In a few weeks the trail will be full of skiers (including me), but I'll still be riding w/ my studs.

welcome to the group. sounds like you're riding in a fascinating area. Alaska? Canada? Where? Send some pics of this gorgeous ride of yours.

My ride today was the streets route and not the bikepath but it was pleasant, though a bit damp this morning. It was also the shorter ride. But I'll have ridden every day this week so it's nice to curtail the amount of mileage on the weekends.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I love his thread. I like reading the posts. Also, I think I notice things on my commute more, because I'm thinking, "What can I write in the Commute thread about today?"

Friday, I left work a few minutes early because the weather map showed a storm coming. Unfortunately, my plan failed and I got drenched! I was wearing a little red rain jacket my sister gave me last spring. Surprisingly, I was totally soaked everywhere, except that my arms and torso were bone dry when I got home.

welcome back Roody.

My ride today was, again, the short commute (about 12m RT instead of my usual 22 RT). My chain and freewheel are needing replacement they are starting to skip and jump. They've been on this bike for about a year and a half, which means they've got about 7500 miles on them- not bad for a chain and freewheel. My bike is a 9 speed though and I've noticed I burn through front chainrings a little faster (since there's only one of them instead of 2 or 3) so I hope I don't need to replace that too.

Rode home in a blustery spitting rain but barely got wet and the skies cleared about a mile before home to a stunning autumnal sky.

First time ride this morning. 11.3 miles, last three were foggy. About 49F. Pretty good ride. I rode it several times on the weekend previously. I am shooting for two times a week - at least until my son is done with soccer (he has it right after I get off work). Felt pretty good. Cooling down now.

vtjim 09-25-06 06:11 AM

50F this morning, mostly overcast. Light wind. Lots of squirrels, and one domestic cat. :) Waterfowl: One great blue heron. One cormorant. Many seagulls.

Mugsy Malone 09-25-06 06:41 AM

Brr! 48F when I left this morning, and I was underdressed (shorts, dryfit shirt, and windbreaker). However, after about three miles I didn't notice anymore. I definitely need to start getting a little bit of warmer commuting clothing for these chilly Chicago mornings.

Supposed to be 70F and sunny this afternoon though.

Hm. Got a "page not found" from Flickr on that link. What's the name of the group? Is it this one?

nice ride today. Got to chat with a fellow bike commuter. We decided every day was a great day for a ride.

Summer hasn't quite given up it's grip on our city yet. Today was warm (not hot) and humid (but not muggy). I'm anticipating cooler days, but still enjoying the last days of summer.

And got to meet another BF member by chance this weekend. Very cool bike, Allen.

jyossarian 09-25-06 07:14 AM

Took a break from riding yesterday to give my legs some rest and they appreciated it this morning. Topped the small hill near the beginning of my commute, the lights turned green and I blasted down the street leaving traffic in my wake. Good thing I've been using the beater mtb lately cuz I hit a gravelly stretch of road awaiting re-paving at over 20 mph. It scrubbed some speed but I kept up the pace for a 1/2 mile. Somewhere during all that, I hit a bump hard enough to make my seat tilt backwards. :o I think maybe it's time for a new seatpost.

Mr_H 09-25-06 07:19 AM

Yet another cold morning, about 40 degrees. I threw on the windbreaker pants for this trip. And this morning was the first time I got to try out my skullcap, which made a pretty big difference. Although, it doesn't help that I'm already coming down with something.

Nice, gentle commute though:)

saraflux 09-25-06 07:22 AM

nice weather (mid to high 60's), didn't see anyone else on a bike.
i think i need to switch up my route. this one is getting pretty routine.
the new bike makes it better though. :D

mwrobe1 09-25-06 07:25 AM

A bit cool this morning...I'm still sporting shorts, but a long sleeve shirt, full gloves, plus a helmet kept me plenty warm. Should be a pleasant 72 on the way home. I only went halfway and carpooled. Tomorrow I'll go all the way. A full week of quitting smoking has improved my time and average speed, and endurance...8.5 miles seems like nothing now. I definitely need a new bike come springtime...I got no more gear. I'm maxing the thing out pretty easily...and its only "giving me" 20-21mph.

ModoVincere 09-25-06 07:36 AM

No bicycle commute for me today . I sat at NY's Laguardia, in the plane for 4 freakin hours last night waiting for the plane to back out of the gate. Some BS about weather in Atlanta, the Atlanta Radar wen t down, their resurfacing one of the runways in atlanta..etc. I can't even remember all the excuses.
So..I got home last nigt (or really this morning ) at 2:00 am. 7:30 means get up and get the kid ready for school.

I need more sleep.

GT, what part of Decatur were you riding through? It was too cool for my sandals :( and I wore a heavier s/s jersey. Brought the arm warmers just in case.

I hadn't ridden since last Monday :o and my legs and lungs let me know it. :stupid me:

GT -- Mike (Intown Bicycles) caught up with me at Oxford Rd and N. Decatur Rd and told me about the conversation you two had last Friday. No, he didn't hug me. :)

Must have been colder up on the north side of town. I wasn't chilly at all this morning. Maybe I woke up on the warmer side of the bed.

Yea, your name came up in the shop on Friday and I was sympathizing with your rant from the otherday.

About 49 deg F this morning. Dark clouds towards Lake Ontario but otherwise nice. Mynew bike is still without a rack so I rode the anvil. Added a second battery-powered light and that was a good thing as the batteries on my main light died after six miles or so.

I'm loving this! I'll ride through the Fall and Winter for as long as I can, if not through it all.

Chilly this morning. I layered up, but nothing really very wind-breaking so it was cold going. Not so much as to give in, or feel like I was suffering. I was only on the commute for an hour anyways and it'll be a little warmer on the way back this afternoon. Just gotta remember to wear a jacket next time to cut the blow-through.

Nyrome 09-25-06 11:31 AM

i haven't posted in a while, so i thought to come back and let y'all know how i've been doing on my 17mile/day commute through northwest atlanta. i am so much stronger now that i've been doing this for four months. i am maintaining my ride in the upper seven speeds (of the three cogs) and have found that even the top "speed" isn't enough in some places. i bought a used jamis coda this august.

i just came back from a week long cruise in the bahamas, so after all of that food and basically lounging around (actually we did do some work - sea kayaking and shopping really tuckers you out!) so i thought that maybe the ride would be tough - absolutely not my friend! piece of cake! HOWever...

i may need to invest in some long sleeve windbreaker and pants for the cool autumn months.

I hauled the twins to daycare this morning in their Chariot. We took a more circuitous route to avoid the downtown traffic. It has the nice advantage of taking us through Old Town and past the Amtrak station so we had some fun things to look at on the ride in. My legs were a little heavy after a hard group ride on Saturday and a 5K race on Sunday, but it's no big deal.

HardyWeinberg 09-25-06 11:39 AM

Gorgeous morning today. Only 4 bikes at the grade school rack this am. 2 were locked, only 1 had training wheels (my son's). Pretty normal trip from there to work. I detoured to the ATM on what I'm told is the worst bike street in town, and it wasn't great, that's for sure, but no incidents.

MyPC8MyBrain 09-25-06 01:30 PM

Friday night's ride home was ick-o-rama... Rain, cold, slushy ice balls falling from the sky, cold, windy and cold. Actually it was only like 35 or so, but the rain, wind, and ugliness falling from the sky made it feel worse. My cow-orkers were trying to talk me out of it, but I told them it will all be over in 17 minutes. It was, but is was a long 17 minutes. :)

On the flip side, this morning was 36f, but calm and clear [and dark] at 5:30am. Roads were pretty barren and that made for a nice commute. It is a tad spooky by the edge of the dark woods though. Something is out there [or im just freakin out over the thought of it]

hairlessbill 09-25-06 01:38 PM

Two hours (one return bathroom break, three return trips to the garage, one wheel change, one chain link removal, six stops to loosen tight link, one stop to remove too many layers) to do a six mile chain-skipping ride this morning. Mondays suck!

vrkelley 09-25-06 01:50 PM

50F Awesome ride in. A little foggy in Bellevue.

marqueemoon 09-25-06 02:19 PM

Pretty nice except the part where I got to watch some idiot on a brakeless Pista almost get rear ended. It looked like he couldn't stop in time to get behind the rider in front of him in the bike lane so instead he whipped around a car on the left side just as the light was changing. The driver almost accelerated right into him.

Yeah, but I bet he looked cool doing it.

GreenAnvil 09-25-06 03:43 PM

Monday night ride was not too memorable... terrible headwind... my panniers worked like a parachute. :( Other than this it was a comfortable 65 deg F.

rando 09-25-06 05:54 PM

great! well, a little hot coming home, but no biggie. rode over some glass before I saw it. waved to two commuters, they actually waved back. nearly got right hooked.

MSCDcommuter 09-25-06 06:38 PM

Awesome Commute

60 degrees and sunny this afternoon. Rode harder than usual and had my two best times. 35 min for the ride in and 42 for the ride back. Supposed to be sunny and cool for the rest of the week. Fall riding is awesome!

buzzman 09-25-06 07:25 PM

back to longer bike path commute today.

my chain is skipping badly all of a sudden and it even popped off the front chainring once.

I've ordered a new chain, chainring and cassette- should be here in a day or two. The only problem with putting lots of miles on the commuter is it eventually wears out.

Nice rides anyway. Made some good speed on the way home.
