Should I think about getting a new helmet?
I wear a blaze orange Bell Metro, which was made in 2007. I've never dropped it on a hard surface, or taken a hit, but it's seen a lot of UV and sweat exposure.
I've read that helmets deteriorate over time. Unfortunately, Bell has chosen to discontinue the Metro, and I have several snap on Metro rain covers(which is a great idea as they don't cover up the rear blinkie). Bell offers the Muni, but it doesn't appear to be backward compatible with Metro accessories----stupid!
So, should I trust this helmet with the miles and wear on it?

5 years from date of manufacture is the rule in sanctioned sports. While it'll last longer even by that conservative rule you're still good for another year.

I went through the same thought process recently. almost dropped $120 on a Bell Volt, but decided that my Specialized AirForce 3 was fine except for the padding.
so I bought a HeadSweats thingy for $20. solved my helmet hair as well

Get a new helmet if you think the manufacturer needs the case worse than you do, or when it starts cracking and gets uncomfortable. Don't leave the styrofoam up when you leave the helmet outside; that's the only thing to worry about.

In the event that there is no drop and no crash, I use a 3-5 year rule on replacing helmets.

I'd keep the Metro, but then my newest helmet was bought in '93.
