I absolutely love the new Tiagra crankset. Goregous! How are you liking those discs?

You can run Shimano shifters under the tape if you use Nokon or some other super stiff housing. It comes out the side of the shifter and then you can route it back 180 deg under the cabling. Not the ideal solution like SRAM, but it's a solution if you've already got Shimano. Campy is more like SRAM, but I don't like the thumb levers, so that ruled them out. The SRAM shifts really nice, and was easier to setup than an Ultegra 10spd, IMO. Lighter and cheaper than Ultegra too...

Thanks for the comments on the Brodie!

I added a box to the back because it is easier just to throw my back pack in and ride than mess with panniers. The back pack was needed because I had to secure my bike a few blocks from where I worked, and it was easier to carry my clothes that way. Then I added huge reflectors to the back of the box because my morning commute was before sun rise.

Both you guys should look into the nashbar grocery bag pannier or the transit/performance one. I had your set up and switched and have never looked back. I just throw my work bag in the grocery bag pannier and take off. The lower center of gravity makes your bike handle better and topple less often when leaving it unattended. Just a tip.;)

The Nashbar townie is always on sale for $10.

thx pinkpowa. Very comfortable. As good or better than the all steel one it replaced. Very relaxed stance as you can see. Theft is a concern but security seems good.

Hey bsyptak. That sure is a nice bike. What kind of tires do you have?

bsyptak 04-23-08 03:33 PM

They are Ritchey WCS SpeedMax cross in blue. The tires came on the original bike and I'm guessing they are 5-7 years old. Only the black Pro version are still sold. Very unfortunate, I love the colored ones and I think others would too, at least in the standard colors other tires come in. I was lucky enough to find a future replacement NOS pair on Ebay a few months ago, so I should be good for the next 5 years. Hopefully they'll come out with colors again someday. Especially since cross bikes are becoming so popular.

Here is my new bike, a Swobo Dixon, just after getting it all ready for commuting. I bought it mainly for the internal gearing, the disc brakes, and the 26" tires (which I already have 3 pairs of, including new studded, from my other bike). I'm loving it. My commute is now faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Additions:

* Topeak Turbo Morph G frame pump
* Shimano PDM-324 pedals
* Zipp carbon fiber bottle cage
* Dinotte 200L-AA-S light
* Dinotte 140L-AA-R taillight
* Brass Incredibell
* Greenfield kickstand (not yet installed when photo was taken)

Special thanks to member K6-III, who suggested this bike for me - it's working out very well!

My 1962 Peugeot and my 1973 Phillips Twenty (both fixed gear).

The Peugeot carried me well over 5000 km last year and I'm still breaking in the Twenty which I can really see myself using for commutes as it is the perfect urban assault machine and great wet weather/ rain bike.

It (the P20)is deceivingly fast and accelerates very quickly and the 406 wheels are really built for our springtime roads which are rife with tire swallowing potholes... the ride on the 20 by 1.95 Kenda Kontacts is smooth and between those and the Brooks saddle the bike sucks up the bumps really well. This is good when the puddle you go through happens to be hiding a massive pot hole.

The Peugeot will see a lot more commuting miles this year too as although the Twenty is fast... the Peugeot crushes souls. :)

And she's pretty comfortable too.

My main commuter. A fixie I put together using an IronHorse MTB frame and various discarded parts. The BB, Brooks and seat post were purchased new.

Yes, I commute on THAT. Yes it weighs a few tons. But you know, it works. Really. Rumors that X-Mart bikes spontaneously desintegrate the moment you straddle the frame are somewhat exxagerated. Or so it seems so far . ;)

Looks quite functional. So what if it is not blessed by the Pope, made of the latest wonder metal, and cost more than a divorce. I bet you can haul a lot of groceries with it. :D

No, they're fine when they're new (if you're lucky enough to get one halfway properly assembled). It's when you need repairs....you'll find they aren't meant to be repaired.

Well, yes, assembly wasn't quite up to "buy and ride" standard :) As for its long-term reliability, - I know but with me being compulsive (if not always competent :) ) tinker this is a good thing, - gives me excuse to replace anything I don't like... :D
