Crazy gusting winds were the order of the day. Thankfully, it was a tailwind. I was barely sweating by the time I got to the office. The ride home will not be pleasant...

RonH 12-14-06 09:47 AM

Had to drop my wife's glasses off at her workplace so was a few minutes late.
The first thing my boss said was, "It looks like coming in at 9:00 works better for you than 8:30."
What a ****ing clock watcher. I'm salaried so who gives a ****?

Nice ride in but a crappy way to spoil a good start to the day. :crash:

DataJunkie 12-14-06 09:50 AM

The first morning of my partial trail with street replacement commute. It was wonderful. Very little traffic and I made it to where the arrogant deputy interrogated me in a very short time. You know it was going well when this thought occurs "Holy sh#@! I am here already!"
I think I may replace the rest of the platte trail with streets. I have to find 2 routes. One to Union Station for the light rail and the other to connect with my normal street route. At least things are turning out well from the crappy situation I had yesterday. I can always find a diamond in a pile of turds. :p

That and it was almost 50F this morning! Yay! :)

vtjim 12-14-06 10:26 AM

Low 40s this morning. What's up with this weather? I went bare-handed. No problems. A flock of geese flew over me.

Last night I was riding home and well ahead of me a police car rounded a bend coming toward me, lights flashing. It was twilight, so I turned on my headlight so he'd see me coming. I kinda swerved off onto the dirt shoulder as we passed, and he pulled over to give me some room as well. Guess he was looking for someone. ??

Right after that I wondered if I should have stopped and "yielded to the emergency vehicle", but the anarchist in me decided I was riding a bicycle on a bike path so I had absolute right of way over any motor vehicle. :D

Had the same thing happen to me this morning: a kid in a POS Honda Civic. And all that accomplished was him getting to sit at the light 20 seconds longer. About 3 blocks later, I caught him and passed him properly, using the entire center lane. I gave him a jaunty wave and smile as I went by. 17 year old kid in a car gets passed by a 39 year old desk jockey on a bike (and a fixed gear at that).

Anyhoo, I'd intended to take it easy on the way into work but the kid got my blood up so I was a bit warm as I reached the office. Why do they keep it so damned hot in this building?

bikedaddy 12-14-06 11:11 AM

Unusually warm for a Colorado morning in December at 50F. Nice ride in after my unexpected day of watching the kids. Can't wait to see what interesting virus my son brings home from preschool today!

DataJunkie 12-14-06 11:19 AM

My three year old brought home the stomach flu from preschool Tuesday. Wednesday was horrible and then he threw up and was just fine. Children's immune systems are something else.
Apparently the stomach flu is going around. Watch out! :p

HardyWeinberg 12-14-06 11:56 AM

Heavy mist. Not heavy enough to soak through my goretex gloves (like Monday and Wednesday), but my shirt was very very wet. Now it's raining. It's finally backed off enough that I'm heading across the lot for coffee.

I wish I could catch the folks who do that! Unfortunately in this part of Arizona, they're long gone - not enough traffic on the roads I frequent (at least at the times I'm on them.)

LOL! Same here. After the first person yelled at me, I resolved to use the lanes for everything this morning (I've been known to "go pedestrian" on the nastier intersections since I'm such a bike newb) and I didn't pootle along like I had planned. *Grrrrr...*

DataJunkie 12-14-06 03:20 PM

The sheriff deputy that stopped me yesterday also got my blood boiling. Many of my fastest rides are following an altercation of one sort or the other.

vtjim 12-14-06 06:12 PM

Nice ride home. Tailwind. Caught the end of a sunset behind the Adirondacks. :)

tomg 12-14-06 08:41 PM

finished week off, team building event in philly scheduled tomorrow, 4/5 commute days this week...
getting "easier", feeling stronger! next week, 5/5?
seems like people in cages are increasingly aware of solo commute (seeds being planted).
happy pre-weekend!

buzzman 12-14-06 10:20 PM

it was a gorgeous spring day today... oops, it's December!? great ride in. the ride home was nice but my wife and I met up on the bike path and we were both wiped from long days and toodled home real slow stopping at a pub for dinner.

scottmorrison99 12-14-06 11:05 PM

I am so envious. I can't ride until tomorrow, Doctor's orders. Concussion from mountain bike crash yesterday. Broke my helmet on a rock after losing traction on clay and falling on the back of my helmet. I had my wife take me to the LBS to get a new helmet today. It matches my club's kit.:D

lds700 12-15-06 12:40 AM

3rd day of 4 this week, 40 degrees, light rain on return ride. Today was not eventful however Friday night rides tend to be the most stressful, forecast is for snow tommorow so I hope the week ends on a happy note. I was told by a customer that I needed my head examined for riding in December but they just have
not seen the light!

"I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw" - hamlet.

"rode madly off in all directions" - stephen leacock.

wind all over the place today, from all directions and at all speeds. my infallible rainmaking ploy of stopping at the grocery store worked yet again. almost ready to start thinking i'm magic.

last sunday i bought another mars taillight and brought it home with packaging to install. tossed the packaging part into a big stockpot that was sitting around on the stove in my dedication to the cause of Brighter Taillights Now, and forgot to dispose of it properly afterwards. yesterday my kid decided to make himself some popcorn while i was at work and i happened to call him to say hi. . . i was baffled about what he meant by 'the plastic thing' until he read out the still-legible word MARS from the charred clump. he bears me and my bike no grudge.

superslomo 12-15-06 07:42 AM

Came in on two wheels to work for the first time today!

I'd been planning and assembling for a while, and finally took the plunge. Took me substantially longer than I had expected (12 miles took over an hour??) but was really satisfying. I can't remember when I last felt this awake at work. It was very strange changing in the restroom here at the office, but in time I guess you get used to it.

It's Brooklyn to Midtown Manhattan... I took the west side today, but I think I'm going to try 1st Avenue on Monday.

pinkrobe 12-15-06 08:16 AM

Bleagh. I'm so happy it's Friday - I won't have to get up at 6:00 to go anywhere. Oh wait - I'm going snowboarding tomorrow. Bah, I'm sleeping in until 6:45...

jyossarian 12-15-06 08:28 AM

Beautiful commute!
From my bed to my computer
where work awaits me.

idcruiserman 12-15-06 08:41 AM

Sweet ride in this morning. Predicted winds of 25MPH turned out to be a tailwind until I got near work. So warm, 45F. Just wish my son had decided to go to sleep earlier than midnight.

rule 12-15-06 08:48 AM

Foggiest ride that I have made in years.

Glad that I rode though. I passed another cyclist who was standing in the middle of the road searching for something with his bike light. Turns out he was looking for a lense from his eye glasses. He had a really crappy light and probably never would have found it. I helped him out and it took about 15 minutes but we finally found it. Was thankful again for riding with great lights. So was he.

Relaxer 12-15-06 09:00 AM

Going to be a beautiful day in our nation's capital today. Ride in was no big whoop. The telephone temperature guy said it was 42 when I left, but I was sweating in my normal 40s wear. Everyone in my office is planning on leaving early today. I think I will too -- and not tell the wife -- so as to catch an unexpected bonus ride.

ragboy 12-15-06 09:07 AM

30 degrees and no wind this morning -- just about right. On my way home in the dark last night I about hit a skateboarder head-on on the MUP. He was on the wrong side of the MUP -- dark clothing, looking down at his board trying to do some new trick. I was cruising pretty good when my light caught him. I slammed on the brakes, and "educated" him on trail rules. He was embarrassed. He could've been drilled real easy. It was in the high 50s going home last night. The warmer it gets the more idiots are on the MUP

Everyone have a safe weekend!

Welcome to the brotherhood, superslomo! You're routine will get smoother after awhile after you see what works and what doesn't.

Nice ride for me this morning. I was pushing along well through a light headwind. Temps in the low 40s. Feels like springtime. Very, very strange.

Just got back from a physical exam. HHCMF! :D "Normal weight", elevated BP (white coat hypertension). She told me to eat more vegetables. :o

superslomo 12-15-06 09:27 AM

Part of the adjustment for me is that my regular ride is a triple, and I am a massive weakling :)

The commuter is my old steel Schwinn which has a regular road double. The big cog on the back is (I think) a 25 or 28, where the road/touring bike has a 34. If nothing else I'm definitely going to get a bit stronger over the commute, which should show some dividends on the road bike... hopefully.

It was a really good feeling, but I'm a bit sore at the moment.

gizem310 12-15-06 10:59 AM

The first fog I've seen in quite a while here in SoCal - and I enjoyed every minute of it. Stopped by the farmer's market to load up on the weekend's veggies, put them in my backpack and came to work. Already looking forward to my commute back home!
Awesome!

caloso 12-15-06 11:29 AM

I was running a little late this morning. I had to swap pedals from my roadie to the commutie. The super-bargain Ritchey mtb pedals I've been using have finally given out. I think I got them for less than $25 on a Nashbar closeout and they've survived several rainy winters. I knew that they were giving out and I've got an order for Shimano 520 pedals coming from probikekit.com but I thought they'd survive the week. Then last night the left one made a really scary crunchy/squeaky noise every turn. I rode home gingerly but didn't get a chance to swap them out until this morning.

Still, I rode in very mellowly today. It's my last commute of the year.

A happy Chanukkah, merry Christmas, a kwazy Kwaanza, a super Solstice, and a prosperous and safe New Year to you all!
