5 Minutes of My Commute From 6/15/2011

This is 5 minutes of my commute yesterday. At the very beginning, I was signalling with my left arm a lane change to get out of the lane that enters the highway. Four vehicles go right by me and don't let me change lanes. Finally the 5th let me change lanes.

At the 2:06 mark, I was sure I was going to be hit by or slam into a pickup truck as one was making a left and the other just started pulling out. Luckily they both saw me and stopped. I ride with my lights on and other visibility enhancers, even during bright daylight for this reason. Later there is a guy that moves car into the bike lane blocking it so I have to go around him by going into the car lane.

The streets in my city, even with dedicated bicycle lanes, are not very safe because of such bad drivers.

nice video, minus the crazy drivers. I plan on doing something similar. What bike are you riding - you seemed to have a good pace going? What is your camera setup?

I love your city's bike lane. I live in Korea and if you think it's dangerous in your city, then riding on streets here would give you a heart attack.

Looks like you were really hauling after leaving the first light!

Thank you for the replies.

The bike is a Bottechia CF 67 Pro. It is an eBay carbon road bicycle. I have been very happy with it.

My helmet cam is a Drift 170 Stealth. It looks like I need to adjust the angle of it since it is canted slightly to the right. I really like that helmet cam. It is very user friendly.

I was doing 30 mph after that first light. That was on a freeway overpass, so I was going downhill. I was doing about 25 mph going through the 2nd light and 20 mph the rest of the video.

My commute is 16 miles each way for a total of 32 miles. That video is of the most dangerous part of my commute. The rest is on dedicated bicycle paths, and a lot of residential streets. There is one more stretch of about 1.5 miles of busy street, but the side streets are traffic light controlled so there are not as many crazy drivers entering and exiting.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. Looked as if you came close to getting taking out a couple of times, I bet the lights help.

I agree. If that's the most dangerous part of your commute then you got a pretty sweet route.

From the freeway marker it looks like you are in the South Bay area of SF... I don't know what it is about drivers up your way but they seem to be the most consistently self centered clueless rude and arrogant of every city I have been in.

Nice vid - thanks for posting it. I love to see others' routes.

I noticed the bike lane is essentially along the curb. I couldn't tell from the video, but unless the asphalt/concrete joint is really smooth, it can be a sketchy zone to ride. With that, the bike lane is essentially a 1-2' strip to the right of the line.

I agree with others - it looks like you have a very reasonable commute.

Mine is not too far off of yours, but is a little more urban, and the 1-2 miles near where I work can be hectic.

Oh, and +100 for running daytime blinkies front and back.

In your video, the two cars who started to pull out and stopped (in the bike lane, sadly) likely did so because of seeing the blinking lights. Either of these instances could easily have been T-Bone collisions (you T-boning the vehicle), which is no fun.

Those bike lanes are pure luxury. Half of my morning commute is on streets that become 2-lane during rush hour and 1 lane with parking at other times. This means that when it's two lanes, there's no shoulder at all and the only way to do it is take the right lane with angry, late commuters stacked up behind me.

The camera thing is pretty cool.

That was neat watching a fellow commuter in action. The camera looks pretty good in HD too. Hmmm, might have to pickup one of these things (damn you OP!).

Side note: I always wear a high-vis vest ($7 from Harbor Freight) when on the bike vs. daytime blinkies.

I like your bike lanes. We don't really have any around here, and usually there are no shoulders either (the road just goes directly into a curb and then sidewalk).

Your commute doesn't look that bad. It is silly that people don't pay attention to bikes, especially when they can see a dedicated bike lane next to them.

That said I have had WAY more close calls so far on my suburban commute to my summer job than I did all last year riding in an urban area. I've had 10-12 close calls in suburbia in eight rides thus far. In twenty weeks of urban riding, riding 3-6 times per week I had three close calls. Neither area has bike lanes, and the urban situation didn't have any sort of shoulder, whereas the suburban shoulders are four to six feet wide in places.

Bike Lanes? That is an unknown quantity here. In smalltown America you can forget a bike lane most of the time. I only have a shoulder to ride on when on the US highway going to work. That's about ten percent of the routes I take. No MUP or rail to trail. I still get crazy drivers. This was a typical vid of brain dead drivers. But I missed the ones like I see that do a slight hesitation at the corner then turn, no signal, cell phone in one ear.
