Mileage Goals for 2009
Well we closed 2008 with a thread on how far we traveled for that year. So we start 2009 with the thread for prognostication on how far we plan to go.
Last year I went 2,133.05 miles and for this year my goal is to double that and go 4,266.1 or better.

Well I would set a goal in terms of numbers but i won't do that. I just want to ride to work every day and ride as much as possible. Especcially with friends and family. I also want to get back up to Downieville on a Santa Cruz.

Bikes: I've lost count.
I would like to ride more than last year. I want to do around 6,500km for 2009.

4000 miles, since I missed it by only 112 miles this year.
My big goal isn't the yearly total, it's the one day total. In 2009 I'm riding a 400km brevet.

On the 2008 thread I posted my 2009 goals, so I guess I'll do it again. Would like to add about 1-200 miles of swimming, but that remains to be seen. I live rural, have a 40 mi per day commute and can ride past the UAW gym where the pool usage is free. The only real problem is time and the fact that the route I have to take has a stretch of about 5 miles of straight 45 mph high traffic road w/no and I mean NO shoulder...it's the only artery between two other main routes in this area. I'm a 20+ year cycle-commuter and this stretch of road makes ME uneasy.
There ARE plans afoot to widen it, but it'll be at least 2 years before that project is even started.
So, ok over 8000 bike/ under 4000 truck and over 100 pool miles. There, that's doable.

I don't want to set an exact number, but I want to ride every day, 365 days in 2009. I figure if I can and do manage to do that, I'll rack up more than last year for sure (600). Hopefully more than 2000

2008 I hit 2305 and for 2009 I would like to do 3500. Last year was the first time keeping track and I was surprised at how that helped get me out doing some shorter rides on cold and bad weather days, where I would have just stayed in the warm dry house in previous years.
The first miles toward that goal start today!

I am shooting for 8,000 miles cycling in 2009, half of that from commuting. I have topped 7,000 miles quite a few times before in previous years, but never 8,000. My other goal is to further decrease my driving mileage from about 5,000 the past two years to 4,000 miles in 2009. Until I started bike commuting last year, I typically drove about 10,000 miles a year -- so I have cut my driving in half.

During 2008, I went 2637 miles. In 2009 I plan to commute no less than 3000.
(Doesn't include weekend road bike rides).
P.S. (17 mile round trip commute)

That is my goal as well. I did not start using a computer until late in the year, so this year will allow for a better measure. Want to ride to work and school every possible day, do some local rides, and do my first century this summer.

Since this is the Commuting forum, I'm not sure what miles have to do with it.
I plan to commute by bike on every single workday in 2009.
Since I work at three different locations and frequently add leisure, training or errand miles to my commute, tracking commute miles is difficult.

I didn't keep track last year (didn't ride the entire year), but I'm aiming for averaging 100 miles a week in 2009. If the weather is bad, or some other obstacle keeps me from getting 100 in a week, I'll make it up the next week. I just set up an account on mycyclinglog.com. I may get sick of keeping detailed logs, but I'm gonna try anyway. I think for a newbie, 5,000 miles a year ain't too shabby.

I suppose I could clarify my post.
After a certain point adding mileage on results in minimal fitness gains. Since I use my commute for training I want to focus on other items for racing, organized rides, and possibly brevets. Thus, no mileage goals. My goals will look something like "raise my lactate threshold X%".
Plus, I need to change things up. My intensity level stinks.

I fell way south of my goals for 08' by only hitting 1/3rd of my average mileage for the last 20 yrs. I have more excuses than I have room to mention here. I like Michaels format so much I hope he doesnt mind if I use and change it for my highlighted values:
I gained 28 lbs this year, I'll lose 28 lbs in 09'
I rode about 3200 miles this year, I'll ride 8000 miles in '09
I would also like to ride 20 Century rides in 09'
One of my goals is no used gear in 09', I overspent on EBAY this year

In 2008 I set it at 90%. I ended up with 96%. Only rode 9 times, and those were all before mid-March.
After that last drive, the weather turned nicer, and I beat my previous streak of 57 straight. I then set out to make it 100 commutes in a row. Then it became 150, then going the rest of the year without driving.
When it got dark I bought lights. When it got colder I bought warmer clothes. When it got icy I bought studded tires. I put them on a singlespeed bike I bought just for commuting.
Now I'm thinking.. why not go for a full year, and make it to at least March 19th again? And then... since it'll be nicer weather again, why not just make it a goal to never drive to work again?
That's exactly why not. I'm making myself nuts with this. Thank you.
