In spite of the *ahem* incident on my commute this morning, I managed to take a reasonably pleasant shot. Didn't expect to see birds in a flame tree in the middle of Southport.

I wanted to document my commute, but didn't want to overload the thread with pictures. Follow the link to a webpage with the photos of my morning commute. I strapped the camera to the handlebars and snapped away. Most were too blurry to use, but a few made the cut. I'll post one here...

No commute today. I had to go pick up my new bike. Actually, had to meet the shop owner at St. Mary, Montana for its maiden voyage up Logan Pass on the Going to the Sun Highway! This was my first attempt and I was not very well prepared. I made it to within 3 miles of the summit.

I've riden that!!!! It's great!

Actually have a video of part of my NYC commute. After I cut through central park from east to west, I hit the westside greenway for the majority of my commute all the way to the office. Greenway video, click on #15 59th st to Battery Park

OK, finally got a picture of my commute. This is the main road I ride into work, FM830. Not very good as I was shooting into the sun but kinda get an idea. That bump in the road is about as big of a hill you can find in this part of texas.

Here is one of the pics I took on my commute last Thursday (it's a little dark in the morning). I have a few more if you're interested at:

A pic from this Monday with beautiful clouds that ended right at the horizon, allowing Mt Rainier to poke through:

I made a 360° panarama shot this morning -- fair warning, the file is 1.7 megs. You need a recent version of Quicktime to see it correctly.
http://monarch.gsu.edu/jeff/commute/...2004_thumb.jpg Click here for the full-sized panorama. |
that's pretty good. how do you do these panoramas?
|
I use a hand-held digital camera and The Panorama Factory Software. Just stand in one place and take one photo, then rotate to the right, making sure to overlap the photos by about 20%. If you are interested, I have some more here.
If you right-click and save them on your hard drive and then open them in Quicktime, you can see them full-screen. Enjoy! |
Pictures from yesterdays ride in. A bit of a story regarding this sequence of shots. I often see Great Blue Herons perched on branches in the Sammamish watching gargoyle like for fish. In this series of shots there is this black bird on the upper branch and a GBH on the lower. It had just hopped up there from the stream. The black bird looks at it then dives into the water and swims away. Not willing to share :)
(Have to say, I really wish I had more zoom on the camera) http://www.spiralcage.com/pics/Cycli....14.04GBH3.jpg http://www.spiralcage.com/pics/Cycli....14.04GBH2.jpg http://www.spiralcage.com/pics/Cycli....14.04GBH1.jpg |
The black bird looks like a cormorant.
|
It is a comorant & there seems to be a population explosion going on for this species in Puget Sound country. I see 3 or 4 regulars on my lake nearly every day along with great blue herons & lots of ducks & geese. In years past, I never saw comorants anywhere but on the Sound. Don

Hey thanks ya'll, I've been wondering what that bird was for years. I often see it on that branch with it's neck fully outstretched point straight up and it's wings outstretch. Clearly drying itself off from the water, but it is a humorous pose.

MapTester,
Wow. No wonder you're interested in lights an visibility. Your route looks like you go the gamit of possible road, and bike path conditions. |
I've been just swamped at work, but still commuting and still bring my camera. These shots are from last wednesday on a beautiful fall day. It had been overcast for the last week, so this nice partially sunny day was most welcome. I had to stop to tie off a loose bit of twine and I took a shot in each direction from where I was stopped on the trail.

bah, you guys are so lucky to have nice commutes. My commute is 2.4 miles of city streets and cars. There are a few bike paths here on which to ride, but none of them are in between home and work. Knoxville is my no means a beautiful city. The outskirts are nice, but Knoxville on the whole isn't terribly bicycle friendly. On top of that, virtually none of the roads are flat here. We're in the foothills of the mountains, so everything is hilly in some form or fashion.

i took a few pictures yesterday...
it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute002.jpg and a quiet day downtown: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute004.jpg there are a few road hazards out there, however: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute006.jpg i wanted more pictures of the various expansive views, but it was foggy: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute010.jpg but at the end of the day, the fog had cleared. this is my least favorite part of the journey, the highway overpass where most motorists suddenly feel obliged to indulge their delusions of urgency: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute012.jpg it's nice to feel as though you belong to a group, don't you agree? notice also the enthusiasm for forward motion shown by the motorists to the right; the red light can barely contain them! what do you imagine the cyclist entering stage left is thinking, at this very moment? http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute014.jpg here my frenchie fixie is happy to have made it home again: http://www.provide.net/~klaver/commute016.jpg thanks for looking! next time i may try taking photos while actually riding; if nothing else i'll have something new to post in the "do you guys get hurt" thread on the ss/fixed forum... |
cicadashell, nice!
