My 4th grade son's commuter bike, one of three that he uses (hybrid, mtn, bmx).
This one is truly a freaky frankenbike. Parts from about 8 different machines.
Hand trued/tensioned wheels, 24" touring tires, touring cranks and rings, new grips, shifters v-brakes, 24" rack, recharge lights, etc.
Still need to change to a set back seat post and different stem and bars for better fit/look.
Started as a 1993 Novara Scrambler that I bought lightly used for my youngest brother, many moons ago.
Rebuilt for my boy's 10th birthday in August.

Well that is remarkably well-executed for a Frankenbike! My vote for most beautiful crankset ever seen on a child's bike!

I have a 4th-grader myself, he'd be very envious of this rig.

And to have a son that young who's already a 'bike commuter'! Way to raise 'em right!

Thank you. He is one amazing son.
He also has a very nice commute to elementary school. About 4.5 miles with a very friendly, albeit hilly, bike route in our neighborhood, then bike lanes, to a dedicated 2 way cycle track that runs directly to his school.
His school is also setting up bike trains to/from to encourage new/timid riders to commute to elementary school.
We are grateful for his school, the cycle facilities, and the bike culture at large, here in austin.

Thx for the interest, your son's school/cycle situation sounds awesome.

Yes, lots of recreational riding in the whole family, but unfortunately, cycle-commuting to school is not in the cards for us right now. Last week we had a special family event where we dropped off the kids at school in the morning with their bikes, and then met them on bikes after school to all ride home together, but it wouldn't work regularly. Our school is a little over 7 mi away, maybe 2-3mi of it is segregated bikeway, which is nice, but the rest is bike lanes on arterial suburban roads, with not much opportunity to divert to residential side streets. And we have three; the 4th grader is in the middle; the youngest would not be able to make the uphill trek to school in less than probably 90 min; the older two would be more like 45-60min.

So since at least one needs driving, it makes the most sense to drive them all. However, I'm hoping that with cross-country practice starting after school, the two oldest may get dropped off with their bikes in the morning a few days a week, and ride home after practice (no parent, but the two of them together). As an incentive to help make them eager to ride on tired legs, I can promise to outfit their bikes with racks & bags so they don't have to ride hot & topheavy with backpacks! If I ever do, I'll be sure to come back and post pics of their commuterized bikes! But until then, this is the 4th grader's bike, and I don't think I have any pictures of the oldest's bike, but it's a Raleigh Technium PRE just like this.

That's such a beautiful bike! How long have you had it, and what do you think of it? Have you changed it up a lot-- I thought I remembered a picture of yours with upright bars.

I got it March 2013, I think. Came with 44cm Noodle drop bars on it. I think it was 22 lbs. complete stock build.
I tried it with Noodle bars, Moustache bars, and Albatross bars. All standard Rivendell bar builds for their bikes.

Now I have 41cm Noodle drops on it, and so far, so good. No pain. Very comfortable. I think I will keep it this way now as long as everything continues to be fine.
It is a very cushy, soft ride and descends like a rock. Very stable and predictable handling.
I like the 650b wheels and that the frame can handle 42mm wide tires.
Wide tires at lower pressures roll great over rough roadways. Stock tires are the massive puncture protected Schwalbe Marathons.

I just finished a metric century on it and I felt great afterwards. So happy to finally be comfortable on it. Took a while for me to dial in my fit.
The Lord willing, I will be fine on it from here on out.

Still nice, fast manuevarable ride for dense areas.
And easy to get on the trains, bus racks, etc.

Very manoeuvrable and easy to getup to speed. Unfortunately I can't take it on the buses here (UK). I am a bus driver, and our company (and I think most others in the UK if not all) only allow folded bikes on board as we have no dedicated cycle racks.

The trains are a different matter, but even they have changed. When I travelled to college (16 years ago :O), we had one big guards van (bit like a box car) which would hold about 30 bikes in their normal position. Now the trains in my area only have five dedicated cycle racks and the bike has to be hung in them. I am not sure about the other services in the country

Here you go. My main ride these days is an 86 Schwinn Tempo, 63cm. I've been riding this for about a 6 months. It has been my favorite by far. I try to ride at least three days a week. Commute is just under 19 miles round trip. I've been swapping the same parts from one frame to another for the last few years. I only upgrade when it's "cheap enough" to do so. Drivetrain is a mix of 105 and 2200. Rear rack is an Axiom Streamliner. Bags are Sunlite. Fenders are Planet Bike. The tires are Serfas Seca Survivors 700x25. These tires have been very impressive.
