Cold! When I checked my thermometer it read 36F. No problem, I dressed for that weather… I didn’t account for the 19mph NW wind… Nor did I account for the temperature to drop (according to accuweather) 7 degrees from the time I check till the time I left. Accuweather had the temp at 27F.

As I turned the corner out of the woods I was hit by the cold wind. I thought my face was going to freeze off! A long two miles later I turned and the wind was basically at my back. I made good time but I never really warmed up.

SaskCyclist 11-23-04 08:41 AM

The weather network says it is -11C which feels like -17C with wind. I suppose it would be a little colder going against the wind. I really have been enjoying the bike lately. I must be a fairly sadistic person though because I really enjoy seeing cagers outside scraping frost and having trouble starting their cars. I want to just yell at them to get out of the car and on their bike but then I would just look like a freak. Who am I kidding, like I don't already with blinkies all over the place, full face balaclava and reflective gear. A co-worker said I looked like "Darth Vader".

Cheers.

here in michigan it's not yet sub-zero like it is in saskatchewan (or minnesota), so i'm still in shorts most days. today it's all 40s and grey and damp, very novemberish in appearance but still quite mild. considering getting studded tires before the ice hits. they do make them in 27", do they not?

I was a little slow waking this morning after tipping back a few ales. I gave myself an extra 10 minutes or so for the ride in figuring i'd be traveling at a more pedestrian pace...Beautiful morning, cool enough (low 30's?) to leave my gloves on, little traffic, pale blue sky, frost...I'm planning on leaving earlier everyday to extend the commute.

Foggy. Nice. The Potmac River is quite beautiful in the fog.

caloso 11-23-04 10:55 AM

Cold for us (40F) but probably shirtsleeve weather for our hardcore winter commuters. Late leaving the house this morning but made up some serious time by sitting behind an Explorer on 21st Street. Who says SUVs are all bad?

Stubacca 11-23-04 11:16 AM

Ride home yesterday felt great. Temp was around 45F (7C) when I started, and down to a bit under 40F (4C) by the time I got home. I had great energy in the legs, so made it home in very good time.

27F (-3C) on the ride in this morning. It warmed a little as I rode in, so I probably could have taken off my light fleece layer. My new commute route has been working out really well, particularly in the mornings. In the evenings, riding on one of the busier roads can feel a little bit hairy. Even though it is three lanes each way and the traffic isn't all that heavy, it seems most driver's just can't cope with not being able to fully use the right hand lane.

Snowing now, and I'm heading out for drinks this afternoon with a friend who's visiting from Australia, so no ride home this afternoon.

Our weather reports are always true - a few days late. I was told to expect rain and freezing temps this morning, but instead it was a positively balmy 44*F, with very little wind, and a bright blue sky overhead. The lake was calm and green.

Many thanks to the unknown gentleman cyclist who stopped to ask me if I needed help when he saw me pulled over onto the edge of the bike path. I was just readjusting a cranky pannier, but it was the thought that counted. Bike people are good people. :)

Here, too! I don't see any rain or snow, do you? From where I'm sitting, I see sunny blue skies.

I keep wondering if I'm going to be able to handle biking through a Chicago winter; I'd really like to know. But now, I'm also kind of wondering if I'm ever going to get to find out! :)

Same here (Montreal, Canada), the colder it got was -6C, and we didn't see any snow (flurries one day, but they melted on the flooor)

I too, am wondering if I will be able to handle winter, and so far it hasn't shown itself. I'm really woried that it will get cold and snowy all of a sudden, and I won't have time to adapt slowly.

Twas a good ride in. A little damp but now its beautiful and can't wait to get on my bike and take "the long way" home. Ah what a gorgeous day. Its supposed to snow tomorrow. I'm happy to get another day in before it hits.

Merryish 11-23-04 05:12 PM

This is going to be a very dark ride home. I just hope it's not raining yet (left the waterproofing on the wrong side of the trip).

Tree Trunk, if it rains or snows tomorrow, be safe! I'll be on a plane to Louisiana, where it may rain but it certainly won't snow. My next commute: Monday morning.

Gnight, all!

No rain but overcast & 48F at 6:30 AM today. I had some shoulder pain last night so I slept in a bit this morning & went in to work 1/2 hour later. It was still quite dark and I had much more traffic to contend with. Made it to work in my usual time & was impressed by the courteous drivers I encountered. On my commute home at lunch time, I was pleased to note the City of Olympia had run a street sweeper & the bike lane was much cleaner. I have errands to run tomorrow & need to drop my dogs off at the kennel for the holidays so I may drive. Looking forward to Thanksgiving in Salem with the kids & Grandkids . Don

Nice ride to work & home .It feels like it warmed up today . Have a good nite .

Had a good night ride home last night in the dark. 15MPH wind at my back. Saw one cat on the trail.

This morning it was raining and that wind was now a headwind. Had to push to keep the speed up. Good ride though, and it only rained for a minute or two.

chewa 11-24-04 07:28 AM

Edinburgh was grey and misty this morning, but weather mild and a slight tailwind made the trip shorter than normal.

jharte 11-24-04 07:59 AM

Wow what a wild ride! It snowed 2-4 inches last night. This is the first snow in Kansas City this year. Of course I rode in. It's a tradition around here where I work. I always ride in, especially if it snows. People I've worked with for 7 years still shake their heads. However, there were some things I forgot from last year:
1) People who drive and talk on the phone when the roads are dry...STILL CAN"T DRIVE!
2) Hot coffee still freezes.
3) Cameras don't like the cold. I was able to get one pic before my camera locked up.
4) Anti fog glasses will fog up at the precise moment you hit a rut in the snow.
5) Most of all, I forgot how much fun it is to ride in the snow!

Warm & damp morning commute. Roads were pretty wet and I didn't see the shattered beer bottle until too late. Immediately heard the rotating hiss at the front tire. Luckily I was only about a mile from my office & managed to make it there before it went completely flat. Patched it up and now waiting for the afternoon ride home in the predicted thunderstorms. Is it just me it does it seem like there is a lot more broken glass on the roadways lately?

cicadashell 11-24-04 08:35 AM

40 °F, blustery and a steady rain...i guess i am officially not a fair-weather commuter! and for those of you in the pacific northwest (or anywhere else) who put with this sort of weather all the time, i give you your propers. have a good holiday!

SaskCyclist 11-24-04 09:01 AM

It was a good ride today; -6C with a light dusting of snow. Overall very uneventful.

mjw16 11-24-04 09:17 AM

Drizzle and fog this morning, but the temps were comfortable, in the low 50's. Left a little later that usual and didn't even try to make up the time, just enjoyed the ride. Saw a few joggers and only one rider, if last year is any indication, I'll see fewer and fewer riders as the weather worsens. My new 700 x 35's do well in the wet and I felt fairly confident on the fallen leaves too.

PaulH 11-24-04 09:46 AM

Drizzle and 53 F / 13 C this morning. I wore my rain gear just in case, but left the coat unbuttoned. I didn't see any other bikes on the road; to be fair, I should note that I saw few automobiles as well. School is out and most people seem to be getting an early start on our Thanksgiving holiday.

A lovely day in St Louis! 40's, rain, driving gusty wind out of the north. My morning commute is to the north so at least it wasn't a crosswind. St Louis is pretty hilly so only a few gusty spots where the rain felt like frozen peas pelting against my masked face. I made several mistakes in clothing. Forgot my shoe covers so my shoes and socks were soaked, but fortunately wore heaviest wool socks so toes were not frozen solid. Thin spandex head mask so face was wet and cold. Need to break out the winter gear. Poly long sleeve shirt with gortex shell kept body warm, but I was soaked to the bone. Warm shower was great. But my clothes will be all wet for tonight's ride back, arg.

I heard on the radio this morning that snow is expected this afternoon . . . so that confirmed that I would bike in. I do NOT want to be caught on the highways in St Louis in a car. These drivers are CRAZY in the snow. It is great biking in a wet snow, with no ice. There will be car accidents left and right, blocking up all the roads, and I will be able to putter by on the sidewalk or side streets. Looking forward to it.
