This is my do-everything bike, 2001 Giant Boulder, and commuting is part of its duties. :)

I've used it a lot between 2002-2004 but I can't find any pictures of it sporting Kenda Kinetics 2.6 tires and full fenders. :( Soon enough the fenders will go back on and a Surly Open Bar handlebar is on the way.

That's a good looking bike, 7 or 8 speed?

Thank you !

It's a 7 speed. It came with a 7spd freewheel, then I bought a Kuwahara which had a 7spd LX hub so I rebuilt the wheel with it. :)

Bad cell phone picture of my 2007 Gary Fisher Wingra. I added the rack and bag, and I also swapped the stock handlbar for one with some rise to it, and it made a huge difference in comfort.

This is my Giant Escape 2 Hybrid when she was brand spankin' new.

I have since added, kevlar tires, kool stop brakes, and MKS Lambda platform pedals.

Also I destroyed my cartridge in less than 2000 miles, and have had the chain replaced.

My daily commuter so far. 2010 Specialized Rockhopper Comp with Topeak Explorer rack, Topeak DPX bag with panniers, Cygolite 180 headlight, & Serfas Drifter tires. Love this setup!!! Its my go anywhere do anything bike. Planning to commute in the snow this year on it. Got some Innova Ice Huskies to run this season to try it out.

^^ Nice !!! Are you thinking of going rigid at some point if the suspension fork doesn't like winter ?

Thanks! I doubt I will change the fork. I'm hoping I don't have any issues. I know the cold temps will affect the oil in the fork but as long as it doesn't do damage I'm fine with that. If you have ever been to Spokane, WA you'll know why a suspension fork is a must have piece of equipment for a lot of commuters here. Some of the worst roads in the country. I don't know how the road bikers do it. LOL

Awesome rig, I am a sucker for ss/fixie conversions, especially on such a great frame.

ps that is a big ring up front, it must be nice and flat where that is getting ridden

It has a 20 tooth cog in the rear so the big gearing is a bit of an illusion... makes for a smooth running 70 gear inches which is good for stop and go riding and leaves you some grace for climbs and headwinds.

My SOMA Saga with its new Tiagra (24/39/50) crankset. I'll be swapping the canti brakes and levers for mini-v's and RL520s.

That looks like a great commuter. I'm very interested to see how that new crank set up works out for you. I'm running the Tiagra 50/34 but we've got some serious climbs around here and I'd love a lower gear time to time. What is the cassette you are running? Are you getting any chain clearance or rub issues? I ride a Giant Defy 2.
Thanks in advance.

Previous cranks were 26/36/46 Sugino with an 11-32 cassette. I have a 34/46 double on my cross/adventure bike, and that works well with an 11-32 cassette. Because the SOMA is so much heavier (add another 10-12 pounds with the panniers), I need something smaller than the double's 34/32 low. I was running a 29/44 double, but the chainline and q-factor were a bit wonky.

The 24/39/50 Tiagra crank works really well with an 11-32, and would probably work even better with an 11-28 for unloaded riding or on a lighter bike (mine weighs 31-32 pounds w/o bags). I never even bothered with the stock 30t granny ring, BTW. I had a steel 24t chainring, and installed it before mounting the cranks. That way, if I find that the 11-32 cassette is overkill, I can drop down to an 11-28 and still have a sub-1:1 low gear.

BTW, all my bikes are nine speeds, and are equipped with bar-end shifters. On the commuter, I can use 8 of the 9 cogs with no rub or serious deflection.

Here is my newest commuter. I've been riding it all summer. It's quite pieced together.
The frame is a mid-1990s Novara Randonee. It's a tiny one, 13.5" and takes 26" wheels. Too bad they don't make these frames any more. I have another one of these frames. I got it several years ago at an REI garage sale, NOS for $15. It's built up as a flat bar commuter and has been great. I like it so much that I got this gold one on ebay earlier this year. Thought it would be fun to build it as a drop bar commuter.

I had been wanting to get a Surly CC, but the 42cm is still a bit too big for me. So this is my solution.

The frame came with a matching fork but I wanted a LHT fork (got it used). The wheels are the Vuelta Zerolites from gNashbar (got 'em on a good sale). I had the R600 brifters and the Sugino 165 cranks. Brakes and tires from an LHT. Plan to get it powdercoated at some time. Maybe the same goldish color.

This bike rides soooo nice. It's fun to ride to work and all over town.

Finished my 3speed yet again, this time I'm done. I should be able to get at least a few rides out of it before the weather gets here, I had never wrapped non drop bars so I'm not too happy with the job I did but it works and doesn't look too bad.

Fizzaly, that bike looks dope as hell! Nice work, I like the rude boy head badge. Is that a 3 speed fixed hub? I don't see a coaster arm.

Fizzaly 09-27-11 05:23 PM

3speed free hub that's why I gots the front brake.

Here's mine. It's served me well for nearly a month now. It's heavy. Crazy heavy, but so far pretty comfy and dependable. Will be replacing the bar and stem later this week, if the LBS got the parts in. The completely sideswept bars are forcing me to be a bit too upright, and I don't have much control with them. I also feel a bit cramped. So, I'll post a new pic after...

Nice bike and a great shot... set up my Moulden so that I could remove the rack and fenders in < 5 minutes and took the scenic route home on Friday.

This is my second baby! I picked it up on CraigsList for $115 two weeks ago; all the components were in great shape and all it needed was a little cleaning. I added some fenders and now am looking for a rack and some panniers. I'll be working on going bike-heavy in the next month and preparing for winter riding as well.
