My dream of fascist utopia is over :(

Just like any big city we have our fair share of murders, robberies and theft.

The problem with the 'fascist' rule is that all moral sensibilities and social responsibility has been eroded away. The only way to cope with unreasonable laws is to play by one's own rules, and that rule is:

Just don't get caught.

In other words, in the eyes of Singaporeans, a hit-and-run is perfectly legal and alright, as long as you don't get caught. There's no social responsibility, no morality.

The police doesn't take any real action against bicycle theft and vandalism, and so it stays. In Singapore, if the law isn't enforced, it doesn't exist.

Like any other country in this region, the way the government markets itself internationally has little to do with the realities in the country. Singapore is clean and green only because of the sheer number of cleaners and gardeners they employ in the city centre.

I've been to Melbourne and was pretty amazed how they could keep the streets almost as clean as Singapore's, but with so little cleaners. The difference is, the people in Melbourne are socially responsible and therefore hardly litter or create a mess.

Mavic Open Pro wheels
12/25 Ultegra cassette
Shimano 105 shifters and FD
Deore RD
Nitto Noodle bars
Brooks B17
V-Brake w/travel agent for front brake and Canti for rear (had vbrake for both, but rack wouldn't fit)
Shimano Deore LX Trekking crankset. 26/36/46 with chainguard (love that feature).
Shimano campus pedals (love having clips on one side and platform on the other)
Vittoria Rand. Cross 700x28 tires.
Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. Requirement for PNW.

Only ridden it once so far but it rides great.

I want to know where to get these bars:

and these baskets!

^^ The baskets look like Wald folding baskets; I've seen some at my LBS and am nearly considering a set myself. Heavy, but handy.

Not completely sure on those bars, though. They look like dirt drops, but I could be wrong.

You can see that the brake housings are angled pretty sharply from the brake lever. Longer housing, or the noodle would improve the performance of the brakes. Take a look at some old school road bikes (pre-aerobrakes) and you will see that the housings have a nice arching path up from the brake levers and then down to the brakes. This allows the handlebars to turn without kinking the cables and also prevents sharp angles in the cable/housing (bad).

"So if I get longer brake cables won't it make them cables stick out farther?"

By installing longer housing, or adding the brake noodle, it will effectively shorten the brake cable. On the above picture you have extra brake cable, hence my original comment that if you are careful you can re-use the inner cable, so it will actually stick out less. I hope this makes some sort of sence. Good luck.

I see! I understand what you are saying now...the longer housing would effectively shorten the brake cable sticking out at the brakes...I will get that fixed. I am thinking of getting the tetkro r200 levers, they have hoods and have very good reviews on braking power. Thank you for the advice.

First let me say the commuting posting members have some nice rides...

Since were talking Kilo tt's.. here is mine all decked out. Sorry for the low quality photos.. I don't have a decent camera, I buy bicycle parts instead.

Recently added items are the Sunlite rack, Performance Transit trunk bag, and Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. Those were a challenge to install and align. There is almost no clearence on this bike for fenders. I had to cut the front fender forward of the brake since it wouldnt fit without rubbing. (as the other kilo tt owner did on this thread)

Thanks for the heads-up.

How do you guys like those Kilo TT's? I'm thinking about one myself.

The Origin8 Gary bar is exactly the same, and cheaper. I sold one on eBay recently. I bought it cuz it looked cool. Installed it, found it almost completely unrideable (for me, at least), and sold it for my cost. The WTB dirt drop bar would have been a better choice for me, I think. Or a randonneur bar.

I enjoy mine.. bought it as a complete bike, but have replaced every part except the headset. Not because things broke, just cause it its what I wanted. If your picky about your parts, I would suggest getting the frameset and build up from there.

But for the money, they are solid bikes. I prefer to ride my kilo more than my other bikes. It has a good feel to it.

The Gary won't work with bar end shifters, as the tubing is slightly too small. The "flat" portion of the handlebar is also narrower on the Gary. The Midge is worth the extra cost.

Hello all. I've just joined these forums and thought I would say hello. I'm 28 and in Decatur, GA, just outside of Atlanta. I commute downtown, around 70 miles a week. Been commuting since March. Here is my bike, originally a Trek 7.6fx, it has since gone through some modifications, because I am prone to tinkering. I added drop bars, Tiagra shifters and FD, egg-beater pedals, and some 23c Conti GP 4-season tires. Just had a tune up this past weekend and is running great.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Brian

Biking to work on my new 2009 Trek Valencia

1 Attachment(s)
Just purchased a new, dedicated bicycle for commuting to/from work. It's Trek's new "Valencia" commuter.

It has the following features:
  • Cro-Moly Steel Forks
  • Disc Brakes
  • 700c x 32c "Hardcase" Tires
  • 24-Speed Drivetrain (Shimano Deore)
  • Mounts for front and rear bicycle rack and kickstand

Here's a pic - feel free to email me with questions. I'll be posting "the first ten rides" as a comprehensive review of the bike on my cycling blog.

A broken fork on my commuter forced my new ebay find into commuter duty. Challenge Hurricane with Hydro rim brakes on the little 20" wheels.

I'm trying out a set of curvy bars for a change. Not sold on them yet, but worth a try!

Hi,

I mainly participate in the Folding Bike forum but I am a cycle commuter too. I decided to post my bike's photo, and get into the act:D

http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p.../QileDuo-1.jpg

This is my "Qile Duo" folding bike. It is a 5 speed, rear suspended folding bike. I purchased it through eBay over 7 months ago for $109.99 plus $34 shipping and handling. It has proven to be a very good bike in spite of the low price.

I am in Orlando, FL, and commute to and from work, 5 miles each way, and run all of my errands, including grocery shopping, and my laundry as well!

Of course like most cyclists, I am always tempted to buy the "next bike", even though as I stated this bike works really well. But that's our nature I guess:D

Regards,
Edward
