Rode home on the eighteen speed Klein last night since riding fixed has my legs feeling a bit blown. The weather was nasty this morning so took the fixed gear out and rode a more relaxed ride. It took a little bit longer but I feel better. Seeing many more folks out on MTBs with knobbed tires, especially between Cary and NCSU.

I saw one guy outside a house standing next to a bicycle and throwing a backpack over his shoulders. Yet another commuter, I'd guess. I also came up behind a guy on an old road bike like mine. He must not have known I was back there when he let out a huge burp. :D Temps in the low 60s. Pretty humid. Headwind. Not too bad though. Oh! Excitement! There's a big bank building next door and there are cops all over, hiding behind bushes and walls, and a news crew. I wonder what's going on. |
Great ride.
Played cat and mouse with two other commuters. One on a recumbent (lives a few blocks from me but usually leaves 30-40 minutes before me) and one (wearing slacks and white shirt  ) on a road bike with a small trunk bag. Our destinations were in the same part of town but each of us took different streets at different intersections. We'd split up only to meet again a few blocks down the road. We rode through some road construction (only one lane of travel) and our 3 bikes looked kinda cool in the line of other vehicles waiting for the flagman to wave us on. |
it was supposed to rain, but it didn't. it was bee-yootiful. I get to work @ 6:50 and I can even put on my sunglasses on the way in! I saw a few other cyclists... I almost got caught in an Arcata traffic jam... 200 head of cattle in the road! Somehow they all knew what lane they were supposed to be in! Very bizarre!

Nice ride home yesterday, met a couple of commuters from Albuquerque for what I'm dubbing as the "Inaugural Albuquerque Hardcore Commuters Meet" We met at UNM at the Yale entrance, hung out for a bit waiting for some others to show up, and then pedaled up to Kelly's we lost one guy on the way, he turned off to do something...but me, Reza, and Eaglevii (sorry, forgot your real name) stayed, had some drinks, ate, and talked a bunch about bikes. Good time. We're already planning a semi-regular meet perhaps once a month or so, maybe we'll have a better turn out next time, I may try to bring a few people from work that commute...
Ride home after that was a little sluggish :-) Ride in this morning was short but good. Nice weather, no jacket, and just shorts. Doing the short route home today too, got bowling tonight. Did 527 miles for the month of May, up 60 miles from April. |
First day of winter down here in Australia. Pretty cool this morning but no rain until later today. I was very happy to be riding in today as there was a major truck crash on a bridge I cross. Traffic was diverted and it was bedlam on the roads. I was able to ride over the bridge on the footpath and continue on as normal.

I'm on vacation and I miss commuting. I don't miss working, just the ride. I have my bicycle w/ me and I've been riding a lot, but something's different. The commute has lots of traffic, suicidal peds and crazy drivers. The vacation riding has less traffic, peds that don't jaywalk and less crazy drivers. I think I miss the adrenaline rush of traffic dodging. There must be something wrong w/ me.

16.7 mile extended commute helped complete monthly biking at 507.2 miles (not all commuted, 1502.2 miles, ytd). my "BMI" (body mass index) has gone from +/- 29.0 ("obese") to 26.1 ("over weight") since i started w/ bf 2006! my goal is less than 25.0 bmi, would like to do another doudle century as 1993 (200.0 miles, 15.5 hours, 6/18/06). right now, bmi 25.0 is goal!
another good day! |
Back from vacation and rode with fresh legs. I was avging 134mi/week. With the bike commute competition being extended, the break was very nice.

Hot then rain !!
|
morning: Niiiiice. afternon: Hot. jumped in the pool afterwards. :)

well, i drove today as planned, thanks to the aforementioned baseball game. but i just had to say this:
we came home in the dark and the rain, and i counted at least three people on bikes with nothing but the reflective strips on the backs of their tights to say they were there. believe me. if you don't have blinkies and scotchlite on you - you need to get them. |
Besides the Jerky in the box truck who buzzed me crossing Mass.Ave, the commute was uneventful...just the way I like it.

another good day! Had a nice ride in this morning. Wasn't planning on riding but my gf said she would take me to work tomorrow since I am flying out of town instead of me driving in and leaving my bags at work today. Saw another cyclist out who said good morning to me after we climbed a hill. Another warm and sticky day here so it will be a hot ride home. My last commute for over a week today though :( since I will be at a conference all next week up in New England |
The ride home yesterday was at a bit of a rushed pace; I was being chased down by giant black thunderclouds. The rain only just caught me as I was riding up my street, so I didn't get soaked. I spent the next half hour watching the torrential rain, watching for lightning, and wondering how I would cook dinner with the power out. ;)
This morning was nice. The rain had washed all the tree pollen away, and the air was fresh. It would have been nice to ride a bit longer... |
Couldn't post yesterday because of website problems, but to summarize:
- fast - passed everybody - filtered on the way home to great effect Today, cranked it in pretty fast, didn't get stuck anywhere for very long. |

As I left yesterday the bike rack was nearly full. ALL of our commuters rode in! Way to go guys! And this morning, the new bike I saw on the rack during BTWW was back, so we may have added another person to our ranks. :D |
A little light rain this morning. Nothing soaking or anything like that. Lots of runners out, but no cyclists.
I missed a big bad thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. |
Went to work early today so traffic was light, and car fumes were minimal. I took my time and had a leasurly pace the whole way.
This is only day two for biking to work hopefully I can keep it up all summer. I need to find a way to bring coffee with me. |
Something deeply satisfying about seen a patrol car with a bike rack and no bike. Even better when I switched lanes and passed him. Who said the morning commute had to be dull?

Rode 340 'car avoidance' bike commuter miles for the month of May. Travel, graduations took away from the max potential of 440 but I am very happy with my May bike commute record. Only whimmped out one day and drove. And it was all done on an old old 820 Trek MTB with MTB tires!
Today, the first day of June, I found myself getting a bit bored of the ride after the first 20 minutes. I guess that is the nature of the commute regardless of mode. Now that the kids are out of school the wife rode yesterday with me. 17.3 average in Memphis on a mtb was not too bad I thought. Only two lights slowed us down :) 100% in June MTD :D |
Well, yesterday was great - light traffic (got out of work early), and I beat the rain home by about an hour. Today, however, was another story. Not one, but two flats! I had to walk the last couple of miles home, because I didn't have spare tubes with me. Quick trip to the LBS fixed that, and now I know exactly how to change a tube. Can't wait to get back on the road again tomorrow - the weather is getting better by the day.

no ride today :-( had to run some errands at lunch that are a little far for doing on the bike :-) I've been draggin a bit all day...nothing wakes me up like a ride anymore...not even coffee! Got new goodies in the mail yesterday and today (one of the errands was run by the PO and pick up a performance package) got new arm and leg warmers, a new blinky, new socks, AND a nice nashbar underseat pack/rack. it's like a knock off moots tailgator. Mounted up pretty nice and will work great for my tour in Colorado at the end of the month. Not really big enough to put clothes in for a commute though...

Saw two other commuters this morning. Nice ride today but my butt has been dragging all week. My m-in-law fell on Monday so my wife and I have had to spend WAY TOO MUCH time with her after work.
My eating has been off too. Either eating too much, too little, the wrong things, or eating at the wrong time. Because of you know who we FINALLY got to eat at 8:15 last night (we usually eat around 6:00) and once again I just gulped down whatever was in the fridge. :crash: Gotta get her straightened out so our lives can get back to normal -- whatever that is. |
