Yeah when it gets cold plastic gets real brittle. Also water tends to freeze, witch caused me to fall/crash!

And i use "caterpillar" steal toes for the cold, and there a size too big so i can fit more socks, so i don't freeze. So i guess i clipped it with the toe of the boot during the slip.

All the "coldness's" fault!

And the frame is a bit short

Pics of my backup. Parked in front of the Central Library in downtown KC, next to the Trek 820 belonging to a guy who I see commuting every day (he works there at the library, no clue how far in he rides, he isn't too talkative, I haven't ever asked him where he rides in from)

Bought it used for $80 on craigslist last week. It's a 1998, and it had less than a mile on it when I got it. I swapped on the 8-speed wheels from my Sorrento to see how she rides on the slicks. Works like a champ.

My commuter for now. It's a 1982/1983 Schwinn Super Sport SP. Bought the bike for $80 off Craigslist earlier this year - since then I've put about that amount again into parts. I'm personally fond of that understated-but-not-out-of-date look.

That Schwinn is a classic.

Hey, caloso, remember me? Long time no post!! Still commuting, though!! Still doing the San Jose thing. Zillions of miles on various commuter bikes.

I'll check in more formally soon. I just recall many of your posts in the past. Glad to see you're still at it.

Andy

Running late this morning but still got to work before almost everyone else. Thank goodness for cool weather and sweaters. I didn't need to cool off at all and didn't need to worry about a pressed shirt, just threw on the wool sweater and got straight to work.

deputyjones 11-20-06 12:27 PM

Here's how my commuter is shaping up. Next comes fenders and my MR16/SLA based geeky light system.

Here is my commuter for this year. I tried to keep it simple and fast. My commute is short, so pretty much any handlebar would work, but this one is pretty simple.

After 3 months of planning, dreaming, window shopping, etc. I finally have a bike - and I didn't even have to buy it. A good friend of mine in the Marine reserves is deploying next month - and he offered me a long-term loan on his MTB, which will now become my primary means of transport.
Here it is - with red Michelin Hot S tires...
It's a Trek 8000 -

Future Plans:
Fenders, Rear Rack w/ Waterproof Panniers, Front and Real Lights, Slick Tires, Platform Pedals, Rigid Fork...

wild animals 11-24-06 08:44 PM

i love red tires. i wish there were more of them around!

This is my daily commuter, though most of the other bikes on this thread put it to shame:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...d568312464.jpg

It's a crummy road bike that I converted to a fixie when I got hit by a car and needed a new rear wheel.

donnamb 11-25-06 02:40 AM

I like it. It has character.

Here's mine!!!

I use it for commuting 8 miles (one way) to work 2-3 times a week. I would ride to work more often if it wasn't for my snooze button.

Here's my latest commuter iteration - the Kogswell I posted a couple of months ago has been tweaked and moderately reconfigured with a custom cargo rack, new lighting, and other tweaks.

Well if my new job let me commute, and/or had somewhere for me to keep it, this would be my commuter...posted before but axed during the server troubles. 199? Raleigh M50. All tuned up, cleaned up and rides like a dream, for a tank. I got it for $37 off of eBay. Gotta pick up some fenders and lights and ditch the toe clips

Are those platform pedals sans toe clips and straps? You must have mad skillz to ride a fixie w/ platforms. Or do you actually use the front brake?

caloso 11-27-06 10:28 AM

FlippingHades: That whole setup is just amazing. Are those lights dynamo-powered?

Thanks! Yes, it's a Schmidt dynamo hub, and the lights are Schmidt-modified Lumotecs. You can see the wiring going down the right front leg of the rack in the second photo.

caloso 11-27-06 12:21 PM

Oh, yeah. I see it now. You must look like the Muni coming down a darkened street.

johnnycoke 11-28-06 04:38 AM

I just got my new 2007 Jamis Aurora. I'm holding out till after christmas for clipless pedals and a brooks.

I'd say your Raleigh must be a 1994 or somewhere pretty near. I own a 1994 GT that has exactly the same components as yours. It still serves me well with 18 gears, cantilever brakes, rigid fork, single walled rims and long headtube like yours.

Oh, and yeah, ditch the toeclips...

Ricardo
