Was just looking around Canadian Tire website, found this.

they are selling a Masterlock mini u-lock - not unlike the Kyrptonite mini. Its even yellow.


Anyone have an experience with this? For $20 i might just get it as an addition deterrant. I already use a Series 4 Krptonite U-Lock but it can't hurt to have another

oh good eye. Guess Masterlock hasn't caught on to the Bic pen trick. Shame on them.

If you pair it with some other reasonably secure lock, it would be a great deterrent. It looks just like the more secure kryptonite.

When the fuss errupted over BIC pens and U-locks, I tried my BIC pen in all the locks with cylingrical keys on the bike rack at work and it wouldnt fit any of them. If you already have a U-lock you should use a chain lock as back-up.

How would you lock your bike with a lock that small? I think it's meant to be used with a chain. It's tiny. Look how big it is in comparison to the keys.

I still don't see how such a small lock could fit around any pole. Take another look at the size of the lock. It's much smaller than a mini-U lock.

One would hope that the OP realizes that it's for use with a chain.

To the OP: My experience with Canadian Tire is that it's a great place to buy tires. For your car, that is. Their bicycle stuff is C-R-A-P. They source out the cheapest "Made in some obscure Asian country" stuff and slap their name on it. I suppose to the untrained eye the lock would provide the additional deterrent that you're hoping for but I would still shy away from their line-up of bicycle accessories. If I can't find what I want at my LBS I usually go with MEC. If you don't live near a store they ship stuff for about $6.50 but if you order $75 or more worth of stuff shipping is free. They have the same type of lock here. It may also be a cheaply made lock with "Planet Bike" logo stamped on it but at least it's got flat keys and it's cheaper than the Crappy Tire offer.

I agree with you on the quality of Canadian Tire bike products. I was only looking at the bike locks they sell there as a secondary deterrent to my main Krpto U-Lock.

I really just want something to lockup the front wheel to the frame in addition to my standard U-Lock to the back wheel/frame/pole. It doesn't have to be the toughest lock ever, just something to make the thief move along.

In fact, the best idea for this i've found is the handcuff bike lock. The name is not coming to mind right now? I understand their inherent weakness and the mixed review they've had, but i'm ok with that. Just want the thief to move along to the next bike.
