Finally finish up (for now) the back up/winter commuter last night and it's already the primary, it's time to tear down the kuwie and replace the drivetrain. Upon some routine maintenance I noticed the kuwies cassette had three gears worn to a very sharp point, which instantly reminded me that it's been on the big for two years now. I probably managed to get around 8ish thousand mikes out of it (roughly 2 1/2 chains) which is the longest so far, I really love the cheaper all steel cassettes they wear slowly. Broke the old trek frame out from storage and built her up, this is gonna be its form for probably the winter as I'm also currently rebuilding my MTB and can't afford three new builds at once . I may even dredge up the original kuwie build thread to do some interesting look back on all its forms.

Threw some nashbar trekking bars on my Kona Commuter.



And yes, I realize the stem doesn't match the bike at all and looks terrible, but it's the only stem I had around with the right sized clamp on it. I'll order a new one soon. And yes the bar tape is awful, but didn't have enough to cover the whole bar so I will get some more. I was just excited to get them on that I rushed through it with mis matched parts and I'm glad I did because these bars are so much more comfortable than the risers I used to have on the Kona.

It's been a while since I uploaded my commuter. The top two are the full set up in the winter time when I take more stuff to work. The bare pic is summer riding when I can just ride to work in shorts. Oh yea, the front rack always comes in handy as well. I have a cargo net for random items or if I decide to grab something from the store, on it goes.

My humble commuter... Doesn't look like much but she's a smooth, fast, comfy ride. Does about 600-700 km a month across gravel, pavement, hills and the occasional pothole...

They are both Revelate bags. The one on the top tube is a half frame bag called a Tangle, the small one on top is called a Gas Tank.

Cool another Felt commuter! I rigged up my Z85 with a rear rack and trunk bag, using insulated P clamps and a Problem Solvers seat post clamp with rack mounts. Works awesome.

No, that is on the other side of the parking lot at my building. Just looked scenic. I do get to commute most of my 30 mi RT on the prairie paths though, through some woods etc. See lots of deer, coyote, birds of prey, egrets, herons, etc. I used to do a lot of wildlife photography to get out in the woods, now that is replaced by biking (which is a cheaper and healthier pastime). Dite where I work also has gravel roads and other paths I can tool along through restored prairie.

I had to replace the h'bars (bent), fenders (cracked), mirror (cracked), and wheels (duh). I also upgraded the shifters, cassette, and chain while I was at it, since this was all on Mr. I-can't-be-bothered-to-watch-where-I'm-going's dime(s). The only damage that I didn't bother with was the bend in the rear rack, right there at the tail end of it. Rack still works great, and I never use that bit of it, so whatevs. Might try and bend it back someday, if it ever starts to bug me.


The new: Salsa Cowbell 3 h'bars, Dimension ?? stem, Shimano 105 2x10 brifters, Velo-Orange fenders (powder coated black), Velocity Chukker rims (powder coated yellow) laced to Shimano XT hubs, Raceface wide/narrow chainring (was having a problem with chain derailment since I switched to 10 speeds in the back, but not anymore!), Woho frame bag, Busch & Müller 901/3 mirror, SRAM 10sp cassette, Wipperman Connex 10sp chain (in black, natch).


The old: Surly Straggler frame and fork, Crank Bros Iodine headset, Nashbar compact road crank and Isis BB, Salsa chainguard, TRP Spyre disc brakes (unhappy with Avid's BB7 roads? try these and you'll never look back), Fizik ?? saddle, Tubus ?? rack, Easton ?? seatpost (spray painted black, 'cuz who powder coats a seatpost?), Wellgo ?? platform pedals, Knog Blinder Road 2 headlight, Cygolight Hotshot taillight, Monkeylectric Mini Monkey wheel light. Currently wearing winter tires (yay, first snow!): Nokian Hakkapeliita w240s, 700x40c. Summer tires (not pictured): Schwalbe Marathons, 700x38c.

Wow, that looks painful! The frame and fork weren't damaged at all? That's impressive.

Dude was driving a car, not a truck, and he slammed on his brakes right before he t-boned me, so his bumper hit the bike below the frame and fork. Wheels were toast, both disc rotors were bent, and the h'bars and rack bent when they landed on either the car's hood or on the ground, but there wasn't even a scratch on the fork, frame, or cranks. Front fender cracked at the fork crown bracket, mirror cracked, and bar tape got torn, and that was all of the damage to the bike. I walked away with a sprained wrist, a few bruises, and an increased sense of vigilance when crossing intersections.

Seriously loving my new commuter: early 90's Hard Rock scored on Craigslist with nice Araya wheels, just needed some TLC. Added 1.4" Michelin Wild Run'r slicks, Cascadia ATB fenders, Blackburn TRX-1 rack, and the Thule panniers mentioned earlier on here for such a steal of a deal -- they're indeed as great as everyone has already said.
