How was the commute today? 2011 Edition.

You know what I just realized? I'm the only commuter in Las Vegas.
It just struck me that I have the street, as far as bicycles anyway, all to myself and I certainly have the MUP all to myself. I literally am the only person I see commuting day in and day out. And I have probably the most perfect commute in that the MUP is in perfect condition, I ride by any services I could ever need or want. The landscaping is beautiful. I have direct access to the bus system for the duration. And I don't have to deal with any cars. This is for 14 miles a day. Where the heck are the commuters in my town?

I have a 450 feet elevation gain in 6.9 miles on the way in. I hardly notice it and I'm at work by 7AM. And of course it is a downhill run all the way home so the 100+ degrees and very dry air are not an uncomfortable experience.
Then again I started commuting in May when it was getting hot. I have the cold commutes of winter yet to experience when my entire commute will be in the dark.

Today I rode my latest bike to work for the first time. I've been psyching myself out worried I would have to leave way earlier b/c it's ss like my previous steed but it's slightly heavier and chromo, AND has 63 GI as opposed to my previous bikes 69.3. I just don't feel as fast on my steel steed, but lo and behold I averaged 16.5 mph today. My best on the aluminum bike was 17.5 avg mph. GREAT SUCCESS!!

Low 60's here. Nice ride. A police officer pulled up by me at a light and asked me what the goof ball in front of us thought he was doing. I think he was checking to see if the guy had cut me off. It was an ambulance that was stopped at a red light kinda sideways half way accross the intersection. There was construction work and I think the EMT driver just got confused where to stop. I said that to the officer and he said OK, have a good morning and drove off. Might have saved him a ticket. That was my one good deed for the day, now I can continue being an ass all day.

Cool for sure, big storms rolled through last night so streets were clean of glass...not sure who goes around breaking glass constantly but I see tons of it.
And another runner, in the bike lane, going the wrong way.

My first "half commute" (I commute 4 miles, then bus in the rest of the way) was better than expected. But, I also learned the commute in is all uphill.

Coolest morning commute in a while with temps in the mid-60s and lower humidity. It was nice getting to work and not being all sweaty for a change. My legs were tired from lots of miles over the weekend, so I took it easy. I was supposed to ride a century Saturday, but it poured rain off-and-on from the very start, so we cut it back to 63 miles. Rode another 30 miles on Sunday to make up for some of the lost mileage.

Starting week 6 of armchair captivity. The natives are getting restless. I may have to resort to cannibalism if I can't get back on a bike soon.
I am commuting vicariously through you all.

OK then. It was an uneventful relaxed 10 miles this morning, mid-60's and I was actually a bit chilled when I got here. I was taking it easy to recover from a long ride on Sunday. Timing was perfect on the right turn on the tightest stretch so I got all the way to my next left ahead of the traffic.
I see half a dozen bicycle commuters on my regular route these days, noteworthy because I might have seen that many total in my first two years of commuting on that section.

In case you missed it...
It was a beautiful morning for a bike commute...59 degrees and no wind. I took some photos and discovered they don't come out too well if it's too dark or I don't stop to take the picture.
Here's the first peek of sun...
and some Sandhill Cranes...
Finally my bike tucked away for the day...
Enjoy!

I'm a poor excuse for a cyclist. Today is my first day back at work after two weeks of holidays, during which I didn't ride at all, save for a couple of short errands near the beginning of my break, and a 200 km brevet this past Saturday. Shame on me! But I had a really nice time off with my family.
During my holidays, about a week and a half ago, construction crews ground off a layer of pavement on a 3/4 mile section of road that I commute on. I was more than happy to see that, since that stretch had some of the worst potholes on my whole commute. I was looking forward to starting my commute again on glimmering new pavement. Alas, construction moves slowly around here, and there's no new pavement to be seen. So, I'll be taking a 1/2 mile detour for the time being. Commute was very nice this morning, about 11C, no wind, a little gray. Nice to be back on the bike. It'll help provide some joy to what's looking like a miserable few weeks of work ahead.

Here is my official first post in this thread. Don't know why I didn't start doing this a long time ago. 5.7 miles of this:

I passed some wild turkeys and a ton of geese this morning too. Have also been seeing a lot of pheasants.

Nice pics fj29er! The other guy always seems to have a better commute, and you're that guy today for me.
I had the first "normal" commute in about a month, and it was great. Nice weather, and nice that all the other drama that kept me from riding has died down enough to resume commuting.

Nice ride in this morning. Cool after last night's rain. Awoke to see that metro was flooded and service between Braddock Rd and the airport was only via emergency shuttle busses. Oh the times I'm glad I don't have to worry about things like that!
I did worry that said flooding was along my commute route, but it wasn't. Had alternate route ready to go, but Four Mile Run was nowhere near flood stage so I just kept to my normal route.
No highs above 90 in this week's forecast. That's nice to see!

This morning was in the 70's and not too wet, nice and breezy.
Somehow managed to catch every major street crossing just right and didn't have to cross once.

Today
Beautiful commute today. 65 degrees, unusually cool for August, but the air felt crisp this morning and it makes me want fall weather even more.
My boyfriend, who lives in an apartment next to mine, and I are riding bikes to school/work now. This was our first day to do it, instead of walking. Walking takes around 30 minutes. We are both doctoral students and we really don't have money for parking passes, and I don't even have a car.
He has my old (it was too tall for me) Raleigh Marathon road bike and I have a new-to-me Brittany Free Spirit. The Brittany is heavier than heck. As he was zipping ahead of me today, I was a little jealous. But it was nice to have him wait for me at the top of a hill, cheering me on: "COME ON, JUST A LITTLE FARTHER!" I also was carrying lots of stuff on my bike...ah well.
We rode home just now and he and I were having such a great time that we kept riding right past our apartments. We rode an extra few miles around the neighborhood. It was so fun to have him beside me as we careened through the side streets. I feel lucky to be dating a guy who wants to go to work on a bike with me! I think we will have great success this fall going to school on bikes. I just have to persuade him to buy fenders...I know he'll want them when it rains!
