It sounds like your locking technique worked fine. Maybe slip the doorman a few extra bucks to keep an eye out on your bike. You can also flirt with the doorman although you may just get a stalker; but your bike would be safe.

Did the doorman not notice someone cutting the cable on your bike? Or was he in the back eating donuts at that time?

To the OP, I am in Philly and used to park my bike in the Bellevue's parking garage--about a block from where you are (enter off of the alley by Applebees on 15th). Tons of people lock up on the lower levels, but I actually used to ride the elevator up to the 7th level and lock up near the car wash (as did a few others) because I was on my way to the gym at the top. I felt very secure up there and only stopped because I stopped going to that gym.

I think you should wrap the cut lock around the doorman's neck.

My co-workers bike was locked in his (open) apartment garage locked to the security ring with a cable lock and a large U-Lock around the cable and attached to the frame/front wheel. The thief(s) simply cut the cable lock and carried the bike away, U-lock and all.

Have you seen that building code in print? Sometimes it specifies delivery people or parking a bike in a lobby.
Although I did work in a building once that banned cyclists from bringing bikes through the lobby because the wheels would get the floor dirty. I watched one morning and counted how many delivery people rolled in their dollys with dirty wheels through the lobby. While they never really got rid of the policy, they did become more lenient when that was pointed out and as long as cyclists didn't linger too long and wear out the welcome.

I tie the cable to the front wheel by looping it through one hole, the other loop goes into the Ulock. The Ulock itself is tied to the bike rack through the saddle tube and back wheel =) Sorry for not being specific =)

Exactly!
The mere PRESENCE of a cable actually draws bike thieves' attention!
That's why I use a U lock, a chain lock, and locking skewers

I'm with chucky... Get an awesome folding bike. No need for locks... and no worries about theft.

If I may, I suggest the bike I have... a Bike Friday Tikit.

Never ask permission to bring bike inside of any building; just do it until you are told differently by someone in authority.
Worked in Tucson and used to park my commuter inside an unused storage closet near the back door entrance.
After several years of doing that was told by a new supervisor that it was 'unsafe' and someone could trip over it (inside an unused closet?).
Parked it outside near loading dock and was told again someone could trip over it and I could only park it at the extreme end of a large parking lot or come to work by car.
Asked if he'd be responsible for theft . . . "no".
There was a shortage of parking spots for cars, so I redesigned the parking lot layout so they could gain 3 additional parking spots, that included a motorcycle/bicycle spot by the back door.
The big boss commended me and the 'supervisor' was a bit red faced.
Get a folding bike, fold it and bring it in without the wheels touching the carpet/ground as 'luggage'.

And lock it right next to a Carbon Fiber bike, hard to beat free theft proof insurance.

Edit: Wait, I own a carbon fiber bike....second thought, bad idea Duh.

What can you do about it?

Insure the bike. Make sure the insurance will cover your bike if stolen from the racks.
