Who's going to Critical Mass tonight...?

Politics aside, it's fun to do a social ride with lots of other cyclists, especially different types of cyclists. There are tall bikes, BMXs, fixies, hard core commuters, and a handful of racers, all with different ideas about cycling and different approaches to our hobby/pastime/sport/whatever you'd like to call it. In the summer there are a lot of people with beer in their cages and chips on their shoulders, but as the nights get longer, the group tends to thin out a little and calm down ... so tonight should be a pretty relaxed ride.

It's a no drop ride, which means pretty slow, and at least in Seattle, routes are chosen (on the spot) for their scenery, until the ride ends at a nice park somewhere and turns into a big social gathering.

Who does this ride regularly, and who's going to check it out and see what it's about?

I always thought that routes were chosen with an eye toward inconveniencing as many non-bikers as possible?

I won't be there for sure.

Bikes: See my sig...

Our CM ride is pretty relaxing and courteous although it has taken some work to convince certain regulars that yes, we yield to buses and do not block the entire roadway as to allow motorists to pass us.

Only exception to this is when we cross the bridge which is narrow two lanes and if the group is very large we take both lanes.

The only way to know is to go find out - participate in the route deciding process. Or, I guess, there's always making up your own answers and being satisfied with them.

No thanks, I have already seen all I need to see about CM on the 5:00 news...and unfortunately so has everyone else. I've always enjoyed your posts and you come across as a responsible person so I'll take you at your word that CM is different these days. But unfortunately the damage to the reputation of ALL cyclists has already been done and it will take a long, long time to heal. For that reason, I want nothing to do with it. Maybe CM should think abut changing it's name to separate from the past?

I do hope you have a good time and a safe ride.

I once got caught up in a CM ride in Portland, Oregon when I was riding home from work. The group was travelling no more than 10 mph. I just wanted to pass them and get home. It was as annoying to get through that crowd on a bike as I imagine it would be in a car. That was my first and only CM experience, and it was completely unintentional.
