Here's one my favorite commuter bikes for a variety of terrain on dirt, gravel roads, mud and pavement.

That's a mad max bike, baby! Mount some guns on the handlebars (and another on the rear rack, with a crazy 8 year-old to shoot it), and you're ready for the global supercollapse!

Quick stop on Fridays commute the longer long way home, along the Campion trail in Irving. |
Here is my new commuter/touring bike I just built up. I am so happy with how this bike turned out, This has been my dream build for the last few years and a customer came in with this bike in perfect condition asking to get rid of it. use to have a flatbar and be a hybrid 7speed. it is now a touring/commuter with a full sunrace 9 speed drivetrain a few bontrager parts here and there, and also some brand new Conti Tour ride tires . I LOVE IT!!!!!

ah, the crotch view. very nice.

Whoa that camera has some serious lens distortion in pic3, or your chain really needs to be lubed!
How's the sunrace shift for you? When you say 'full' how much did it cost and how many components were included? RD obviously, but FD? Shifters? Crank? |

I stopped on my way home from work yesterday to handle a phone call. Took these photos before I continued riding home.

This is one of my wife’s two commuter bikes. I just finished getting this one back up and running. It’s a 1993 Trek Multitrack 730, and I know the year because it was the first new bike she ever bought herself; she got it while she was in medical school. It was pretty trashed, in a good way. I’ve never seen a cassette or chainrings so worn out! I replaced a lot of the old parts with cheap but good ebay parts: an Alivio rear derailleur, a cheap Sugino crankset I found for $30, cheap v-brakes, etc. She sometimes gets wrist pain when she bikes for a while, so I got a huge stem to get the bars up, and used moustache bars (upside down) for multiple hand positions. It has a 7-speed cassette and an 8-speed shifter, which you can make work via some creative cable routing (thanks Sheldon Brown!). The shifting is right on. I really like the rack: it’s a steel Wald. Because of the 700C wheels and tiny frame I had to use a makeshift extender to get it level. A brand new 22-year-old bike! |
Classy. The moustaches, gum tires, and rack all look cool. And I'm a big fan of fluted seatposts.

After trying numerous different bikes (buying, tinkering and selling) I've finally found MY perfect commuter.
Fast enough, perfect gear ratio and bomb proof. 2009 Marin Hamilton.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=476285 |

Do you ride with the saddle that low?

I don't see any problems with that seat height, as long as you're comfy it's all good!

Yes, it's a large 29er and at 5'8" my legs are pretty stretched. Why...does it look weird?
|
Unless he/she has a proportionally longer torso than legs. Then it could be just the right size. Especially if they like riding more upright.

Thanks, RubeRad! I kept everything is cheap as possible, because I know the nostalgia bit isn't that big a deal to her. I'm like, "look, it's your first bike!" And she's like, "yeah, but I have a new bike now." I don't know what I like so much about that rack, but I love it-- I'm going to get that one again.
