So here we go! My in-process commuter in its natural habitat (my office). Still waiting on some wider tires and considering a pannier of some kind... Thanks to those who have been so helpful in my "getting started" thread! Though I posted a pic over there, I wanted to make sure to add it to this - the "official" bike pic thread!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/...6da76c8ec8.jpg Late '90s Bianchi Eros. I believe it's a '98, but I can't remember and don't know how to find out. Used to ride it regularly on weekend road rides when I lived in Florida, but since we had kids 4 years ago it's been hanging in my garage collecting dust. Since I work 3 miles from home, I figured I'd dust it off and get it in for a tune-up that ended up being a pretty major overhaul. The cables were in need of replacement and I ordered a more upright headset as well. |
I hate carrying a back pack on my back, but I like the cleaner look, and I am looking for a good rack (aesthetically).

ok...2.5 yrs commuting and I am finally posting pics!
on the rear 'night' pic, there is another PB SuperFlash near the wheel - I guess my camera did not get the flashing from the light at the right time. |
Wish I could say I built this up, but I didn't. Bought this from a friend in Houston 2 weeks ago. Been riding it to work. Sweet rack with quick release basket.
My first single speed -- I'm blown away by how fast it is. Really fun ride too. Gonna ride my Townie to work tomorrow -- first time using gears in a couple of weeks. Oh yeah -- this is Centurion mixte. Japanese built CrMo frame. All the moving parts rebuilt by Kirby the Zen Bike Mechanic -- the badge says "Texas Special", which is what Kirby puts on all his bikes. If you see one, buy it. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3056/...621ffd6e53.jpg |

The girlfriend's commuter I built up with the Pake C'Mute frame. I love those spoke reflectors, used the flash so you could see 'em, otherwise they're pretty invisible in normal light.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...2/pakebike.jpg It's a fairly solid frame, though it had a few imperfections when I got it that were more frustrating than anything else. Get what you pay for, I suppose. |
livingfortoday: How's the quality of the Pake frame? I've been considering one for awhile. Thnx
|
Pretty decent, though a bit heavier than similar frames. I actually got this frame because I really liked the Pake track frame I had built up (see here). It's held up great for its first two months of (ab)use so far, and I have no doubt it will continue to do so.

Just finished putting my new commuter together. It's a Giant Escape M2, with older Shimano Deore Mech, Shifters and Brake Levers. Also non-standard are the Specialized Hemisphere Armadillo 26x1.95 tyres, the Specialized saddle the Thorn handlebar and ODI grips. Replaced the very basic flats with some used and abused DMR V8's and it's ready to go.
Still waiting for mudguards and a Deore chainset before it's 100%. *oh, and it's a rather hefty 28lbs, but then it was chosen for sturdiness rather than flat-out speed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Photo00015.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Photo00013.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Photo00014.jpg |

It is awesome, I am not kidding when I say my commute is now 10 minutes faster! I need to figure out my lighting scheme still. I have smoother, but not slick tires, on the way as I would like to maintain some off road prowess. As for the rigid fork I am currently enjoying the bump absorbing ride of the front shock. Chicago streets are not the smoothest so it helps!
Thank you for the input! |

That's sick! What are those grips? I want them :)
New bikes can't be left sitting on the floor, pride of place on the sofa is required! |

Half of our set up (don't have a pic of my son's bike.) He rides his bike and my daughter rides the trail-a-bike - they're 7 and 3 respectively.
It's a '92 Bridgestone XO-2. I bought it from a local BF member who had taken very good care of it. He had it set up for touring for his wife. I put the moustache bars back on, replaced the saddle with this Brooks, replaced the clipless pedals with platforms and Powergrips and put the baskets on. I chose the baskets because they were a steal on CL. I love how much I can shove in them but I am thinking I'd like something I can take on and off easier. For the commute I have a bag with clothes and such, my briefcase with laptop, and a kids bag for daycare. Since we just started commuting I've decided if by August we're still going at it, I'll invest in some nice panniers. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f5...b/IMG_4532.jpg |

My Steve Rex townie, finally back in service after a job switch. It's equipped with a Nexus7 hub with roller brake (not the most effective brake). I'm 6' 5" and the frame is 66cm so people tend to move aside when they see the massiveness approaching!
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1.../rextownie.jpg The leather frame and saddle bag were purchased at Manufactum in Hamburg, but I don't think they stock them anymore! |
66cm? Dang! I'm 6'4" and I have a 63cm frame as seen above, and I think that's perfect. But to each his own. You're right about cars moving out of the way for us taller guys on tall bike.

Nice bike though, the spoke reflectors seem like a good idea (glow in the dark bling!). |
