Perfect riding weather this morning.
This has been a stellar week.

Listened to some Beastie Boys on the ride, that made it fun.
Time to clean the drive and put my new rear tire on.

Last night I tried to get my rear caliper to loosen up. The pistons just wont retract fully. I think I need an overhaul. I took the pads out, blew compressed air around, and re-installed with two thin plastic squares between the pads and the rotor. When I removed the plastic, there was loads of clearance, but the minute I pumped the brake, it clamped down and started rubbing again. I improved it a little bit though, so I quit while I was ahead. (If anyone has any ideas, let me know... Hayes hydraulic.)

Take it to your LBS. You've already gone way beyond my hardware capabilities. About all I can handle is changing a tire. Thank goodness I can afford a good bike mechanic, because if I had to depend on my own capabilities, my bikes would be in pretty poor shape.

That's what I'm thinking, but I've never dealt with hydraulic discs beyond pad-changing. I'm on vacation all next week so maybe I'll see if I can do it without digging myself too deeply into a hole.

First commute in about 3 weeks. First commute in Boston. Loved it. I was tired, and slow, but I had a great time. 6.35 miles in 30:45 of saddle time. I would love to have fewer stops on the the last half of the commute, but now that I'm getting familiar with it, I'll look to avoid traffic stops.

Got off night shift, saw my dad and his new trike (he blames me for making riding look fun...ha!), rode fast (for me anyway) and all was going good. Headed off to my bank and took a fast turn thru some water in a gutter at bank and Wham! Looks like I got in a scuffle with 60 grit. I'm fine, tattoos are fine, bike is good. Scrapped the heck out of my RD and B-17. Bag has some new tears and such. Gonna bruise up pretty!

A good morning when all is said and done, really...

rumrunn6 08-07-09 09:58 AM

Ouch! Heal fast.

2nd commute this week. Got dropped by a spandexed-up roadie and a guy with loaded panniers, but the humidity was so low it barely mattered to me. Always fun riding thru the national mall on the way to work.

Ka_Jun 08-07-09 10:36 AM

Ran way late, today. Last night, extended the commute a bit, took my time coming home.

HardyWeinberg 08-07-09 10:45 AM

High 50s, brisk. 8 yr old wanted his sweatshirt so we turned back early for that.

kgriffioen 08-07-09 12:01 PM

Cloudy for the ride in. Temps mid 60's. Close to perfect. Turned a 12 mile ride in to 21 because........well just because.

Absolutely perfect weather today. Mid/upper 50s, sunny, dry, not humid, barely a wind to be found. I experimented and did a first singlespeed commute this morning. To my surprise, I made it up both short, steep hills on my morning ride without hopping off. Amusingly, I was 30 seconds faster this morning on the SS than yesterday on my normal 14-speed commuter.

Here's the SS in question. '84 Schwinn Le Tour, geared 40/16, 700x25 Conti GP4000 tires.

Man I love that bike!

Doohickie 08-07-09 03:21 PM

It was hot riding home. I played in traffic. That can be interesting if done right.

making 08-07-09 03:23 PM

Playing in traffic. Suddenly I dont feel too smart. Hope I know enough to come in out of the rain.

caloso 08-07-09 03:24 PM

Lord Bass: Is that a World Sport?

[edit: Never mind, it's a LeTour. I guess I should actually read these posts instead of just reacting to pretty pictures!}

I arrived at an intersection with a green light for me. SUV crossing from my left to right blows through his red, turns left (I am now looking at the back of the vehicle) into the break in the median. Now we both have a green light but he stops. Soon as the light turns RED...he goes.

I think he was lost because next chance he got he whipped a U-turn.

No big deal for me because I don't put the light color as a high priority to my safety. I look both ways before I cross the street, light color be damned.

A warm ride in today, 72 F ( 22 C). It is supposed to get near a 100 F (37 C) today. It will be nice
to sweat my way home this afternoon, and I enjoy it. In the meantime another day of work.

tarwheel 08-10-09 05:51 AM

I really wanted to ride today, but the temperature is supposed to hit 101 F this afternoon with a heat index of 105+. So I drove. I bike commuted several days in 2007 with temps over 100 F, and I told myself never again. With all the hills and humidity around here, 100+ temps are a killer.

jdmitch 08-10-09 07:13 AM

It's starting to be dark when I leave the house to ride into work... been a while since it's been like that.

That request was from last Thursday and someone was listening because it arrived yesterday. I was out 50 kilometers from home at about 11 am when a wall of hot humid air came up from the south, probably Detroit or even Cleveland, towing with it was rain, thunder and lightning. Have you ever got so soaked from the rain that it was very difficult to peel off your jersey?
Anyway, who ever sent summer our way, thanks. :thumb:

Weird commute today. Was running behind and when I got out there in the neighborhood, it was like a scene out of Omega Man. There was no one out that I normally see, no cars passing, seemed like no birds, no dogs barking. It was eerily silent, until I hit the main artery. Creeped me out.

Saw three other commuters, one that filtered past me in traffic that I caught up to later on the MUP, one I never caught up to, and one that commutes to my building that I only saw for the first time, today.

Allycat24 08-10-09 07:59 AM

Steamy and sultry!

making 08-10-09 08:21 AM

extra day off today. So I rode the exact same distance as my commute anyway. I think we (yea, all you guys) are weird.

jpdesjar 08-10-09 10:18 AM

Nice ride this morning.
I put a new rear tire on and it rolled along nicely, it's a 700x32.
I wish I had worn shorts instead of pants, it's going to be toasty on the ride home.

HardyWeinberg 08-10-09 10:59 AM

Rode fixed next to my 8 yr old. The leg w/ him was easy, but once I started putting some rpms on after dropping him at his destination, my left crank fell off! No crank bolt wrench in my saddle bag, in fact this is the only bike I tote a mini tool on. 2 adjacent tools on the mini fit the corners of the bolt so I could put it back on (twice, it loosened up again ~5 miles down the road). I do have a crank bolt sized (is it 8 or 10mm) allen key in my desk so hopefully should be able to make it home fine.

Not a normal commute, but Saturday night I went with my husband to pick up pizza (our first time on a bike) and a movie. We ended up hitting road construction for about a full block. We both got followed by two totally rude drivers reving their engines so we would move out of the way. We were at different areas of the block, but just couldn't believe the rudeness of the drivers around there. Did they want us to drive in the road construction? And since it was road construction with a very low speed limit, did they want to kill the guys doing the construction too? If it weren't for me trying out my new pizza holder on my bike, I would have been angry.

Hey! I resemble that comment.

Moved offices over the weekend so today was new commute day. My commute is now even shorter than it was before. Didn't really scope the place out beforehand so right now I'm locked to a street sign. Found a bike rack in front of a different building around the corner and across the street. It's close, but not close enough for my lazy ass to lock their everyday. Who knows. I'll give it a try tomorrow to see how I like it.

scoatw 08-10-09 03:20 PM

I rode home today in what felt like the hottest day of the year. I know this morning was. It was 75f with something like 90% humidity at 4:30am.
....This aftn I tried and failed to outrun a small storm front that just brought a light steady rain. It felt real good riding in a tank top and shorts. Every once in a while a nice cool breeze would blow across the area and cool me off. But it felt nice sitting at a traffic light with the rain and the cagers all buttoned up in their cars. I know I was more comfortable than they were. That's the nice thing about bike commuting is being in tune with the weather. Whether its enjoying a nice quiet aftn with a light snow falling, or riding in a nice, steamy summer rain. We're comfortable no matter what. And the stress factor is real low.

jyossarian 08-10-09 03:47 PM

Rode home with a blow dryer in my face.
