Stop is stop is STOP. That means STOP, as in, stop moving your wheels. If you can keep your balance, more power to you, but a foot on the ground has simply GOT to be safer and more stable.

this is a bit run-on...but i am pissed....and bikeless
Tuesday morning on my commute to work I got hit. I was going straight through a green light when a lady on the other side of the intersection made a left turn right into me. She was coming fast and there was nothing i could do right before impact I closed my eyes (not very manly i know) and felt my body hit her hood then get thrown to the ground. I layed there flat on the pavement for a few seconds waiting to feel lots of pain but i was fine. Completely fine. Then I saw my bike under her front tire...UGHH. This guys calls the whole nine yards...police fire and abulance even though i told him i was fine. This lady goes " seeing he is okay, can't i just leave" lol anyways the police come and talk to us and she admits it was her fault and she was running late for an appointment and didnt see me. I stand my bike up...back wheels not turning fenders destroyed and the side of the bike is worn down from being rubbed against the road. Cop drives me to work with my bike in his trunk
. Anyways long story short there is 240$ worth of damage and labor to fix bike. At first when i called the lady she was asking if i was going to pay for the dent in her hood. I told her the accident was her fault and she can get a copy of the police report. I asked her for her insurance policy number and she said she wouldnt give it to me..WTF??? After calling her a few more times she said she would call the bike shop and get an invoice and pay it. She then started stirring crap up there saying the price was to much and shouldnt cost more the 80 dollars. My bike is now done but they wont give it to me until they are paid. I thought about paying them and having the lady pay me but she said she won't pay me. I have been commuting on my bike for 17 weeks straight. Never missed a day...even in rainstorms. I went down from 198 to 170 pounds..it brought a sense of joy to me life. This lady cut me down...broke my stride....ruined my week. If she doesnt pay by Monday what steps should i take?

I suppose she thinks that no bike repair should cost more than $80 because you can buy a bike for that much at Wal*Mart. Tell her that no car should cost more than the crappiest one you can find, either. I can buy a car for $1000, so no car repair on any car should cost more than that. I think you have to go down to a real junker used car to have the equivalent in car terms of an $80 Wal*Mart bike.

actually, one better would be to take judo/jiu jitsu lessons. They learn how to fall before they start teaching the techniques...

do you have a car? If so, call your insurance company. The police report will have her plate number and state. Ask your insurance company to find out who insures her vehicle. You should be able to make a direct claim to her insurance company without involving her. The police report and her own admission of fault will do it. That way she will at least be surcharged.
Other things to consider - was any of your clothing damaged? Shoes? Panniers damaged? You can get reimbursed from he rinsurance company for all of these costs. Don't undercharge your damages.

Even though you say you feel fine you should go see a doctor. Have them check you out. You could have hurt something and won't know it until you go to use that part of your body at a later date.

Best thing about putting a foot down is that it gives motorist an unambiguous signal that you have indeed stopped. Trackstands are great and have their place, but they can confuse motorists sometimes who aren't sure if you're going to accelerate again.

Glad you're ok... lawyer up baby. Every week that goes by the reward request should go up by a factor of ten. New bike time for sure, just because ....you never know how that frame was weakened by the accident. New clothes to replace all that were roaded up. 80bucks....
did you tell her that'll cover a good new tire? Her insurance company should be falling over themselves to make this go away but fast. You never know when you may develop pain and suffering... don't forget the nightmares.... this could go to 280,000$ fast. hahaha

This is the most important thing! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS go seek medical attention immediately! No matter how fine you think you are, if something develops later and you've waited a week or two to go to the doctor about it there is no way you can realistically blame it on the accident because too many things have happened in the interim that could have effected it. I would also push for the cost of an entire new bike instead of just the repair to yours, you never know what could be compromised.

On feeling "fine": Whiplash can creep up on you, I've been rear ended and felt fine, but later had a host of troubles as a result.
On clueless woman: she sounds like she's completely wrapped up in herself and ignorant of traffic laws. Which is all too common.
Not always cars vs. cyclists either, a friend of mine's 12 year old son was clipped by a car as he started to cross a street, bruised his arm, and broke their mirror. They turned around and came back, and demanded he pay for their mirror. Regardless of whose fault it was, they cared nothing about whether he was injured or not. Only about their mirror.
Car vs. car: Another friend was rear-ended-- in a sudden traffic slowdown because of a previous accident-- by a woman on her cell phone, and when they got out to look at the damage, she noticed my friend's truck was not damaged, but the front end of her PT Cruiser was destroyed. So she said to my friend, "Look what you did to my car!"
Fortunately a state trooper witnessed the accident on that one...

I tried the trackstand thing yesterday. I came to almost a full stop and rolled out just a little. There was a car trying to make a left turn into where I was coming out of, and I intended to go straight. I rolled a little bit as if I were going to make a right hand turn to give the guy room, but he didn't know what I was going to do so he waited, which was exactly what I didn't want. Well, you all know that situation. I thought of my earlier post in the thread when that happened and at the next intersection I just put my foot down and waited.
