Mid 40Fs. Crisp, blue sky. Annoying headwind. My legs didn't feel very strong this morning. Felt like I was dragging an anchor.

Second day of a cold.
Second day of no biking.
Stupid cold and no biking make Mr_H something something.

It must owl season already. I was totally jolted by the creepy wail of a screech owl, formerly known as a wtf-is-that-a-friggin-ghost, along an inky black country road around 6am. Thanks to visits to the local nature center with my son, this animal has been recently demoted from the supernatural.

Otherwise, perfect weather! 56F, no fog, clear skies. Almost no sweat. Made record time. Maybe the last perfect ride of the year?

dalmore 09-27-06 07:29 AM

Fun ride this morning. No incidents of any sort. lots of curbing hopping on the hardtial too. WHEEEE!!

Picked up the perfromance bike version of the nitehawk emitter headlight on clearance at my local store. light output is about the same as my Princeton Tec EOS which seem to break off the clip everytime I drop one. I think I'll keep it around for a backup light but I was a little disappointed that it was not brighter. Hopefully my jet lite phatom will arrive today ...

DataJunkie 09-27-06 07:31 AM

Took the short route in today like last wed. OMG!
I remember last year when this was a long route. 15 miles is much shorter than 28. duh

LordBass 09-27-06 07:34 AM

About 40*F this morning. Brrr. Plenty warm under my wind jacket once the fires light up. Zero other bikers this morning, but I don't usually see many. Supposed to be near 70 this afternoon. Bright and sunny. Perfect days.

What a great week for commuting it has been so far. Nice and cool mornings in the low to mid 50s. Yesterady on my way to work I caught up to another commuter at a red light and we said good morning and talked for a little bit about where we were going. Then last night on my way home I caught up to another commuter (woman this time) at a red light and said hello to her as well. I normally don't see many commuters on my route so this was a nice surprise. This morning on my way through the golf course the fog was rising off the grass and lakes and with the sun coming up it was a great sight to see. Looks like today will be my last day riding this week though since my gf's parents are flying in tomorrow and I will be picking them up from the airport. Friday I will probably have to drive to pick up my gf at work since her parents will have her car and she can't drive my car since it's stick :( I will reach my upper goal of 200 miles this month this afternoon though so at least that's a good thing for the month :)

RonH 09-27-06 08:03 AM

51F (11C) when I left the house. Felt cool so I donned the arm warmers, knee warmers, vest, and full finger gloves. Felt good for the first 5 miles. Then I had to unzip. By the time I got to work I was warm. Still cooling down with my small fan. :) I'll go take my sink bath shortly.

I was at an intersection and some yahoo behind me driving a lunch wagon kept revving the truck's engine. Once the light changed he started doing it again because I couldn't pull away from the intersection as fast as a car. A bus was stopped to pick up passengers about 1/2 block ahead. This idiot tried to pass me, but when he saw that I was moving left to pass the bus, he changed his mind and slowed down. I don't know if it was because I had been taking the lane or because there were pedestrians crossing the street. Anyway, I pulled away and never saw him again and I hope our paths don't cross in the future. :crash:

I don't know if this ride counts as a commute: I do it once a week to the local Humane Society to volunteer there. It's sorta like a job, right?..

So the ride in was pretty slow due to construction and the fact that my route passed through two university campuses just as the majority of students were getting out of their classes for the day... Traffic was pretty backed up; I was glad I was using bike-laned streets to whip right by half-mile long traffic jams. The ride back, however, was fantastic! Little traffic, cool but not yet freezing temps... Even though it was mostly uphill, it was just so damn fast and smooth! I stopped by a liquor store to get some beer and they even let me roll the bike right in. :)

I also stopped by an electronics store to pick up a mouse - and it's the second bloody time I get called "sir" in that store (doesn't correspond to my gender...). I guess short hair, bike garb (no lycra though) and especially the alpha dog expression that takes a few minutes to get erased from my face after I leave traffic make it easy for people to mistake me for a man, and a macho one at that.

Looked up commute in the dictionary, and it essentially said a commute was travel performed by a commuter. Looked that one up, and it said "Individual who frequently travels between two places.". Once per week sounds like "frequent" to me.

Interesting ride today. I thought I was over the embarrasing stuff, but i forgot to unclip at an intersection in Chinatown this morning, and down i went, got some weird looks from the locals. More seriously, I was threading my way through traffic on 3rd Ave in midtown (NY) and I got sideswiped by a van, he just kissed me, and I saw it happening too late, but I got a hand out and pushed off, kept going, spoke to him at the light, he asked if I was ok. Thing is, I consider it my fault, since it's up to me not to get myself killed if I'm gonna ride in traffic. I got a lot to learn. I was soaked with sweat when i got to work, fear, not exhaustion. At 55, maybe I'm too old for this ****.

caloso 09-27-06 09:54 AM

I'd spent an hour last evening swapping a cartridge BB into the Bomber (I don't know why anyone would mess with an old-style bottom bracket anymore). I thought I'd be trailering the kids to daycare this morning, but my son slept later than I expected so my wife volunteered to drive them in as usual. And instead of the Bomber, I rode the Racer. Nice ride in, and fast.

saraflux 09-27-06 10:43 AM

the cooler it gets, the happier i am.
it was around 60*F and no wind...
nice nice nice.
i broke 800 miles yesterday. i am really happy with how the car-free life is treating me so far.
i LOVE fall.

Yay - I'm officially a commuter despite lack of a full-time job that requires commuting! :)

HardyWeinberg 09-27-06 11:52 AM

Another perfect riding day. 8 days into my new schedule, and I finally had my system disrupted; I forgot to pack underwear.

There was a kind of spectacular fatal car accident essentially right on the bike trail this weekend (car blew through stop sign, no hint of braking, jumped curb, flew over the overpass, flipped in mid-air, landed upsidedown on I-5 20-30' below). People have been putting more and more stuff on the overpass barrier in memory of the passenger who died instantly. The driver's apparently getting better up in Seattle. There are investigation spray paint marks up the road the trail parallels, but I don't know what they're marking, there is no hint of braking attempts that I can see.

his fault, not your responsability to not get yourself killed in "this traffic" afterall, you are traffic so you have the same right to life....

youre never too old.

Oh man the commute sucks at the moment, the tube/ underground / "metro" is so crowded, its still fairly warm so theres a lot of BO and I'm gagging to get out riding again. Theres a complicated reason why I cant ride that no-one would understand so I cant be bothered to explain.

huhenio 09-27-06 03:34 PM

well .. I am still riding the motorcycle due my 70+ mile roundrtip commute. I keep waving to the few and the proud who brave traffic on pedal power. I am as jelaous as hell. It was a beautiful summer, and now the fall is yet more inviting than ever.

I am selling the cage and I will keep riding on two wheels at a time for the time given

Rode in was nice and easy. Since I am a newbie, I had a question popped up. Who is supposed to cover insurance for my biking?

AFAIK your own health insurance if you're the only party to an accident, the car insurance of any car that happens to hit you. PIP, I think it's acronymed.

tokolosh 09-27-06 09:31 PM

don't know what i did to my right knee but it must have been good cause it was pretty hurty all the way home. i rediscovered the granny gear and took it very easy because i still have 2 days to go this week. i need to do something about that car.

buzzman 09-27-06 10:02 PM

my ride in was great today on the folder. Got notice my new drive train components are on the way but after tuning up the folding bike I'm starting to like the way it rides. It's much lighter than the big old clunky commuter. The regular commuter is such a work horse in comparison.

Ride home was nice, too.

Thanks HardyWeinberg. I appreciate it.

Nice ride today. I didn't work this weekend. Monday I didn't ride since I was working on stuff at home and lost track of time so I had to drive to make it on time. Tuesday was another day off, so I was dying to get back on the bike. I took some time yesterday to do some adjustment on my front deraileur and ended up cleaning my entire drive train. All in all, nice ride both ways. I guess the bike gods were on my side today :)

dalmore 09-28-06 06:09 AM

Back in my cage today :( - Last nights ride home was a great one. Saw an interesting new bumper sticker that will be appearing in my signature soon.

Fell in behind a roadie who seemed appalled that I dare speak to him - he responding only with a hand signal indicating for me to pass on the left. You just meet the friendlist people at times. Of course he then picked up his pace to one that I could match but not pass. I laid back about 15 feet and just to his left so my mountain bike would constantly be in his mirror. hehe!!

He did have a nice jersey though it was a picture of a jersey cow on the jersey. Quite clever.

saraflux 09-28-06 06:18 AM

gorgeous weather!!!
i swear, the cooler it gets, the nicer the drivers are. (now that i said that i'm sure that i have jinxed myself  ) i had two different people let me into the left lane when i needed it, and no close passes this morning. i must be getting faster- people don't have to slow down as much to let me in.
took the last stretch kinda slow. man are my legs sore the last couple days...
i'm glad i have the weekend off to rest up.
monday morning will be the fastest ride ever!:p

Mr_H 09-28-06 06:47 AM

First day commuting in two days (stupid cold). Felt nice and good to be out there again :)
Relaxing commute, somewhat chilly though. Summer is definitly gone.

deedubya 09-28-06 07:07 AM

Got unexpected rain this morning. Unexpected since I did not check the forecast. That said, if I had checked the forecast, I don't know if I would have taken the bike, the car, or the subway this morning. So I'm a bit damp here at work, but I got some exercise, so I suppose it's worth it.

ModoVincere 09-28-06 07:16 AM

First ride this week for me. I'm still fightiing a stupid cold, and starting to wonder if its turning into bornchitis.

Had to take my cage to the shop this morning, so I loaded the Wally World mountain bike on the trunk rack and drove to the shop. Loaded up the bike with panniers, a bottle of Dasani water (forgot my normal water bottle), and away I went. Saw two other commuters, both on road bikes and not very freindly.

It felt kind of nice to be outside this morning.

GTcommuter 09-28-06 07:21 AM

Nothing much to say. Cool weather, not much traffic.
