These little commuters are gonna rack up over 70 km this week... :)
http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute1.JPG When other parents were bring their kids and supplies to school in their cars we used the longbike... my daughter's white Raleigh Saffron is in the foreground while her sisters '73 Raleigh is on the right. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute2.JPG |
My Trek 7500 is probably the best all round bike I have ever built and it has been getting some upgrades... from 10 to 100 miles and beyond it does it all really well.
XTR cantis and Kool Stop pads... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute3.JPG New pedals to go with the new cranks... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute2.JPG Replaced the creaky adjustable stem with a 1.125 threaded to threadless adapter and an Easton stem... goodbye creak. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute5.JPG This bike glows in the daytime as well as night... taken with the flash in the shade. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute1.JPG No flash. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...09commute4.JPG |

One thing that did I realize as I was putting everything back together was that in moving to aero levers for the drop bars, I was loosing the brake cable barrel adjusters I had previously on my flat bar brake lever setup. This makes fine tuning the brakes a little trickier but in all for me the mod was well worth it. If you are considring doing someting similar here is how my mod was broken down: Cane Creek Drop V Brake levers: $45 Nitto Randonneur Bars: $47 Dura-Ace brake and shifter cables $30 Bontrager gel bar tape: $25 Dura-Ace 8 speed bar-end shifters: Free (gift from my brother) New (shorter+higher rise) Bontrager stem: $35 Labor: $0 / did the work myself. As other have said, it would probably have been cheaper to sell the bike and buy another. But I liked my Marin and sourcing the parts and doing the work was more than half the fun... I am just thinking that they might not be that bad on a drop bar. Especially if I also have some of those top mount levers (Tektro RL570) along with RL520s. I find shifting not as important as braking. Anyway, I am curious what others think. Thoughts? Thanks again. |

Here is my ride, an '08 Scott Sub 20. It's a work in progress, but not too bad for what I've got to work with while away from home.

Bill Court's Commuter Bike

'06 police model Trek evolving into a Dutch style commuter bicycle. I've added fenders front & rear, an extended front mud flap, 2 BikeBin.com rear panniers, a SKS German made chain guard, handle bar mounted rear view mirror along with a bicycle bell, and sitting on the rear Gorilla rack, a pair of Oakley Mountain Pilot gloves. Yes, if you look at the water bottle holder on the down tube is a Starbucks's Iced Venti Cafe Americano with cream.

This is my '07 Marin Larkspur.
Original parts: frame, headset, handlebars. What a fun project it was to upgrade the rest. I never imagined I'd be able to install a BB or an FD. I'm surprised how easily all the parts went together. It's now quite a nice ride. I'm grateful to all the info I got on these forums. It's that which gave me the courage to begin the upgrade project and do it all myself. |
i wear a messenger bag and travel light on my commute[30kms] so no panniers here...

The TT bars look real good, been thinking about putting a pair on my '88 Cannondale. Nice bike!

My latest snag :-) I will attempt first commute on it tomorrow, I have rode it about 50 miles already so I hope it holds up ok. Schwinn Varsity 1976 I believe at least according to the license I uncovered.

After months of layoff I'm finally a commuter again! And I finally got off my lazy arse and opened a photobucket account, so here's some bikes.
Old bike: http://i686.photobucket.com/albums/v...ke/bike003.jpg 2003 San Rafael w/ lots of extras: changed the cranks, cassette, chain, seatpost, tires; all the o.e. stuff was crap. Commuted all last year (Feb. to Oct.) on this one, but all miles this year had been recreational. Sold it on Craigslist a week ago. New bike as of a month ago: http://i686.photobucket.com/albums/v...ke/bike034.jpg 2009 Speciale Randonneur. Added the bag, rack (modified Axiom Streamliner Road), my spd's and changed the Ritchey 120mm Comp stem for a 90mm Pro to tighten up the cockpit a bit. The wife calls it my "Italian girlfriend" |
Hey Hal 8000, I just drooled on your Masi. It's beautiful and functional and I want it!!
|
Thanks! Don't worry, I've wiped lots of drool off of it already. I considered several similar "functional" bikes (including the LHT etc.) all in the same price range, but nothing stood up to the dead sexiness of the Masi. Photos will never do the paint justice.

Just finished a commuter build for my trips to and from the university. I'm still new to drop bars (and wiggle around like nothing else when trying to stand and mash.....) but it shouldn't be long until I get used to it, and the higher gearing/thinner tires/lower weight than my XC MTB I used to be using should be handy. Plus it uses cheaper parts

It is, I didn't butcher them I just took the posts off, so I can screw them in and add cantis if I ever want to in the future. It actually pissed me off a bit that they didn't include the cable hangars to use cantis, so I went with calipers.... only to find out that the holes for calipers were too small (rear hole in the fork was too small, rear holes in the frame had a threaded insert), but ended up drilling them out to make it work.
Not ideal i'd say, but I ended up with a working bike and I'm not concerned at all with the stability and power of my brakes. I'll see if it's worth moving for fenders, but this place is a lot drier than where I used to commute and involves no trail riding.... so I may not even bother. |

Like my STI's I wonder if they would slap them on instead of the bar ends? |

Mine's pretty spartan... I just carry what little stuff I need (lunch, change of clothes) in a backpack.
Disclaimer: Pic was taken before I adjusted the saddle height. I'm short but not THAT short! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2604/...70729d820b.jpg |
