Um, anyway, on the ordering thing...I don't really know, since I've never owned a Thorn; it was just an observation I noticed. You'd be better off asking the guy who's actually got a Thorn (I forgot the poster's name, but he lives in San Diego, and his pictures of his Thorn are posted up in this thread a few pages back).

Well its time to post my bike. I've only had it for two weeks and I've just beginning to get it how I want. This is my second bike so I got something that will spend its entire life as the 'commuter'

I like the nexus hub its good, but I think I'm gonna gear it up a bit atm its running a 42x19. But I'm still sensing the bike out. Mods done so far: B17 saddle, koolstop thinline pads, fenders, pedals (giant platforms which are surprisingly good. I've got a narrower set of bars that I am contemplating on putting on, when I have a bit of free time.

Thanks. Agreed on the cables. At this point that's beyond my ability (I think?) and I'll be heading to the bike shop this weekend to get them shortened.

For as long as I have been lurking about these forums, I haven't posted my ride. Here are some pics. Basically the thing is like the SUVs of bikes it doesn't go off road as much as I thought it would when I got it 9 years ago. Dreams of mountain biking have been met with the reality of office commuting.

It has a hub dynamo so it could be considered the hybrid SUV equivalent. That is what you see lighting up my route and is the origin of my avatar. I've got more than two years on the Schwalbe Marathons and no flats. But the roads are surprisingly clean here.

Cool! What do you fold it for and what does it fit into for you? Can you take it on the bus or a train without a bag for example?

Well, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) who runs all the trains and busses in Chicago proper say I can take the bike on the bus or train anytime because it folds. Most of the busses in the city have bike racks built on the front of them so that's an option too.

Now the METRA (suburban commuter train into the city) says I can take it on so long as its in a bag.

I got a folder mainly for security reasons. I've lost enough bikes to theft so I wanted to get something I can bring into the office with me (and the house too). The rent-a-cops at my building would never let me in with a bike, but folding it and putting it in the bag shuts them up. Technically I shouldn't need a bag, but I have one as a courtesy to the property.

Though it has a full size 26" wheel, once folded it fits nicely in my car. So I can go out to one of the hundreds of parks and trails in and around Chicago with out having to set up some kind of rack on my car.

P.S. I really like your bike, nice paint job and great lines. How do those handle bars work out for you? I'm thinking about changing mine to something like that. because sometimes my fingers get numb when I ride and I have to change my grip to get feeling back in my pinkie and ring fingers.

Thanks, the flat handle bars are ok for me, I ride with some well padded gloves though... However the grips are wearing out.

No! Undo the nuts on the brake calipers, to release the cables. Slide the cables out of the housings. Measure the cable housings to you know how much to remove. For preference, cut them down to size with a dremel or other grinder, but if neccesary, side cutters will do. If you use side cutters, grab a pair of needle-nose pliers, and make sure that the end where you cut is clear (the spiral metal may have bent across it, but can be bent back). Grease the cable, slide it back through the housing, refit at the brake end. Most things on a bike are easy, and this is one of the easiest. Try it. Worst case scenario, you have to pay the LBS $10 or so to fit a new set of cables. Much more likely, you learn a new skill, and save yourself money.

This is my first bike with STI shifters. I love STI shifting the rear derailleur but on the front derailleur it's starting to annoy me. I may go to a bar end shifter for the front derailleur.

It's the bike I should have bought....a few months ago I was still against drop bars and now I realize I should have given them a chance

I think I will - now that I've started fixing other things up myself (put on new fenders and adjusted the internal hub).

I'm getting the frame ready for the powder coating shop (Olympic in Santa Anita, CA - far way from me but *very* reasonable and a great job too). Hmm. Frack it, do it all.

Still need a set of nice green Vittoria Paves', and a new rack (my old one doesn't fit :(). This project really got me thinking about my assumptions and the build possibilities when cheap, quality color is available. Sure wish you could powder coat carbon.

Custom ANT Club Racer

Drivetrain is mixed Shimano Ultegra and Deore XT.
Wheels are hand-built 36 spoke 700C on Mavic Open Sports with an ultegra hub on the back and Schmidt dynamo up front.
Fenders are full-size Honjos, with tail-light mounted on the rear fender.
Lighting system is a pair of E6's mounted on a custom built lighting bracket
Nitto handlebars, bar end shifters, technomic stem, and Chris King headset for the cockpit.

When I commute, the rack supports a pair of 46L MEC Serratus Aqua-Not panniers.

I just started commuting to work on it 2 weeks ago, I had to replace the BB last weekend after I put 150 miles on it, other then that it has been a great bike for me. Not much to look at but it works for me!

The only plans I have for changing this bike is that I want to go to some slicks and some fenders possibly. I am waiting for the old tires to wear out before I do that thought so I dont have an extra set of tires just laying around. (Also I dont know what width tires I want for it yet either)

This bike is the cat's pajamas...very nice build!! The only thing I would change would be the saddle. Wouldn't happen to be a 58cm, would it? (Hope you didn't mind me posting a few of my favorite pics from your link.) One more question. Who designed/fabricated your custom front light rack?
