Beautiful weather here lately, although in the afternoons it has been pretty warm. Yesterday I took a few pictures going to work and on the way home.

Seriously. How does it NOT occur to some lazy, jacka** driver that the crazy cyclist riding his bike in a snow storm just MIGHT be in a hell of a lot better physical shape than himself**********??

No, no karate... just good endurance and more padding (I was wearing 3 layers of clothes! I mean, c'mon, it was freakin' snowing out!)

:roflmao:

I also had better balance than him, and moved faster. He was outclassed pretty much all the way around.

Oh... and I left out the part where I threw my bike at him as he's charging me! A 42 lb tank being hurled at your face will slow anybody down a little. *smirks*

Great pix- thanks. That bike is nice. Great seatbag. Nice roads.

My ride was great on the way in today- tailwind. Actually got honked twice on the way in- kind of rare that that happens to me. Strange because I was making some good speed on a road that doesn't allow cars to go much more than 30 mph. ( I was doing 26 mph at the time). They received the major "WTF?" look from me.

o-dog 04-01-07 08:23 PM

the Friday before last I rode in the first 0.3 miles with my friend who was riding his skateboard to work. other than that it was an uneventful commute.

this past week's commutes were all good, except for Tuesday's, which wasn't. after the derailleur on the loaner MTB failed in a spectacular fashion on Monday, I took it back to the shop and they lent me their other loaner bike, a spectacularly heavy Giant city hybrid with grip shifters and a chain guard. pretty good ride and a definitely faster than the MTB... 700x40 semi-slicks vs. 26x1.95 knobbies will do that, plus the bike was actually my size and had a more aggressive geometry (not that weird handlebars-over-the-seat comfort bike geometry found on a lot of city hybrids). still noticeably harder to push along though.

this week it's been kind of transition weather... chilly in the morning and warm in the afternoon. definitely nice weather but it does mean I have to pack two sets of clothes. all commutes were fun and uneventful, although slightly slower and more laborious. most have been from my parents' house since I've been house sitting.

this past Friday I got my Coda Sport back... the new rear wheel was finally ready. it's good to be back on the Coda Sport again... even with the slightly chunkier tires it still feels like a lightning bolt out of Valhalla compared to the bikes I've been riding around the last two weeks. I actually felt motivated to get some extra miles in for the first time in a while. the weather was in the 70's in the afternoon. awesome commute back!

Wulfheir 04-02-07 06:44 AM

1-2" of really crusty snow, -17C(1F) windchill. I was riding straight into the wind.

Mr_H 04-02-07 06:45 AM

Wiiinnnndddyyyyyyy.....

Otherwise, nice :)

vtjim 04-02-07 07:15 AM

Pretty nice this morning. I was dreading it last night because it was raining, but it was mostly dry for my ride. High 30sF, with a light headwind. Mr. and Mrs. Duck were sleeping under a tree behind my office building when I arrived. Their heads were buried in the feathers on their backs. Cute.

jyossarian 04-02-07 07:21 AM

Ride in was slow and easy. Didn't feel fully awake so I took it easy. Bumped into Yoshi (from BF) as I got to work. Now I'm gonna read bmcg's encounter w/a JAM.

edit: Why's my star blue? I'm a mod now?

genel 04-02-07 07:38 AM

Springbreak's over and the traffic is back. Got cut off by a right turner, then a few miles later, a left turner turns right in front of me. First time I felt the rear tire come all the way off the pavement.

Otherwise a nice ride with a brisk tail wind.

pinkrobe 04-02-07 07:39 AM

I didn't go to work on Friday, since I was feeling pretty horrible. Unfortunately, I actually got worse over the weekend, and now I'm in full Dayquil-zombie mode. I hate being a Dayquil-zombie. :(

substructure 04-02-07 07:44 AM

The wet roads, the humid air, the wind, the frequent fog, the mud, the heat, the traffic, the dark ... makes for a great ride!! :D

My ride home should be warmer and less humid I hope.

DataJunkie 04-02-07 07:58 AM

Good commute. I've been tweaking my fit lately and after a round of crappy adjustments, the latest changes are much nicer. However, my wacky foot is bugging me. I tend to walk on the outside of my right foot and this is causing issues while pedaling clipless being that I put all the pressure on the right side of the ball of my foot. Time to check out lewedges or specialized's version.

I discovered that 40F is too warm for a jersey with a poly long john base layer and arm warmers. The arm warmers put me into overheat mode. Had to removed them.

Chuck G 04-02-07 08:12 AM

Great ride, temp in the low 60s F. Wet roads from last night's rain, I'm loving the fenders on my new bike! First commute with new [calibrated] bike computer and it says my route is 12.9 mi. On my old bike I just used the wheel circumference for 700x32 wheels from the computer manual and my commute came out to 10.9 mi. Need to check the calibration on the new computer and drive the same route one day in my car to check the distance.

Itsjustb 04-02-07 08:25 AM

Nice commute today. Same weather as Chuck G's. :) Only one honk.

relocated this weekend...

Just started my 24 mi rt commute this morning. Rode home Fri. evening, but that doesn't really count... tons of broken glass the first few miles of the ride, picked up a shard and spend ~15 minutes replacing a tube. I'm slow, I know, but I'll get faster if I can't go down to the bridge and sweep it.

I was pretty tired by the time I got to work... the commute with tire change was about an hour and 20 minutes, and the shower and change was another 15, so it's a big change from the 25-30 minutes I used to spend on the 9 mi rt commute.

The new route is almost entirely on MUP, (Mt Vernon, heading south, for those of you local) lots of people heading the other way, one or two joggers, bright sunshine and flowers, all in all a great time. I can't wait to go home!

luckysnafu 04-02-07 09:32 AM

Warm and sticky with mostly wet roads. Made good time with a light tailwind though. Gonna be very warm and the air full of pollen on the way home.

caloso 04-02-07 09:44 AM

This morning a young woman in a Ford Explorer tried to pass me on a small neighborhood street. The street was one of those narrow ones that's really about 1 1/2 lanes--just being out of the doorzone puts you in the middle of the lane. I was in the center of the lane and doing about 18 when she tried to pull around. She pulled up alongside of me when she noticed that I wasn't slowing, I wasn't ceding her the center of the lane, and that she was about to crash into a triangular curb. So she hit the brakes, I went through the intersection, and then she followed around me. As she went by, I gave her the international "WTF?" gesture but I noticed she very deliberately avoided looking at me. Nice.

HardyWeinberg 04-02-07 09:47 AM

Cold! Ice on the deck... but very nice sunny ride.

M_S 04-02-07 09:37 PM

A guy on a roadified JTS dropped me like a hot potato today. I can't help but feel self-conscious. "I just got out of track practice," I want to yell, "I'm really tired but usually I ride much faster than this! I did a century when I was 13  " Basically anything to establish my "cred" and make me not be that guy who bought the first bike he saw with drop bars and doesn't know what he's doing...

Don't blame me for being self-conscious. I'm still in high school.

scottmorrison99 04-02-07 10:52 PM

Nice ride both ways on the fixed gear. I felt fast and strong. Must be hallucinating. No problems with anyone, just in the zone today.

stockholm 04-03-07 02:07 AM

Cold, windy, and miserable.

But I'm glad I did it.

vtjim 04-03-07 06:11 AM

A little bit damp this morning, and around 40F. It was a nice ride though. I saw a pair of loons in Lake Champlain, and chased a couple of squirrels off the MUP.

My new Michelin Transworlds arrived yesterday so I mounted them last night. They went on with a minimum of fuss, but I did have to work at them a little bit with the irons. I like them. Much faster than the stock knobbies (not a surprise) and 2 or 3 MPH faster than the studded Hakkas I've been riding in the winter. Quiet, too. Good for sneaking up and buzzing pedestrians. (Kidding! :p) The reflective sidewall is a nice feature.

Unfortunately I noticed my back wheel is a bit out of true so I'll walk it over (1 block) to the LBS this morning to get straightened. I'm a bit of a clydesdale at 6'2" & 200 pounds, and riding on rough-packed ice and snow isn't exactly easy on the wheels. The front one is fine though.

knucklesandwich 04-03-07 06:43 AM

Bah! Overslept this morning and drove in. I'm a little pissed b/c I usually take Wednesdays off from biking, being a good way to take a break and break up the week, do errands, etc. Then I normally get on the treadmill and run while watching Friday Night Lights. Guess I'll just run and watch baseball tonight...

Also, today was going to be the first day I commuted on the "dinglespeed" mtn bike I built this winter, instead of my Kona Jake. Curious to see how I can handle the hills in my town gear of 42x16.

ModoVincere 04-03-07 06:47 AM

Rode the univega in this morning. The rear wheel on the Puch is hosed, and I took a look at it last night. Looks like someone tried to use a pair of pliers on the nipples at some point. My spoke wrench would not even turn half the nipples :(

Guess I'll be taking that wheel into the LBS for a new build. Well, on the bright side, I can get the hubs all cleaned up and maybe get them overhauled too.

Wulfheir 04-03-07 06:47 AM

2-3 more inches of snow. This time it was powder. Yesterday traffic was very light, I thought it was due to spring break. But today it was very heavy, considering the storm. The snow is still coming down hard.

Big Ron 04-03-07 07:03 AM

Nice ride in this AM. Lots of pollen to deal with, but temps were quite pleasant. No incidents with any knuckleheaded drivers.

pinkrobe 04-03-07 07:27 AM

Soft fluffy snow and very little traffic. I am still suffering from Dayquil-zombie syndrome. It is taking a lot of concentration to type.

Snow_canuck 04-03-07 08:07 AM

Great, except for the -14c temp with the 40 gusting to 60km/h headwind.

M_S, that may be the wisest thing I've ever heard a high-school student say (and I taught high school for 3 years).

Fast commute today. Must have been going around, as I ran into another commuter from my building and he said the same about his.
