Fenders

Is it normal to have to cut a fender (atleast back one) to have it fit?

I am really cutting my luck as it will start to rain hardcore soon.

I am riding a trek 7100 (here is a review)

There is a cable on the back of the seat post that heads to the bottom. I was hoping to get fenders, back rack with panniers soon at same time.

Bikes: See my sig...

The Trek 7 series bikes do have this issue as the front derailer cable runs down the back of the seat tube and gets in the way of the fender.

I have seen some novel solutions and the neatest has been to drill a hole though the fender so the cable can pass through.

So you have to detach the cord..drill a hole...and than attach the fender and run the cord through the hole? (Sorry run on sentence)

Remove the cable, mount the fender and the drill a smallish hole where the cable will pass through.

And pictures would be really helpful.

My SKS fenders have a small clip on the front, near the front derailer cable.
I got away with using two plastic cable ties to cinch that clip to the chainstay on each side.

While I have no experience with that bike, I have mounted fenders with much less clearance than that. Go for it.

The OP is not having clearance problems it is a "cable in the way" problem. I think Sixty Fiver has the answer. Except that still will not allow mounting the inside curve of a full fender to the downtube.

It looks like there's a good inch between the tire and the cable. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the FD-tire clearance looks good, too. And if you mount the fender to the seat stay and chain stay bridges, you don't need to mount it to the seat tube.

I've never mounted a full set of fenders yet where I didn't need to fiddle and modify something. It's seems par for the course and drilling a passthrough hole for a derraileur cable is something to just be taken in stride.

Mind you I tend to be fussy about how they fit so that probably leads to some of my fussing over stuff that other folks may or may not bother with.

Have you test fitted a fender? I used to have a 7200,and I had a set of full SKS's on it. The cable came close to the fender, but didn't touch. Only issues I had were finding a short enough bolt for the fork brace mount and I had to leave the 'safety clips' off the front struts.

Looks like enough room to me as well. Zip tie the fender to the chainstays.

Rant: It seems that 99% of modern mass production bike manufacturers have given absolutely no thought to the use of fenders on their bikes. And it's not like there is a long list of expensive accommodations that need to be made to allow fenders: dropout eyelets, brake clearance, and a chainstay bridge. That's it.

And all of the changes that have been made to the modern road bike that have eliminated these three elements have not made the bike ONE SINGLE BIT BETTER. No improvement. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

I was fixing a neighborhood kid's cheap bmx bike this weekend and instead of a chainstay bridge there was a plate behind bottom bracket that served as a kickstand mount AND had a tab with hole for easily attaching a fender to. How can the makers of $60 crap bikes afford to have these features??!!!

Is fender mounting technology being kept secret from makers of high end bikes? Too late, I've seen that exact same chainstay plate with fender tab on a $3,000 A.Homer Hilsen. That Grant Peterson must have the best industrial spies.

Check out this thread. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...light=sks+7000

You want the SKS P45s. They flat-out work.

You're dead wrong. It's a HUGE improvement. .1sec/km MINIMUM in a long flat time trial! That figure goes through the roof if there are long downhills. You could gain as much as .25sec/km.

+1

It's good to have a dremel tool, a work stand and plenty of patience. Oh, and beer.

Yes, beer is mandatory to maintaining your sanity....

Going from backpacks to racks and panniers will really feel great for you. I ride with backpacks on a couple of bikes but I really prefer the racks and bags.
