The pack mule taking the morning coffee break...

2003 Trek 4900 with Panaracer Urban Max tires, Specialized bar ends, Planet Bike MTB fenders, Delta rack & panniers, Cateye blinky lights, Time Z Pedals. Tires are great for the road, are a bit challenging when taken off road (dirt road, single track, grass, etc); I'll replace these with some sort of 'cross tire. The Time pedals are awesome; easier to get out of than SPDs and almost as easy to get in.

After doing those things, I can wholeheartedly say that, "it doesn't suck." I was really afraid that the bike would suck when I started this commuting adventure, but it's really not bad at all.

I do about 150 miles/week on this bike. A 20-25mi RT commute accounts for most of those miles. I'm really looking forward to getting a proper bike, but the only immediate plans involve putting a Surly Instigator fork on the pack mule to make it a little better while I decide what to do about acquiring a proper commuter. And maybe a handlebar/stem replacement...and a seat...and a 12-27 cassette... ugh, well it'll make a really nice second bike one day.

my ride cooling off in the office. Trek 4300 switched to road tires, with some small panniers and a trunk bag. Fits everything I need for my work day.

My single speed commuter. A 70's something Bridgestone Kabuki. Rides like a dream!
I have since replaced the panniers with ones that accommodate my laptop, so no longer have the backpack to hassle with. ;)

Did some modifications to my newest ride.

Replaced the steel bars with Forte Aluminum Bars with Celtic Grips, added a front fender, a pump, bar-ends, a rack, a basket from the container store, a seatpost lock and wheel-locks front and rear.

I plan on adding a cyclometer as well.

Very sharp! Why don't you just get a real rack though?

Black_Gold 06-23-08 11:50 PM

mounting it would be fishy because wierdly, it doesnt have rear braze ons.

seems to be a lot of Sacramento folks here. I'm moving there in july, which is probably the dumbest time to move to there.

If ZZ Top ever commissioned a commuter bike, it would look like this one. Every touch is just right - all in balance. Stunningly cool.

HAHA.......you have no idea. If you look at some live cams today like the News 10 one Linky ,you can see the smoke that is blocking the sun today and we are still expecting mid 90s. Wildfires FTL. Oh, and it was 106 this last weekend. But during the mild temperatures you have the American River Bike Trail which is just absolutely amazing.

I love my 20km commute to work. I ride a Trek 1000 with fenders, a rack, and SpeedPlay lite action pedals. Love it. Follow the link to pics of my bike and snap en route.

My absolute is something like metallic maroon. I got a purple front tire to match the frame. ;)

that trail at the beginning of the album is awesome i am jealous i have to share the road on a 2 lane country road most of the way no bike path. Blind hills and curves. its could be dangerous at the right time. thankfully at night traffic is sparse.

Agree with you on the balance. I just think ZZtop would commision more of the Electra cruiser/xtracycle combo.

bkrownd 06-24-08 04:49 PM

ZZ Top would need granny gears.

Fuji S-12S bought at the police auction for $35. This is my main commuter for my 20 mile RT commute, and is my backup winter road bike. I've added fenders and a rear rack, changed the saddle, and have switched out the pedals for Speedplays. I need to submit a new pic/pics.

Typically, we'll get a cool week or two just to soften you up for the State Fair heat wave. Just repeat the City Motto: "But it's a dry heat!"

Hybridzilla changed places with my Trek 1200 as my primary commuter earlier this month when the roadie started having problems with the rear wheel.

Taken at about 35 MPH down a long hill (note the lack of spokes haha)

Here's mine (finally).

It's a Pointer Alu, and has a Shimano internal hub gearing system.

Picture's taken in the back yard, I know I should take out the weed... :( Got the pic taken right after fixing my rear tube.

FreddyV: Is Pointer a local brand?

Here are some photos of the new Jamis Aurora, taken along our local MUP which I use for commuting once in awhile.
