless you have upgraded your wheels, the pitlocks will cost close what it would probably take to replace your wheel. I thought about doing the same thing, but backed off due to price. [edit - I have the stock Cross Check - if I had high end wheels I would go for pitlocks, btw.]

Do the outer surfaces of the dropouts on the C-C have any corrugation? I have a vertical elongated dropout for a OEM Rohloff hub and the outer surface is smooth on one side. I couldn't get the Pitlock to hold on that smooth aluminum for the life of me. The Pitlock skewer holds fine on my Surly fork though.

You can get "Set 02" Pitlocks for front and rear wheels and seatpost, for $72.99 from Urban Bike Tech.

I think you are mistaken...or, you're running some really crappy wheels.

I bought my set of Pinhead skewers (2) for $50. My rear wheel costs about $200, the cassette costs $75, tire and tube cost about $40. Also, the Pinhead site says that they will work fine with horizontal drop-outs (I can attest to that), whereas the Pitlock site says that they are not recommended for HDOs.
So:
1 Pinhead skewer=$25
Replacing my rear wheel=$315
Spending 5 minutes writing a reply that no one will read=Priceless

I paid 18 euros in france for these locking skewers https://www.oredon.com/content/en/produits.php?id=24
They work great, but unfortunately i don't think you can get them in the states.
