I've been spending the morning digging back throught this thread, and getting really envious of all the great pictures, so I decided to do my nice old bikes justice and get some better pics of them on this thread. So here they are. The Motobecane and Peugeot have been splitting commuting duties pretty evenly. They both ride about the same, but the Pug is a little nicer for shifting with the index system at the rear. The mailbag pannier, trunk bag, Stella headlight and LED taillight I move to whichever bike I happen to be riding; the handlbag bags and rear racks stay put.

After riding now for a while on an old, cheap mountain bike, I knew I had to get a new bike eventually. I needed a 3sp IGH, chain guards, coaster brake. And I found it, a no-frills, low maintenance bike for my 14 miles round trip commute. Something not too expensive. A KHS Manhattan Green

^^^Looks sturdy and comfy, and just retro enough to be cool. I like the wheel lock; is it a Basta?

Thanks man, I like the wheel lock, too - (it's a Gorin) it's nice as an additional security, certainly not as an only lock. I may replace pedals for something with more grip at some point.

I did an 18-mile check ride of my commuter bike this evening. Had a few problems before the holidays- flat tire, broken spokes- and wanted to wring it out before riding it into work. I set up a little tripod and took a picture against the backdrop of the rail yard beside the Trinity River Trail. It was pitch black out when I took these; the orange light comes from the lights in the rail yard.

Mid 80s or something Norco Bush Pilot. Hi Tensile steel, and just spots of surface rust. Everything works beautifully (well, as to be expected from something low end...). Paid an obscene amount for it (too much), but I could re-coup the cost easily if I feel like selling it next fall for University season.

Problem is, damned thing is hilarious to ride! I can't wait until I can get fenders on the stupid thing, and I have the brown tail to proove it!

Anyways, winter gear? I live in Victoria, B.C. Canada. I haven't seen more than 3 snow flakes this year. All we've been getting is rain, and I'm too lazy to dress for it. I wear jeans, and a orange MEC hoodie, with a long-sleeve t-shirt under that. Always warm, just sometimes wet.

Well, I finally made my first non bmx racing bike. I stripped everything and cleaned/lubed. Bought new tires and inner tubes. Found the brakes, seat, peddles and shifter for 3$ each at a flea market brand new. I bought the handlebar tape and did it myself. It was pretty easy after a few you tube tutorials. This was also my first wiring job. It was easy as expected but very enjoyable too. Everything else is stock. I wish I knew what year this Schwinn was. It's old.

I actually haven't rode this yet because the streets in Minneapolis aren't the greatest for a noob commuter who still isn't used to the streets. (actually I just got here today, so I'm not comfortable just yet!)

2002 Giant Yukon

I bought this bike new in '02 and road it for recreation and for commuting to college. I decided to pull it out and give it a full on commuter conversion this winter so I can use it this spring/summer/fall to ride to work and ride for fitness. I replaced the knobbies with some 1.95" Kenda slicks, added some Avenir rear panniers, rear rack, and clip on fenders. I also added a nashbar front rack and frame bag. I'm a sucker for storage. I want this to replace my car for around town activities. I can't wait to use it.

Looks to be a Chicago made electroforged Schwinn... there is an online database for serial numbers that will pin down the bike's year of manufacture.

I just found this site a few days ago, so this is my first official post. It's not equipped to be a commuter just yet, but I couldn't wait to post a pic of my new Crosstrail!

There should be a serial number on the head tube that begins with two letters. The first letter is the month of manufacture; the second is the year. My Varsity begins with CJ which means March of 1973. Count up or down started from J = 1973 and you can figure out the year.
