Got yelled at by a Mom pushing a stroller with a baby in it as I was bombing down Mass Ave at Central Sq. in Cambridge. She was half way through the crosswalk, she had the "Don't Walk" signal, I had the green light. Motor vehicle traffic was proceeding through the intersection with the green as they should, and she's pushing a baby stroller through it?? What's wrong with some people! Wait for the Walk signal! Especially with a baby stroller! Especially with heavy traffic through a busy intersection!
She was partially obscured by a car ahead of me and to my right, so I was still going about 20 mph when I saw her 30 or so feet ahead of me. It was still easy enough not to hit her, but I got called an a***ole as if I were the one behaving improperly at this intersection  |
The morning was cool and foggy. My glasses fogged up a bit, but otherwise it was good.
Heading home, on the other hand, felt like the beginning of the 5th Harry Potter Movie. You know, the part where the dementors are coming, and the sky looks like a stormy black hole just appeared out of nowhere. I managed to skirt the worst part of the storm but still got drenched and blown around a bit. However, that's the fun part. ;-) |
Got a call that my 8 yr old was hurt, and he said to me on the phone that he wanted med attention, so I raced home (6 miles, vs 12 w/ detour to pick him up), got the car, put him and his bike into it, got him to chiro. In practice, he was basically fine but there was one other time recently where he wasn't so I had a bit of a hairtrigger. Next time he has to tough it out a little more.
At least my crankarms stayed on for the race home. And, on the bright side, it started raining while he was in the doc's office. Unfortunately my wife is trailering our daughter home in it. |
Was riding north on the wilson bridge trail when i passed a couple... I rang once when i was about to pass the guy, then ringed again when i was going to pass the girl. When i finished i heard someone kept ringing their bell, i guess i must have annoyed them with my ringing twice. ahahha

Hurricane Felicia fizzled, so it's business as usual today. Hopefully any lightning will delay until after dark and be gone by morning....

Met a guy pushing his bike on the path near the airport. Looked like he was carrying a pedal. I slowed and asked him if he need an Allen key. Because it's Aberdeen, he says "Naw, min, 'at bolts sheared richt aff. I'll hae til walk tae ma work".
Turns out he was in fact holding the crank. And bolt. Poor dude. Nearest LBS about 15 miles away. |
Another nice ride in, 68 F ( 20 C). I am loving the hot weather, of which we are supposed to have at least one more day. Lots of debris on the side of the road after the thunderstorm last night, but nothing
serious. The puddles leftover were already starting to dry out. |
I knew I should have put the rear fender on this morning. The shower felt pretty good though, the only thing I was concerned about was my wet brooks and the bottom of my backpack, but my clothing was nice and dry when I got to work. My shorts should be dry by the time I leave.

It was so nice to be on the bike this morning after skipping my Monday commute due to weather. There was nothing spectacular about the ride, except that everything about riding to work is spectacular. The tuck down the hill from my house where I hit 43.3 today (coasting), the sun burning the fog off the river, hammering up the little hills instead of spinning for a change, seeing two other riders going in the opposite direction who looked like they are training for something.
And I have to say that I do have a truly great end to my commute in to work. The campus on which I work has a large pond / small lake at the main entrance. People who drive by and badge through without looking miss the snapping turtles lurking in the shallows, the blue heron standing still in the weeds, and today an anhinga lying spread out on his belly sunning his wings. Can't wait for the ride home. |
After the last 2 days of torrential rains it was nice to get back on the bike. Everywhere is still soaked but the roads had dried out for the most part. 69*F suppose to be in the 80's later.

When I got home from my ride yesterday I heard something rustling around in the garden and when I looked closer it was one of the cats sleeping and stretching in the cool shade. |
Weird commute, very busy traffic, due to an event at the convention center that Colin Powell and Giuliani, are supposed to be at. Saw 7 other commuters, then saw what appeared to be a cycling team on a training ride. Group of maybe 7 roadies in Air Force jerseys, maybe? Another cyclist took the same street I was on and she looked hesitant, was riding in the door zone w/ headphones and jumped on to the curb. Looked dangerous.

Back in the saddle today after wussing out yesterday due to the extreme heat. The forecasters had predicted a high of 101 F, but it only got up to 99 and I regretted my wussiness. I had a nice ride in this morning and the temperature was already 79 F at 5:30 am. It is supposed to be much cooler today with the high only reaching 97 F, but the forecasters will probably be wrong again and it will top 100 since I rode.

Yesterday going home, I had to take a slight detour that took me from a bad part of town to an even worse part of town. It was during daylight hours and I was cycliing up a very gentle hill at a slow comfortable pace when this dodgy looking dude comes up on a Marin with road tires and various noises, riding no hands, determined to pass me (which he did) and then he decided he was too tired and cut me up and went into a side road. And that's all. But he sure was dodgy looking, and I doubt that was his Marin (or if it is now, I doubt he aquired it in the 'correct' fashion (yup, I'm making a stereotype - sue me).
Later, a bunch of other guys were staring at my bike. They were obviously admiring it with a veiw to acquiring new merchandise without paying for it. This morning's ride was my usual route, and I tried slowing down but I just couldn't. Towards the last mile, I slowed right down when I heard some dude panting next to me and trying really hard to over take. I let him (I didn't speed up, just carried on at casual pace). Then he was exhausted, got in front of me, and slowed right down to recover. No problem, I just over took him again. I had stop at the lights and go again when he caught up to me and attempted the same maneouver. This time I just sped up a touch... |
It's hot and humid here. I'm making an effort to slow down and take it easy a bit. I don't have a shower at work; don't want to show up soaked in sweat.
Last night I enjoyed rain. The whole day it was building up to it, 100F/90+% humidity. It felt great as the streets finally cooled down. On a negative note, I forgot to take off my topeak morph pump when I went to class. I made a mental note of it once I sat down. An hour later, during break, I went to get it. Someone swiped it :( |

Nearly home, making the final left turn from 25mph collector to 25mph residential w/on street parking at about 20mph before I started turn. As I was turning I may have noticed a mail delivery vehicle stopped at box between parked cars about 3 cars up from intersection. I turned sharply to give it wide berth and was in center to wrong side of un-striped roadway. Just before I was passing the mail truck it very suddenly and sharply started to turn out. So sharply I was sure it was going to pull a u-turn so I holler 'whoa, whoa" and the driver stopped fast. I went onward - a little overreaction on my part perhaps.
Went home about 1/4mi past this point and started cool down process. Abot 10 minutes later.... knock, knock, knock. The mailman was at my door with my mail and was appologizing greatly for not seeing me before pulling out. I told hiim no problem at all, he probably couldn't have seen me as I had just left turned onto the road. I told him I only called out as I thought he was going to u-turn. A very friendly and nice exchange. |
Nice run to work today. I hope it doesn't get too warm for the ride home.

This morning I was treated to the most beautiful sunrise coming up directly over the end of the Gandy bridge, as I was pedaling due East. At first there was this bright glow at the end of the bridge, and I thought, what’s going on there? Is there a fire? Then a few seconds later, as the glow grew brighter and decidedly more orange, it dawned on me (pun intended) – oh, it’s the sunrise!
I was on the road approaching the bridge, with at least four miles of straight highway running across Tampa Bay in front of me, and the most beautiful red-orange ball began to rise at the road's vanishing point. As the bottom of the disk was just creeping up to the horizon, I could see a high-rise building silhouetted against it. I almost stopped to dig out my cell phone camera and take a picture. Then I just figured, naw, enjoy it and just ride. So I spent the next three miles staring at the beautiful sight before me. What a magical start to my morning. |
Yesterday on the C470 path I was coming up on a couple on a tandem bike about to announce my intention to pass. They must've heard me coming because they really started cranking and pretty soon they were cruising at ~30mph. This was on a slight downhill with a nice tailwind. I've never seen a tandem go nearly that fast.
Of course I couldn't let them stay in front of me, I passed them at 34mph and turned and smiled at the guy in front. He didn't smile back. Great ride after that all the way. |
Ride home wasn't NEARLY as good as the ride in.
Flat about halfway home due to a Heineken bottle that someone smashed on the side of the road. Start to put in the spare tube, and my pump falls apart. Of course I'm flustered so it takes me 10 minutes to get all the pieces back together (the plunger had to SNAP in, which I didn't realize, or the valve part wouldn't go together). Got it pumped up, put it on the bike and see a nice bulging sidewall by the stem. The tube was starting to poke through cause the tire didnt' clinch well - quickly let the air out, loosened the ring at the base of the valve, spun the tire a bit and tried again. Finally got it all back together. Walked back and cleared as much of the glass off as I could with my feet and my gloves. On the bright side, a guy in a car did turn around and come to offer help when he saw me fiddling with my pump. By the time he had turned around I had gotten it back together. I doubt his compressor fit a presta anyway, but it kinda made me happy that he stopped -- confirmed my naive hope that for the most part, people are good. Maybe it wasn't such a bad commute after all. |
Been hot and humid here in GA but still had two days of great rides this week and full 5 days last week. Tomorrow they show some heavy weather (thunder storms) in the afternoon. Probably be a cager tomorrow. :( Even charged the A/C on the burb (it is for sale).

lovely summer conditions , fresh mornings and not so hot afternoons , mostly dry now for a couple of days , offroads tracks coming dusty , lots of fast riding , detour through the parks and woods on the way home , not too much going on at work , nice time to rest my legs and ride even faster on the way home.
I saw some small deer this week , staring at the cyclist , but not scared , pretty cool. I've put a new bar ( larger and slightly rising ) , and new tyres on my MTB , makes me feel young again . I needed that , cause I turned 41 last week , and feel quite old now . But my son , aged 3 , is a master at bikeskills now , so the episode will be continued. Have fun and enjoy the rest of the good weather. |
Another good ride in, 68 F ( 20 C). Yesterday, it was reported at work that a lady who is an avid rider was struck by a falling limb and was in serious condition at shock trama. She apparently incurred a fractured skull and a broken collarbone. They apparently were able to stop whatever intracranial bleeding there was. It's more than a job keeping track of all the cars around us, but keeping track of Trees above will just have to be left to luck.

A bit chilly this morning.
|
New record time! :)
|
Here in SE Michigan it was perfect - 61 , clear, dry with no wind.....No record time for me today tho!
|
Fun ride this morning.
I got totally drenched on the ride home yesterday so I was really appreciating the dry streets this morning. My chain was a bit dry, need to lube it again. Long skids on wet grass=wicked. |
Lots of traffic when a SUV blasts by me only to get in line for the traffic lights ahead but moves over tight to the curb lane so I can't get in front of him. No problem, I pass him and all the cars in front of me Joeybike style on the outside. Put three blocks on the SUV before he caught up to me again. :D
