Bike light/cycle computer interference?

I recently got a new, more powerful light for my bike (Nite Rider MiNewt 350), and quickly noticed that whenever the light is on, my wireless cycle computer stops recording mileage or speed. It just goes into a kind of petit mal seizure. When I turn the light off, the cycle computer "wakes up" and functions normally again. Is this a common problem with more powerful bicycle lights? It never happened when I used a $30 Cateye light. More to the point, what's a reasonable solution, other than getting a wired cycle computer? I kind of like not having many wires on the bike.

Common problem. Try relocating the speedo. In extreme cases, you might have to opt for a wired model (that's what I did).

Digital wireless also doesn't have the problem. My older Blackburn Delphis went crazy with the lights, my new Blackburn Neuros (2.4 GHz digital) don't. CatEye also makes a fairly inexpensive 2.4 GHz digital wireless.

I had the same problem with my wireless computer when I installed a more power LED light (Magicshine). The only way I was able to solve the problem was to install a new wired computer on my commuter bike. I'm now commuting on several different bikes, two of which have wireless computers, using a different headlight (Light & Motion Stella 300), and have no interference problems. So, it depends on the light as well as the computer. I have also noticed that traffic signals will cause strange readings on some of my wireless computers -- like showing a maximum speed of 100 mph.

I use a powerful Dinotte headlight and have the same problem. I was able to remedy the computer problem by locating the light on the front of my front rack, thereby getting it as far from the computer as possible. May not work in your situation with your current set up. This year, I took my front rack off and couldn't get the light far enough away from the computer for it to work, so am using a less powerful light that doesn't confuse the computer.

If my light is on flash or running at a lower power setting, the circuitry in the light causes RF interference with my computer. Try running in steady mode at full power and see if the problem goes away. Otherwise, moving things around or getting a wired computer should solve the problem.

I use a Dinotte 600L right next to a Garmin 705 and have never had a problem.
