Worked from home yesterday, which was a nice rest day leading up to my 40 mile round trip today, for total commuting mileage this week of 118 miles (I know - for some of you that's a light week -- for me, that's a record week!).

Very humid -- so humid my glasses fogged every time I stopped. Not incredibly warm, but the air felt heavy. Had the odd experience this morning of my phone's GPS adding some phantom miles to my route -- a couple I could clearly see on the map. Usually, if there's a glitch, it would be that it loses signal and drops some miles, but not today.

I usually have Friday off. Today I worked and had light showers on the way. It was humid this afternoon but pleasant. I usually rest up Friday for a Saturday group ride of 35 to 50 miles. Hope I have the energy to make it enjoyable Saturday.

...aaaaand, wet streets from an afternoon rain, but sunshine and lollipops for the trip home. Started raining again the moment I pulled into my driveway. :)

I rode to work all 5 days again this week. It was 100+ degrees every afternoon on the ride home. If that wasn't tough enough, the wind really kicked up yesterday and today. With this afternoon's gusts close to 40 mph, it was a challenge just keeping the bike right side up.

I love riding to work. :)

Hello everyone,

As a newbie Clydesdale commuter, it's been a challenging couple of weeks, especially with the weather being unpredictable and having to take the car for the past few days  , but I finally had the chance to take out my budget commuter bike last night!

Unfortunately, I ran into trouble by something that could never cross my mind... my 12-led flash/bike-light literally overheated and caught fire! I'll be extra careful on my next bike-light purchase since this could have happened while the flashlight was stored in my bag (I have actually found it on -- on several occasions).

Tonight's ride was much more relaxing with no mishaps or fires... a friend also accompanied me while we rode throughout the southern seaside districts in Athens.

My 2nd week in a row commuting to work 1 day per week. 25 miles each way (about 1:30). I leave about 5:45 and need a headlight for about 30 minutes until the sun comes up. We have nice showers and lockers at work, so it is pretty nice. I just need to bring a change of clothes the day before. I'm going to do this at least once per week, and maybe twice when I don't have a weekdend century this summer.

I can't believe how inattentive some drivers are...

Last night, I was almost home. I was on my Surly CrossCheck, around 11:00PM with a 700 lumen Baja Designs lighting my way. I was wearing a reflective vest and have a variety of reflective tape around my bike. A DiNotte 140L was lighting behind me, so I'm sure the pavement had a red glow. This, and the street had scattered street lights. I was approaching a side street and a car approached and stopped. He hesitated, and I thought, great, he's not going to try to speed out in front of me.

But then, suddenly, he lurched forward and started to go. Apparently he hadn't seen me, and my retina-searing 700 lumens in his face didn't grab his attention. I smashed down my Airzound horn and he slammed on his brakes. It was so close by the time he started to go that I couldn't have avoided the collision. Fortunately, the Airzound woke him up.

The kicker - the passenger rolled down the window and yelled at me as I passed. What an idiot!

While I've preemptively used my Airzound hundreds of times, this is the first time it has actually saved me from what I thought was an imminent collision.

Steady rain, but not soaking. I only had to deal with one driver with bad manners this morning. I was going uphill and he blew out of a side street, almost oblivious to how close I was to his door. I stopped, as I don't challenge crazy people in the dark. When he got to the red light, he threw out his platic cup. Dumb people are everywhere.

Another glorious morning ride. Sunny, 56F/13C, no wind. I was thinking on my ride in that tomorrow is it. The longest day of the year. Then it's just the long slide back to... Well... I don't want to think about it.

I drove heavy thunderstorms. It has become such a habit to ride, it just dont feel right driving anymore.

Fizzaly 06-20-11 06:47 AM

48F Nice morning, really glad the winds from yesterday died down, It's already sunny out which is a good sign:)

JohnRichard 06-20-11 06:59 AM

So for our very first commute, it was raining, during a thunderstorm this morning. No fenders, no rain gear, but my roommate did put his work cloths in a plastic zip bag.
I enjoyed it very much. Of course I had to come back home by my self, which was also fine. It's a total of 9.2k round trip, and I came back because we don't work together, I just thought I would give him some company this morning since it was both of our first days in traffic.

I guess if you are gonna start something, it's good to get a little bit of everything bad all at once. The only thing worse would have been rush hour. I LOVED IT!

dcrowell 06-20-11 07:20 AM

I'm baaaaaaaaack!

I rode the 'bent to work today, pretty much pain-free. As long as I'm in a reclining position I'm not in much pain. So I ride the 'bent, and I lean back in my chair at work. I need to buy a recliner for at home. :(

Overcast, cool, and humid describes the weather. It was nice to be on two wheels again. There was another murder along my commute route this morning.

Looks like another scorcher this week in NC, with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s all week. I've gotten so used to riding in the heat and humidity it hardly bothers me now. The morning commute is actually the worst for me because I hate arriving at work drenched in sweat. We have showers, but my cycling clothes are sometimes so wet that they haven't dried out by the end of the day.

My bike felt like new this morning due to a long-overdue drive-train cleaning over the weekend. I thoroughly cleaned and relubed the chain, cranks and derailleurs so they look like new. Amazing how much quieter my bike was this morning. I should do this more often.

groovestew 06-20-11 08:37 AM

Wet. Not what you would call a deluge, but a good honest rain like they get in the PNW. Going uphill at one point, there was enough water running down that I truly felt like a salmon - kept expecting to see big red fish swim past. Got drenched by a car driving through a huge puddle, but by then, it was like spitting on a river anyway. Of course, now 45 minutes after I parked my bike, the rain has all but stopped.

FunkyStickman 06-20-11 08:50 AM

Didn't commute today... still recovering from my 200K brevet this past weekend. It's a great day to ride, though. Dang.

EKW in DC 06-20-11 09:19 AM

Gonna be on an earlier schedule at work the next couple weeks, so today's commute was earlier than I normally ride. Would have expected to see more commuters but the rain kept a lot of people off their bikes today I guess. Had I left at my regular time it would have just been wet roads, b/c the rain all but ended by the time I got to work. Guess I got the tail end of the showers. I'd just as soon see it keep raining all week. That'd be better than the 95 degree predicted for Wed PM.

Brooks saddle and Proofide en route. Should be arriving tomorrow. Plan to condition it overnight tomorrow and start breaking it in with Wednesday's commute! Very excited.

NYCJohn170 06-20-11 09:21 AM

This mornings commute was like the death ride from hell.

The two morans in cars that pulled U turns in front of me fortunately had their windows open so they were able to hear what I thought of them. My words were probably wasted. Stupid people never wake up even when they kill cyclists.

There was the female runner who dashed out from behind a bush across the bike path seeing only the greeen light to cross the highway. One day some one will make a bloody mess of her and bikes will be blamed.

The worst however, was another cyclist. A brainless POS with more legs than brains who decided to go into my lane to pass 2 other cyclists. He picked a moment when a garbage truck was crossing the bike lane so when the truck crossed, he was accelerating in my lane and there I was.

This D-Bag wasn't wearing a helmet. I mention that, because the last time I did a head on with someone in my lane, we did a head butt. I got a Taco'd wheel but the a$$hole that came out of his lane, didn't have a helmet. He had to sit down from the impact with my helmet.

Today, I did a powerslide and the fool escaped. Doubtless he learned nothing. Crapheads never do.

enigmaT120 06-20-11 09:41 AM

I learned that my helmet visor will not keep rain off of my glasses. I'm wearing glasses for a while due to the grass pollen irritating my eyes if I have my contact lenses in. There's not grass pollen in the rain, but it's supposed to be warm and dry today. Meh, I made it, but I missed the pretty views.

abracapocus 06-20-11 10:24 AM

77F and 80%+ humidity when I left this morning. Summer humidity comes with the location, but that's a bit much. There's a house on my route that keeps turkeys. They were all out front this morning so I yelled "turkeys!" to them. One of them answered "gobble!"

Edvin.B 06-20-11 11:50 AM

Had a wonderful, really early commute in today, with really no wind at all. The 4.30 commutes always amazes me, it's so still and quiet outside! It started getting really windy during the day but the wind was in my back on the way home, so it wasn't really a problem.

jyossarian 06-20-11 12:24 PM

Gotta say thanks to the cop that passed me, then pulled over and stopped in the bus lane, forcing me to ride around the driver's side. If it wasn't for you, my commute would've been safe and boring.

Headphones 06-20-11 02:09 PM

Nice early morning and hot afternoon(3PMish). On my way back I was finally able to ride up this hill that was kicking my ass for the last two weeks. Didn't have to walk my bike up it. :)

jdgesus 06-20-11 08:26 PM

since i dont have to commute anymore (working from home) but i do have to run errands around town alot.....

i was riding in a bike lane, separated and everything.... my own private lane.... and i stopped at a light, next to a metro bus.
the guy opens the door and starts yelling at me that i need to get behind him, and if he's in the lane, there isn't a 3rd of the street for me to be there. i was like ?!??!?!
i told him "hey man, i have my own lane here..."
"i can't see you unless you're behind me" he yelled
"how'd you know i was here then?!" and i rode off.

still confused about what he was thinking
