If it's been a bad day at work then I'm flying to get off base. When I calm down the pace slows and when I hit the woods it's time to drop the hammer!

I'm slow but fitness is a major reason for me to commute and going fast is fun so I work it a bit. Distance varies, 9-17 miles each way, about 13mph. There are some hills that are near my physical capacity to climb. No way I could wear my work clothes / too sweaty, year-round.

I'm using commuting as a way to get back into shape, and to get my lungs back into shape (after smoking for 6 years). As a result, i would probably describe my commute as "crying."

I like to push a pretty good pace on my 9 mile commute, averaging 19/20 mph. I consider it part of my training routine. I'll ride with stronger riders as well, ramping things up. Recently I've learned to pace myself as I started to get fatigued by Thursday/Friday.

I ride as fast as I can.

Sometimes, I feel good, had lots of sleep or a nice lunch and can ride pretty quick and easy and still feel good when I get to work, not quite as fast as the cars around me, but not much slower.

Other times I am hungover or had a bad lunch (burger or somethin) and cruise a little slower. Still pretty quick in the morning cuz i have to be at work on time, but the afternoon might be pretty sluggish. If I feel really tired I might even cruise on the sidewalk at a jogger's pace..

I try to move as fast as possible. I have a 9 mile bike ride, then a 8 mile bus ride, then I finish with a 8 mile bike ride on a MUP. (then I shower).

I try to do each bike riding section at a 17 to 19 mph pace.

i ride at a medium-to-fast pace on the 16 mile commute - definitely sweaty by the time i get in! 15 mph avg, which i'm happy with given the hills around here (seattle).

but i'm actually thinking of turning commutes into slow "recovery" rides. sometimes riding slower than you're used to is hard!

As a few have already also stated, it depends on which way I am going.

The trip to work is pretty casual. I get warmed up and raise the pulse a bit, but I don't push myself enough to get winded or start sweating much.

The trip home is a totally different story. I go as fast as I can along the path, then attack the 18% grade in the last two miles before my house, arriving in a heaving, sweaty mess.

Living in a mountain valley pretty much means any place you go has a climb.

well, my "pace" in relationship to my cadence remains roughly the same on all my rides. But my "pace" in relationship to my speed varies.

and it depends on mood and how much energy I have before and after work.

LOL... it depends on whether or not I get up the FIRST time the alarm goes off!
If I do, a joy ride in, the way home is taking all my frustrations of the day out on my pedals.
If I don't (get up when the alarm goes off) it's "mad frenzy" to work and the way home is taking all my frustrations of the day out on my pedals.

Just curious how fast most you ride when you commute.
I just try to get there with optimum time/effort efficiency. Uphill, either pounding up the short ones ASAP or "slogging" up the long ones at a pace that won't wear me out. On flat ground I cruise along at around 15mph. Downhill, I religiously coast whenever possible. When I used to commute on a mountain bike I was all-out in top gear the whole way, usually standing on the pedals much of the time, but this road bike isn't comfortable standing on the pedals so I don't do that anymore.

I typically ride at about 14 MPH. About 7 mile commute each way gives me a solid hour of exercise. I would describe my pace as steady and moderate. I don't treat it like a race, and I'm careful to look out for obstructions. I am quite satisfied with myself for just getting there and back by bike instead of driving. I'm big on efficiency. Maybe over time I'll get a little faster. I have had a bad habit of procrastinating, so I will ride harder when I leave at the last minute, but I am slowly getting better - my goal is to leave early enough to arrive 20 minutes early, but if I get there 10 minutes early I'm pretty happy with myself now. To keep things simple I try to leave an hour before the start of my shift regardless of conditions: ~ 30 min for the ride, 10-15 minutes to dress and walk to the shop, and the other 15-20 minutes in case of a breakdown or getting stopped by a train and for headwinds.

Headwinds obviosly slow me down, but unless it's extreme usually only a small bit.

My newer Swobo Dixon is a little faster than my older Mongoose rigid MTB, partially because I removed the front deraillieur and use only the middle chainring on the MTB.

Tailwinds save a slight amount of time.

Using the studded tires slows me down a surprisingly small amount.

Riding at night (my favorite) is a little slower because I slow down a bit to look at the road more carefully. If I ever have to buy a new headlight I'll get the next-brightest Dinotte - my 200L is adequate, but sometimes just barely. This is especially noticable on asphalt.

My pace is high enough to make it a workout. I try to maintain a cadence of 100+ rpm at all times in both directions. At the office I change into different clothes.

I commute on a touring bike with rear panniers, and average about 15 mph for 16+ miles each way. I don't push too hard, so that I don't have to take rest days. I only started commuting last summer, and ride about 4 days per week. I tend to take Fridays off, so that I can be more rested for the weekend group rides or brevets. I have a 200K ride coming next weekend, so won't be pushing very hard next week.

Moderate.
I'm in no race and am not training for anything.
16-17mph on the flats, 10-12 on the hills (we have a few steep hills).
