punture on a dark un-lit main road, couldn't found the source of the punture so wasted two tubes before starting a 10 mile walk home! luckyly my flatmate has a heart of gold and rescued me only after a 30 minute walk [in spd's]

Today was warmer than I thought. I got out of bed and the bedroom was cold with the windows open, so I put on a tech shirt, long sleeve shirt, and light jacket with some wind pants. By the time I finished the bike-bus-bike I do in the mornings I was wearing the tech shirt and wind pants.
Afternoon looks beautiful - just had to walk acorss the street to a meeting. I am seriously thinking about kicking off early and enjoying a glorious ride home. |
Sunny and almost too cool for this Arizonan, coming off a summer of 105+ I was a little chilly at first in 71 degrees ... but I got over it once I got going.
|
windy, windy, windy...45km/hr steady with gusts around 65km/hr. it was garbage day in one of the neighbourhoods through which i ride...crazy tumbleweed-like garbage bags/recycling bins etc. legs were ++tired when i arrived at work...late.
|
I took the bus, but I'll be damned if I'm busing it tomorrow, not with my bar ends all taped up and suuuuuper comfy!
|
holy mother of wind today. At least it was headwind on the way in and tailwind on the way home...i made crazy good time coming home.

Taking last rides on my 25-year-old Nishiki this week. Good weather. She retaliated with a few flats, though. I've been running the rear tire really thin because I knew I was fixing to replace the old red steed and didn't want to spend any more $$ on her. Here's to a bike that gave me many more miles and utility than I ever imagined. The Suntour components would survive a bomb and the steel frame withstood a lot of abuse. Upgrading to a Surly LHT. Didn't intend to spend that much on a commuter but for a variety of reasons, I moved up the food chain. I wanted a touring bike, wanted steel, wanted flexibility with tire widths and a bunch of other stuff. In the end I figured three years commuting on a clunker easily justified the cost of a primo new bike. My wife didn't like it but I wore her down. :) Also seriously considered a Trek 520 but didn't like the U-brakes and Surly came in at a better price with what seemed to me to be better components. Bike arrives early next week, can't wait!

I was in a training session all day today and since we got out at 3:30, I treated my self to a long detour home. A bit windy on the way out, but I love the tailwind coming back on the final stretch.

I damaged my knee over a week ago and have been driving to work. :( Today was my first bike commute in over a week. i have been taking antibiotics and I couldn't break 15.5mph average speed. Usually 19-20mph is my norm, I feel like crap now. Tomorrow is the last day for the pills, so I'll get back into it by next week. of course its supposed to start raining next week, and I have yet to ride to work in the rain, though I have all the gear for it.
I'll be cutting the stitches out this next weekend, good times. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2...8/P9260313.jpg |
Easy ride in, minus the sticking link in my chain. Good temps at 44 F ( 6 C), but a little difficult to dress for. It's right at that chilly mark, but once you heat up, it's not chilly at all. Still in shorts, and
hopefully able to stay that way into November. |

50F for me this morning, with a kicking tailwind. :p I got to work sweaty. That's because I was bundled up abnormally. I caught a cold, or perhaps even swine flu*:eek: and today was my first time on the bike since last Friday. I wanted to stay warm. Wound up riding behind a young woman on a hybrid at 16MPH most of the way in. My lungs burned a bit. I'm not 100%, I guess. *Several symptoms, but no fever, so who knows what it was... |
Beautiful morning, mid 50's. Not sure why, but the wind/chill got to my ears pretty good. They're still tingling......May have to break out the balaclava (I'm used to 90F at 4:30 am, dont give me a hard time) and go in to work ninja style
|
33F today outside my door. A nice mist covering everything in Denver. Pretty cold out, my jacket kept my mostly dry.
Got the, "You rode in this weather?" look from my coworkers. |

I'm not 100%, I guess. *Several symptoms, but no fever, so who knows what it was... Nice ride in for me today. Yesterday's wind has abated, so it wasn't an effort to stay moving in a straight line... Cooler temps are back today, too. 50-ish this AM for the ride in. Optimal riding weather for me once I'm warmed up. Still in shorts and back to a long-sleeve tee. On a potentially sad note, a black squirrel I had been noticing daily along the MUP for the last week is not out in the mornings anymore. I'm hoping that he is just "sleeping in" or has moved to a new tree. He was a cool looking squirrel, and the fact that the parkway is just 100 feet or so away has me worried about a bad outcome for "Chip". |
Lost my blinkie on the way in. Mad about that, because I lost another one last week. Grrr. Hoping to find it on the way in tomorrow. Yesterday was unbelieveable! the wind was so insane that at one point, I just burst out laughing.. I was peddling and going nowhere. Took me an hour and 20 minutes to go 11 miles.
Get this: I was in the right turn only lane. No one in front or behind me. I am in the middle of the lane signaling my turn, when this b***ch in a mom-mobile sails by me on my left, cuts me off and turns right right in front of me all the while laying on her horn. Thank goodness I was paying attention and was able to stop in time. I hope I see her again so I have a chance to nicely explain the danger of her actions. |
Easy direct ride in this morning. I came in early to prepare for a meeting, then I'm leaving early this afternoon to take the kids to soccer practice. My wife has a late afternoon meeting so we'll load up the trailer bike and my son's bike into the van, she'll drop us off on the way to her meeting and Dad and Twins will ride home.

mid 20's commute at 5 am....beat that temp. ;)
|
Considering I played poker last night, drank beer, stayed up until 1:30am, and woke up at 7:15am...not bad! A little rough getting moving, but the cool air was nice.
|
47*F, almost no traffic for some reason...great ride in, took it slower the usual as I donated plasma yesterday.
|
foggy, speedy.
|
not bad at all. temps in the 70s, no wind, no worries. I made up a song about my cat. good times.:D
|
Cold, Foggy and damp. This time I am better preppared. Used my wool winter mittens. Fingers not as cold. But I think I need better lighting system than my turtle light. Not sure if it is the cold temperature that is causing the grease in the BB to harden, but it sure felt more difficult to pedal!

Taking it a little slower this week after a close call with a driver Monday morning driving with all his windows still fogged up. I came to a hard stop within about a meter of broadsiding him as he crossed my street, and not sure that he even noticed. I'm glad he wasn't inconvenienced by the experience. Yesterday I had a woman sweep leaves on me from the sidewalk (I was on the road, waiting for a light), which I assumed was an accident until she started hitting my bike with her broom. It was a little old lady, so I gave her the "huh?" look of disbelief, and she shoo'd me. I figured she wasn't all there, so I just went on with my ride. Easily one of favorite commutes, for sheer ridiculousness. |
Nice ride this morning, and a bit damp this evening. Slight tailwind both directions. Can't complain about that. Didn't see even one other bike today. I guess the fare weather riders are packing it in.
|
Drove my old car today. Tender knees; have to lay off cycling a bit. About to retire and thereafter will simply roll along slowly when the knees are tender; there'll be no rush to get to work. Now I still check my watch when riding and push harder if running late. Also competing against myself for the best time; type A behavior, will be glad to let it go.
|
Had the MUP mostly to myself today. Dreary overcast, but dry. Headwind. Low 50sF. I felt very slow. Still recovering from my disease I guess.
At some point I got (music band) Porcupine Tree's song "Shallow" in my brain and started singing and playing air/handlebar drums. :D Good thing the place was deserted. |
33F. No rain or snow like yesterday. Nice ride in.

So my commute home does end w/ 2 sharp uphills (and my am commute begins with those 2 downhills), but moving my daughter to a preschool along my exact route, trailering her 7-8 miles a day instead of 3, has definitely crystallized the realization that my commute into work is definitely mostly uphill, and home is mostly downhill (except for all the climbing at the end).
|
It was somewhere in the high 30s this morning, coldest start yet but clear and nice. Something down in the drivetrain started screeching as I pedalled, never heard that before. Then in a few minutes it stopped, presumably after the parts got warmed up. Best guess is it was the bottom bracket, which I have neglected to open and regrease. I've been getting by with a stragegically aimed squirt of WD-40 every few weeks to stop the squeaks, but that may not work much longer.
