This is going be my winter commuter/trainer: Fixified 1989 Trek 660. I didn't have time to get the fenders set up so hopefully tonight's rain will hold off until I get home.

Is that the capitol in the background?

It is indeed. I took this shot at Tootsie's frozen yogurt stand. When the Legislature's in session, the place is lousy with Members and staff. This week, not so much.

She did when she was just a young pup, but she grew out of it quickly.
Your right about making a great companion. She never leaves my side and always helps out. I was raking the leaves today and of course she was right there playing in the piles of leaves!

I built this up in stages over the last few years. It's a mid-80s Trek 310 with 7-speed Shimano Nexus hub. Upgraded the wheels about ten years ago with Mavic MA-40s which have been fantastic - strong and true. Still experimenting with the positions of everything on the moustache bars, so I haven't taped them yet.

More of an obstacle to my commuting though, is a nasty intestinal hemorrhage that seems to pop up the day after I ride or do anything else strenuous. Nearly killed me a year ago last week. That keeps me from actually commuting much at all, but I'm dang tired of just looking at my bike hanging in the garage and figured even if I can't get it out on the road where I can appreciate it, I'll get it out on the web where other like-minded folks can. Riding is my inspiration for getting my guts fixed and my body back up to speed. Some day soon I'll be out all the time.

My recently adopted commuter. A.K.A. Just about the best $100 I've ever spent.

1999 Diamondback Sorrento SE

Offroad it's usually missing the lights, handlebar bag, and will have knobby tires.

Tires: SlickCity ST by Forte
Seat: Bell (original was torn up)
Rack: Schwinn
Das Blinkenlights: Bell (Looking at a Blackburn X3 for up front)
Handlebar Bag: Bell
Pump: Blackburn MtnAIR

Inside the bag:
* Gerber Evolution multi-tool
* Screwdriver with bits for every fastener on my bike
* Spare tube
* Master Python cable lock
* Lunch

On the rack:
Depends on what I need to take with me that day, but either a laptop bag or duffle bag.

Also, a really long lash strap wrapped around the support, in case I need to attach something big, or strap a milk crate to the back for carrying stuff.

It's sort of hard to capture with a cell phone camera, but this is about as clean as my bike will be until I don't know June-ish I think.

My last frame was a cheap aluminum poc, weld broke at the bottom bracket after 2 yrs commuting. This is what I came up with when I thought about what the ultimate commuting bike would be.
Surly 1x1 frame
Shimano nexus 7 hub (to see if I liked internal gears)
nashbar trekking bars w/reflective cork bartape
xtracyle attachment -the best thing i have bought for commuting/grocery shopping-going on 3 yrs old
spiderflex seat- weird but comfy
hokey spokes on front wheel, to get peoples attention when it's dark.
eno cranks 38t with a 16t cog in back
extended my fenders to reduce water/salt spray

Sorry garth, but that is just a little too conventional looking.

Seriously
Don't they sell something like that in Walmart?

:p

deputyjones 11-15-06 01:49 AM

They sell a folding tricycle.

However, I think garth's bike is pretty cool and quite handy for the car free types.

Flimflam 11-15-06 07:53 PM

Well I finally took pictures of my bike tonight, and noticed some interesting damage, too...

http://flimflam.homelinux.org/images/bike/IM006108.JPG
Crappy dark shot, sorry:
http://flimflam.homelinux.org/images/bike/IM006109.JPG
Excuse the cat, this is with the visible damage to the left bar-end that I did with my wrist in August. The bar part swivels around/is loose, so I can't crank on it much (though I do use the corner of the bracket to switch up my hand position) - I need some loctite for it, is all.
http://flimflam.homelinux.org/images/bike/IM006110.JPG

And the damage I found:
http://flimflam.homelinux.org/images/bike/IM006114.JPG

Firstly, there's a screw missing (which is what caught my eye), but on closer inspection, the next eyelet is sheared off the inner part (forgive me for not knowing the names of the parts) - I do want to replace/switch up my gearing to get some taller gears, but don't know exactly what I'm going to do about this yet. This certainly explains the creaking I've been hearing just the past couple of days.

Anyway, that's my el cheapo ride.. :) It gets me from A to B, I love it.

unkchunk 11-16-06 01:18 AM

Garth, is there any way you can put up a photo of that front wheel thing in the dark? I'm curious how it shows up.
