Home air compressor

Anyone have a nice home compressor. I use the pump I have for my car, but it's a drag running out to the car and hooking it up. Tried a radio shack ac/dc power supply I had from a while back but it didn't work. There's got to be a decent unit we can plug in at home for a quick pump to 120 psi.

I got a 1 gallon deal from Lowe's. It runs my nail gun, puts air in my car tires and some other small air tools I have. I don't use it for my bike tires though, just get a good floor pump for your bike tires.

Any cheap foot pump will do the job.

Any low cost compressor will be the oil less wake people in another time zone type so if you want something just for bikes don't bother. I hate to use my compressor, its just too noisy, going to spend the extra $ for a oil type and get ride of the noise maker I have now.

Since I've been working on my car a lot longer than riding, I have a 60GAL Compressor in the garage. When I need to air up, I hook up a 50' hose and throw on the tire pump attachment.

I wouldn't use a compressor on bike tires. Floor pump works fine.

People always say this, and i have no idea why. I have a 60 gall air compressor. And have used nothing else to air up bike tires for the last 20 years. Works fine.

It's because most of us don't have a 60 gal. air compressor. Yours probably doesn't even come on when you top off your bikes tires!

I wouldn't buy a compressor just for a bike. A pump to too quick to justify the cost of a compressor.

If I'm on the road and have my bike with me, I have a small 12V in my truck that can fill a bike tire very quick. My truck tire in about 3 mins.

Costco....$25 CAD

Well, as I see it.... sure a good air compressor will put air in your bike tires so you can ride using HUMAN power...

Anyone see there irony here?

If you are going to waste energy with an electric compressor to do the work you should be doing yourself, why bother riding the bike when you can hop in the SUV for a short trip to the big box store... so that... you can... buy a new...(wait for it......) air compressor!

Is it just me?!?

I have a compressor. I hate hearing it start up, as they periodically do, when the pressure falls. So I leave it off, then it takes a noisy few minutes to get up to pressure. I can top off the tires with a floor pump a lot easier, faster, and quieter.

But I did buy a nifty thing called a presta-flator. It goes on the compressor hose like a standard compressor accessory, but has a trigger, air gauge, and presta head. The trigger allows small amounts of air to be injected so that you don't overshoot your target psi. It works well, but I don't use it, because it is much easier, faster, and quieter to use a floor pump.

A friend of mine has his compressor set to 120 psi, and just pops on the presta head until the air stops moving, and he is good to go. His compressor must not be as noisy as mine, or must not be located next to or under the bedroom.

I have one I bought for use with the car and the mountain bike.
It cost ~$100, and goes up to 95psi.

Now that I've gotten into road bikes, I wish I had bought the 150psi model.

I have a $99 model from home depot but I don't use it with my bikes.
By the time I plug it in and wait for it to fill up (while it wakes up the neighbors), I'd be done topping off my tires with my regular bike floor pump. The compressor only gets used with my air tools and for pumping up my car tires.

The specs from B&D are 160psi, (which is still all I would ever need):

This is the first time I've ever seen an AC/DC compressor.
A quick search via Google Shopping turned up a best price of $36.99:

That is tempting.

Maybe I'll stop by Home Depot & Lowes later ...

According to the web HD has it for $49.98
Lowes' price: $44.98

BOAT and RV ACCESSORIES.COM charges $36.99 but $13. for shipping for a total of $49.99 so it's less expensive to pick it up locally at Lowes ...

I too have a 60 gallon air compressor, but I use it for air tools, and inflating automobile tires rather than bike tires. For my inflating my bike tires, my floor pump works better and quieter than having to fire up the 100+ db air compressor.

I think a lot of the advice not to use a compressor for bike tires dates from when most service stations (heh - remember those? I must be getting old!) had air available, but you never knew how much pressure they were running in the line. Some had 50 psi, which would hardly do a decent inflation on a balloon tire, while some ran 175 psi, which would drastically overinflate almost anything. I remember blowing out a tire on my Schwinn wheelie bike with the local service station air hose.

If you have a tire pressure gauge (or, better yet, a head with a gauge built in) and know how quickly your compressor fills a tire, I don't see anything wrong with it. Air is air. If it's an oil-type without an oil trap, you might get a bit of compressor oil in with the air, but I doubt that'd hurt anything.

really? This won't work?

I have a nice air compressor too, but the time it takes me to use the floor pump to top off the bike tires is a no brainer. I'm missing something?

What is the time factor you all talk about? My compressor fills a 700/23 tire basically instantly. I set the regulator to 120 psi. I check it when I have the time, when I don't have the time, I dont check it.

Nothing is wrong with a pump, but it won't run my air impact, nailer, sander, ratchet, or any of the other air devices that are laying around here/

Seriously, I think it's because some people have used a compressor either without a regulator or an improperly set regulator, which overinflated the tire to the point of failure.

I've written about this before on a previous thread about compressors, but I have actually blown up, as in exploded, a tire when using an industrial compressor that wasn't regulated. Scary stuff.
