I don't bother anymore.
Exactamundo. If I feel like being generous, I'll stop WAY over to the right of the lane, near the curb, in case a car behind me gets a chance to take a right on red.

I also keep an eye on the turn signals of the cars behind me and try to get out of their way if I can. If they want to turn but aren't using their signal, well...

In most states it is legal to make right turns on red, however, it is not legal to pass a vehicle on the right in the same lane. You have to pass on the right if you want to make a right turn on red while another vehicle is waiting at the red light.

So the motorist is breaking the law trying to pass a bicycle on the right. I have no problems with the motorist doing it, providing they are simply only making the right turn and not trying to zoom past me after the light turns green.

I have had this happen to me by a bus and a small car. I always stand right in the middle of the lane when waiting at a red now. Just don't give them the room.

This has happened to me before. It's annoying but I don't let it get to me.

I agree with genec and this is why I always try to leave room for right turners. I like to think that some people appreciate it.

genec,
You could do figure eights. I hear that's the popular thing to do if you can do them around bikesnob.

Update

The manager of the fleet service for the coffee delivery comp in question called me back. Told me that this gal wouldn't be driving for them any more. They had other complaints (details unkown) from other drivers and they were going to move her to some other job or get rid of her.

Felt kind of bad about that but, I wasn't the one being stupid.

I almost always left bias to let right turn on red drivers turn. I've let thousands of drivers pass on my right to turn and very often get a friendly wave (or even a window down 'thank you'). Only four times out of the ~5k drivers that turned right have I had a driver continue straight. In all those cases I was biased a bit to far to the left. Instead keep the space to your right limited so it is a bit of a squeeze - you know it is a squeeze if most drivers pause and don't pass until you point to the ground (only for those w/turn signal on) to your right to let them know it is OK to move forward and turn.
