Wish is had some braze on's, not even a water bottle I got the frame at a college bike auction back in '82. Collected parts here and there and tried to upgrade as better parts came along. Now, being a corporate stiff, I don't mix with the "used bike/unloved bike/stripped city bike" scene anymore. I just don't know where the old bikes go. Stores here don't sell used bikes. They just have new bikes starting at $1,000 and up.

Hubs are one piece Normandy high flange made in France both front and back. Rear derailure is Suntour VGT-Lux, front is the original Huret. Brakes are original Diacomp. Front rim was a cast off Avaya and rear is the only part I bought which is a Wobler 58 + box of spokes. Tank of a rim as I made it up 4x for touring. Can't convert to 700cm wheels so they stay 27"...remember those? Brooks sadle with a Campy post that came off a discarded bike that was run over by a car at college. Just put on cheap Shimano SPD mtb pedals which is the most money I have in the bike. It works. Based on input here I got a Cateye TL-ED1000 on the back and just picked up a Pyramid Power Beam for the front which is VERY visiable in blink mode. And some trimbrite tossed on for good measure. I just want to get back and forth for low cost, low risk. If I ever spend money on a nice bike it will be for weekend club rides like your Surly Long Haul Trucker. But having become addicted to other hobbies, I can see how it would be easty to have a quality commuter!

She works! And if someone steals her, I'd be bummed but not out much money.
Dude, that's a cool bike! she has character I often see guys commuting on bikes like that and can't help but smile and think "there goes a real commuter, I bet he's got some interesting war stories from his years on the road"

If I had that bike, I'd consider replacing the stem and handlebar if they're as old as the bike, especially if you're 220 pounds. Aluminum fatigues and I'd hate to see you get hurt If it's a 22.0mm French fork, though, it may be tricky. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/velos.html#stem

Full-size-drive forevar!! 11-30T cassette + 48-36-24 on my ancient XTR cranks. Yes, that crankarm was gloriously pearl-anodized once upon a time...

I just replaced the chain, cassette, big chainring, rear derailleur, and shift cables, which is why everything's so clean. I also added that Grunge Guard RD cover and slapped on my SRAM Nitecrawler seal for the rear-derailleur shift housing to keep water and dirt out. Once we've got snow and ice, I'll install my old IRC Blizzard studded tires.

Planned upgrade: get some Jandd Mini Mountain Panniers and install my old Blackburn LowRider front rack, so I don't have to carry weight on my back anymore.
Your lighting is awesome. I am jealous of the fog light on the fork! I may copy that, you mind?

thanks, they are maglites without the internals... i made my own lighting system using the "geek" homemade lighting system thread. one is a 20watt and the other is a 10watt. 2-5.5 hr runtime depending on what combo i use. (i'm proud of it)

Mostly cheap (but well-maintained) parts, and I'm too lazy to crack the lockring on the freewheel, or replace the crankset (too much cash for what it's worth). Hence, it's a cheap single-speed MTB. I'd be upset if it were gone, though.

Certainly do copy it if you see where it would be helpful for you The difficult part is finding amber lights, though. That is a Cateye TL-LD170-F and I know Peter White Cycles still lists them, if you're looking for one. Otherwise Planet Bike makes a front blinkie with amber LEDs too.

Very nice indeed

I assume you're using MR16 globes? if so, are they a good fit in the maglites?

I fitted some new SKS fenders in chrome finish, and my 36 spoke homebrew wheels with 28mm Conti Gatorskins back on.

Does it look ok?

Bikes: Too many.

Looks all business....and I'm feeling better now that I see the 36 spoke wheels

If I had a bike with an eyelet for lowriders up front I would sure put a rack on. I read on eBay from some guy who claims to have bought up all the early design front racks that Blackburn has discontinued making them. The concept of distributing the weight and down low around the centrafugal center seems like a good idea vs. loading up the rear. But alas, I don't have the ability to mount them.

eBay item 7203303588. Too bad shipping for you would be more than the item. How is the summer going!

Of the website where a picture is hosted goes down, or the person removes the picture, or the address of the picture changes, you're going to be missing the picture! Happens fairly often in a thread as old as this one. Most of the newer ones are here, but it is kind of sad that I can't see a lot of the older photos .

Here's mine. I use it to go to work 13 miles. I'm going to put some fenders on it as soon as I research what type would work best. Any ideas?

I was playing around taking pics in the dark tonight. Do those Cateye LD1000s (on the saddlebag) put out some light or what?

That's not why they're missing. Joe is having problems with the new server and he removed all the attachments, and is not sure he can restore them.

Bummer.

Yeah, I've noticed that they can light up a nice spot on the wall from a few feet away. I took the belt clip that it came with and clipped it to the sizing strap on the back of my helmet (Giro), everything is quick and easy that way.

Repost since my commuter pic went MIA with the new server problems.

Scattante XRL frame set with-

Ultegra brifters, brakes, BB, dbl front and 9spd rear DR's, 12-25 cassette
Weyless Team CF 175mm double cranksent
Dean Ti seatpost
Shimano PD540 SPD SL pedals
Ritchey wheels
Bontrager tires
3t HB's
Supergo 20W headlight, HB tape
White blinky next to HL
Performance stem, clamp on rack, trunk bag
Performance Forte SLX Saddle
Sigma Sport computer
CD cages
3 rear blinkies on seatpost, bag, helmet

A lot of this stuff was cannibalized off of my "old" commuter- a Cannondale 2.8 frame build which my wife had named the "Banana bike". This new one I call the "silver bullet" .

Hey Chip. Is that a Busch & Muller 4D Toplight in the center? Man, I thought those were the bomb but the Cateyes are bright as hell!
