The bars are Soma Sparrow. The break levers are Tektro Eclipse. I like the handlebars as they provide me several hand positions, and are narrow enough to be able to get through tight spaces.

In raw form right now, but just got this tonight. Was an 07 closeout at the LBS, got it for about 40% off, so i am pumped. And yes I am aware that BD has their version with full ultegra for not much more than I paid, but I wanted the LBS support, I get lifetime adjustments.

I usually use the front curves for stretching out. It also gives me a better aerodynamic
position when fighting a headwind. Most of my commute is along the Hudson river and the headwinds can get pretty nasty. |

Just a little update on my commuter bike.

I had too many issues with it. I also don't really use the Nashbar trunk bag too much these days. I really hate to buy a product that I cannot physically see and inspect first. The price was just too good to pass up. I'm sure I will still use it from time to time, just not as I originally intended. I have a hard lunchbox that I strap directly to my rack with 2 bungee cords. Then my hard hat lashes to my lunchbox. I commute in my work boots. And the current setup: http://i36.tinypic.com/212vpg2.jpg I went with a Bell seat post bag from MegaloMart. I looked at a couple different bags at my LBS, Sport Chalet and MegaloMart. The MegaloMart bag ended up being the best one for price. It was less than 7$. The Topeak, Trek and Anenir bags I looked at were all about 30$ or more and they were basically the same thing. So price prevailed. I did however support my LBS. I went in looking for a seatpost and came out with an aluminum Bontrager 27.2 x 350mm seat post. I also got some Pyramid bar ends. The pedal clips I bought last weekend and I love 'em! I've got some Pasela tires on the way via Nashbar right now. Up next I want to get some new pedals. One of them is breaking. Also want new cables throughout, fenders and a new saddle. I also need new shifters. My left shifter is broken and will only shift to two of the three chain rings. Right now I'm not using the smallest one.:( I would also like to redo the drive train and possibly true my rims. I've been toying with the idea of drop bars, but I dunno.....I like the bar ends, for now at least. |

Most of the additions have been free or cheap enough to keep the total investment under $35. The handlebars were off a discarded little girl's bike. The grips are off a discarded wheelchair. The seat was given to me by a friend when she replaced the seat on her Trek mtb. It is chained down with a bike chain. The fenders are off an old Armstrong. The rear rack was on clearance at Toys R Us for $1.62. The basket is an old high school gym locker basket. I did put on two Planet Bike Superflash blinkies, and a Planet Bike Beamer headlight. Those cost as much as the bike, but I can take them with me. The lock is a Kryptonite New York Noose. $70 of lock for $30 of bike. That ought to keep the thieves disinterested. Then I spent $90 on tires and blew my budget. Cest le' vie. |

It's great to see multiple incarnations of the same bike. Since your commuting in workboots, you might want to put toestraps on the toeclips. When I was commuting in winter boots last winter I bent mine open enough that one finally ripped out after catching on the pavement - I was riding the back of the pedal, just starting off. |
Tires and a lock........Gotta set your priorities you know........
It looks so much nicer in pictures. Chained to the bike rack you get the feeling it will give you tetanus. |

Here's my beloved French go getter. Motobecane Jubillee Sport with Columbus tubing, inexternal lugs. First road bike I've ever owned as I bought it to make it my beater bike. Have had her since 2005. Bought from an older gentleman right outside of Boston for $55. Had time trial handlebars, old computer, old raggity seat, and downtube shifters. Changed the TT bars for regular drop bars, got used seat from ebay, put old used rear rack, added fenders and rode it for a while with downtube shifters.
Wanted a singlespeed so stripped the frame of it's components and made it into a single with the existing wheels and rear cassette, which are the dreaded Heliomatic. The rear cassette gave in about 3 months ago while riding in downtown Durham as it stripped itself while going uphill. Did not ride it for while as I was riding a replacement aluminum Trek roadie for a little while. Missed her badly after about 3 months so had an idea to put the components back on instead this time with stem shifters & riser bar for comfort. Went to the Chapel Hill recyclery one Sunday and got my riser bar, replaced rear wheel with old Shimano wheel, and added the Suntour stem shifters. Bought new brake & shifter cables and went to work. Got it back to daily commuter condition and loving it like the first day i ever rode. So smooth and love how it looks now. Been using it not only as work/gym commuter, but also been using it for Saturday morning farmers market runs on the America Tobacco Trail with my fiance and her commuter (pics & story soon to come) and my dog tagging along with the Instep Bike trailer I just purchased. I need to replace the rear cassette as it has a couple bent cogs on the 5th cog but I am not using 5 and 6 until fixed. FYI: I have had many bikes in between (steel and aluminum) to see if this one can be replaced and still have not found one that satisfies me like this Motobecane. The steel just feels so smooth and I love the geometry of it. Thats exactly how I do it. I only bother to adjust the straps before and after winter for my boots. Just practice a bit with them, it's real easy. When I started riding 20 some years ago, you could still get cleats with slots in them so that your shoes would be somewhat locked to the pedals when you tightened the straps. Even then, you could get your shoes out of the pedals with a bit of practice. |
